I have to disagree in part with the comments in this thread saying fanservice is always good. Listening to feedback asking Bioware to not reuse the same exact assets as much as they did in DA 2 is an easy fix. Just don't have quest in the same few areas only or just don't reuse the same exact cave for numerous quests.

Giving us a particular class again is also fairly easy to do. But I believe doing a particular character justice to the many fans of that character is much harder because of the expectations of so many. Cullen has been put on a pedestal by many, even being named by some as the best fleshed out character of any Bioware game, and I believe that Bioware set themselves up for another angry backlash if Cullen is not exactly as what some hope he will be like. I can already see that Cullen has to be player sexual or bisexual just so there is no backlash by some. I am of the believe this kind of fanservice limits Bioware in writing the stories they may want to write because they are forced to give into the demand or face the consequences.

Arguably everything they have done from wide open environments to the return of the overhead camera is "fanserivce", as they were all complaints fans had about Dragon Age 2 and things we requested.

Yep.

Changes people wanted are "listening to the fans", everything else is fanservice?

Yeah, I've seen numerous people who think like this:

"They made a change I wanted" = "Bioware listens to their fans!"

"They made a change that I didn't want" = "Bioware panders to people with fanservice!"

Or if the story goes in such a fashion or Cullen reacts in a way fans don't expect, they'll be a lot of backlash as well.

You're right. Cullen has been placed on a high pedestal by so many fans, it'll be impossible for Bioware to have Cullen be everything for every fan who likes him.

I don't think you know what fanservice means. Fan service content is gratuitous. Improving game mechanic is not gratuitous, they do it because they want to make a better game.

You guys saying isometric view etc are being facetious.  Fan service is something that won't improve the game as a game or a narrative, but instead exists to please a group of dedicated fans, with no benefit to the game.  In Cullen's case, a vocal section of dedicated fans.  Oghren's return in DAA was fanservice since he had no particular reason to be a companion over any other 2h warrior.  Instead, he was there to please fans of Origins who liked him.

I'm not saying Cullen's return is fanservice, by the way.  I think that he shouldn't be a major character personally, since he has little to add, but I trust the writers see something in him and will do an excellent job.  I think Cullen's romance is fan service, though I hope to be proven wrong...

I am honestly hoping that we meet the real Bianca and we help Varric get back with her.

OOOOOOOR. He gets with Cassandra. Because I am a giant neeeerd and I ship it like FedEx with delivery confirmatiiiion.

((don't mind me, I am a little drunk))

That had me rolling laughing!!! I've always shipped Varric with Isabela. They could get into SO much trouble together, it would be glorious.

I'm glad that Frostbite will enable high-definition cheese. Multiple varieties, no less!

In Mark of the Assassin you could sometimes find skeletons crushed under gigantic cheese wheels. I wonder if the Fade tears will result in demon-possessed, malevolent cheese?!

Discovery will be a part of the game. Caves/dungeons that you can simply stumble upon, w/ no quest sending you there. #dai #PAXEast2014

Ness @paperbytheton

Discovery, variety and purpose are the core goals of Inquisition. #DAI #PAXEast2014

Ashe | Ladyinsanity @ladyinsanity

Goal 1: Area variety.

Goal 2: "Why is the Inquisitor here?" Make the places significant

Goal 3: Rediscover...discovery #BiowareBase

Ness @paperbytheton

THEDAR! It's a thing. #DAI

Kelly @cateia97

THEDAR. #dai #PAXEast2014

Ashe | Ladyinsanity @ladyinsanity

Highlands, a snowy area where something's going wrong and the player will end up facing the Red Templars. Think big war camps #BiowareBase

Ness @paperbytheton

That is a very cool thing. One of the things I like about Diablo III is that there are a lot of places you don't have to visit, but can visit (caves/dungeons/cellars/etc.) ... with no quests associated with them. They're just there to explore. And you can find all kinds of interesting things, occasionally ... besides, of course, the 80000th khazra to kill or the 50000th treasure chest ... other interesting things, occasionally, to see and run into. Unusual merchants, snippets of lore.

Serendipitous exploration definitely adds to game's interest, and replayability. If you're not the majority of people who don't finish a play through let alone do a 2nd one, of course. "Hmmm, I didn't notice that the first time around, let me go take a look."

Character from the Masked Empire will be in the Highlands area. Apparently, it makes sense that they're there. #BiowareBase

Ness @paperbytheton

Possible to get through #DAI without hitting all the areas.

Kelly @cateia97

It's possible for you to have a completely different playthrough every time you play, bc of all the discoverable areas. #dai #PAXEast2014

Ness @paperbytheton

Those who have read the books and comics and seen the movie will get a deeper experience in #DAI

You can grind Final Fantasy-style in #DAI

Kelly @cateia97

You can easily deplete your resources, making for a more realistic economy. #dai #PAXEast2014

You can depopulate an area of animals. If you're hunting wolves for a certain no. of pelts, you'll have to wait for them to come back. #DAI

Andrew Farrell: Spiders are in the caves. If you don't like big ass creepy spiders, maybe don't go there. #DAI

OK. So that answers a long-standing question (about day/night cycle). I wasn't terribly invested in whichever way they were going to do it, but I did want to sort of know how they were going to.

And so the weather will be both dynamic and occasionally plot-driven, so like when you visit a place, "it's always a dark and stormy night".
