Choose whatever you feel, not for combat needs. You will be more than okay in the sequels with your squad options and your ability to change classes. Pick the story you want most.
EDIT: I see you chose Kaiden. Enjoy the story and best of luck!

not true. As long as you sabotage the Geth communications and flyers on your way to the base, Kirrahe lives regardless of who sets the bomb and who you save.Whatever you do! Send the one you want to die to handle the bomb, or else you won't save Captain Kirrahe, which is just the most badass Salarian ever.

In my playthroughs, Kirrahe has only made it back when I went to help him in the battle. I must have missed something all these years because I thought I got their communications and the alarm and all that jazz.
Alright. So I'm almost done with my Mass Effect trilogy journey. As a first time player, I was really absorbed. And may I just say, Kaidan kills me in ME3. He's so sweet and cute and all those "Get better. That's an order." and "Are you flirting with me?" and "We need you. I need you." and all the kissing in Citadel. OMG. I could just die. He is so sweet. I've never romanced anyone in the series (as I was building up to Kaidan as a maleShep) and it waaas sooooo worth it. Even Zevran and my mage warden did not make me squeal as much as Shep and daddy Alenko.
Now I don't really care that Ashley died anymore.
(Currently at the end of Citadel right before the party.)
Ashley is just annoying in the next games, plus I'm pretty sure she's racist.

Kaidan has more tech skill, send him with the bomb. When it's time to choose, go back and save Kaidan, since the nuke is kind of important. Makes more sense to me that way.
This is my first trilogy run with Ashley instead of Kaidan, but I haven't noticed any big differences so far.
Just finished my trilogy run with Kaidan with male paragon Shep romancing him. That was quite a ride! Now I'm beginning a new run (yup, literally after beating the game, I loaded up ME1 again), going with a renegade femShep romancing Dr. T'Soni. I wanted to try to save Ashley again...however, it seems that renegade femShep hates Ashley. You can be really mean to her, and it seems the friendship that I felt playing as maleShep got replaced by a certain competitiveness when playing as a female character. Interesting. As such I'm saving Kaidan again.
Also, I feel sad playing renegade. It's just so...evil. Like I didn't want to kill the rachni queen. :'(
And not putting him in any mission because he's afraid Kaidan might die.
He's a Marine, he'll fight, suffer, and die to win the battle; treating him as a porcelain figure is disrespectful to his honor IMO.

It's not evil, it's ruthless.

A motiveless renegade playthrough would be kinda sick. I have been watching a "renegade" playthrough on youtube and it is both frustrating and a tad bit boring. A computer could do this: just always pick the lower right option without ever thinking about it. I find it much easier to play renegon if I have come up with a background for Shepard that explains why she does what she does.
Colonist/Ruthless, for instance. She will do what it takes to get the mission done, no matter the cost. She doesn't like Slavers or Batarians. But she is solicitous of colonists. She sides with Cerberus in ME2 because of her colonist background and her willingness to do what it takes. She saves the colony on Feros, but kills Wrex and the Queen in ME1 because they are posing a threat to the mission and/or galactic safety.
The key to "role playing" to play out a role, not just be a substitute for an automated program where all your choices have already been made for you. Play the game, don't let the game play you.
