One thing that annoyed me the most in both DA's was the fact that if I played a Mage or a Fighter I didn't have a Rogue in the party who could unlock those chests for the loot and XP.

Daveth was a Rogue Warden Initiate in the first Dragon Age and was unable to unlock any chests.

Hawkes party consisted of fighters and a mage unless you selected mage then it was 2 mages no rogues in the party to unlock the chests.

So I usually find myself playing a Rogue to unlock this stuff, What I would like is a rogue Companion at the beginning of DA:I who can unlock chests and disable traps in the start of the game even if said companion doesn't stay with the PC or at least till we reach our goal and are able to recruit Varric into the party, though to me that would limit my grouping.

I like Varric but I liked Isabella more for duel wielding 2 daggers can jump into stealth and pop up behind and crit an opponent, So who ever we end up with Rogue like ability's be nice to have a starting Rogue in group with lock picking and trap disabling ability's.

Not trying to be petty or anything just a minor annoyance at least for me seeing these chests I can't unlock all over the place unless I play a Rogue myself.

Thanks Bioware keep up the Incredible work!

I was kind of hoping that demi-god rouges wouldn't be a thing anymore, tbf.

As to the topic, I've done the same, and most of the stuff in those chests aren't worth the time, unless you actually want to play rogue.

Ha.  This is definitely a frustrating thing since I tend to be a "completist" and like to open every single chest.  I almost never play as a rogue because it's just my least favorite class, so I always have to feel that pang of momentary frustration as I get to a locked chest and realize that I have, literally, no way to get into it (even though I know deep down that there's nothing really great in there.....).  Glad to see that I'm not the only one.

DA2 was better about this than DAO, as there was only one chest denied to non-rogues. Still, I get the gripe, as I love the shinies and hate being denied them.

I hope they don't do that this time

But it's a good thing that those chests were mostly pointless :P

Lock bash!! That's all I need. I don't care if the items have the potential to get damaged. :P

Yes I agree with you OP, it's quite annoying, particularly at the very beginning before you can even get any rogues in the party.

This was always a feature I actually liked.  It adds to the list of consequences you have to take into consideration when you decide what sort of character you want to play.  Starting as a warrior is probably the easiest, but doing so means having all those locked chests sitting around, mocking you.

I swear, the first time I played rogue in Origins, I triumphantly danced my way to each chest.  It made that playthrough so much more satisfying.

I have the most adorable picture in my head right now, of a nug getting down with her bad self and frolicking among the chests and boxes.

Dear GOD yes.  I like rogues and often play them for my first playthrough, but it messes with my OCD so badly when I can't open them as a mage.  I don't like the lock bash mod myself--I think rogues should still have a niche--but for all that is precious keep them away from the starting zones.

Agreed. It's so annoying not being able to do something about those closed chests, because you did'nt choose the right class and there's no one else at start, that could take over and do it for you.

So no closed boxes at starting levels or give other classes also some kind of ability, to open it. Like rogue:lockpick, warrior: smash open, mage: desintergrate lock.

Would fix the whole thing from the start.

I never really cared. If you don't play as a rogue, at most you will miss out from the few chests in the starting area will be a few pairs of dirty pantaloons and a meager 14 exp.

But it's a Schrodinger's Box.  It might have a cat in it, and we won't know until we open it.

And we have to know, because Reasons.  Not knowing is the worst.

And lock-bash might result in a dead cat, but then, it could have been dead all along, but WE"LL NEVER KNOW.

Yes please, it is so annoying. Sure I got past the problem with mods but I shouldn't have to. I wooden box should not be tough enough to withstand a greatsword of explosion.

I'm a completionist and passing up those locked chests kind of irritated me and I needed to unlock them not so much for the items but for the fact I didn't leave anything behind.

I mean in DA:O we had Daveth who was a rogue but no lockpicking an oversight maybe, I didn't like using mods as it detracts from my experience of the game. (IMO)

DA:2 party was all warriors and mage's only rogue was if the PC chose Rogue granted only 1 locked chest but still it was a Locked chest I couldn't open "AAAAGH!!"

Ok I'm better now.

I would actually just like if every class could disable traps or unlock chest to make the game "fair" I guess. There are no other class specific obstacles, why must chest and traps be class specific. Why not tie the ability to unlock chest or disarm traps to the player's cunning skill in general for all classes. I mean cunning is basically a character's intelligence perse, so why must only a rogue be able to unlock chest?

You could have locked chests in the starting area, but allow the player to go back to that area later?  So the rogue gets to get the stuff earlier, but everyone can get it eventually?

I'd settle for not having to manually switch to my rogue to open chests. Mass Effect 1 did it where your paty had a collective "open junk up" stat that was based on everyone together and would let you open up locked containers without having to switch to garrus or tali. If isabela says "i could do that for you" then why not just have her do it?

I think this would just be fixed with an ingame "lock bash" option. I don't play non-mages. It's frustrating when a chest wont open even under my withering glare.

But when I do actually get it open, there's nothing in it anyway so...not sure what i'm complaining about right now.

Ooh the memories. When I encountered doors and chests screaming "roll rogue!" on my human noble warrior, I rerolled mage and used the console to become a mage/rogue. Have played DAO and DA2 that way exclusively now.

That's certainly a good point.

I enjoy playing rogues so I don't miss out often, but I can understand the problem. There ought to be, as has been mentioned dozens of times, a "bash" option with locked chests.

The main lure of the rouge for me is unlocking chests and dual wielding blades. Nothing is more annoying than not being able to unlock something. Every time I wasn't a rouge the starting chests always taunted me. This also happened in awakening...lots of locked chests and no rouge.

Yep it definitely felt like they were taunting me too. If you're not a rogue it's not until Lothering you get Leliana who can actually open locked chests and boxes for you so you not only miss however many there are in your personal origin story you have to bypass all the ones in Ostegar and the wilds too... so many boxes and chests taunting me  :(

Damn completionist/OCD streak!
