It's closer, but elves have it worst than mages.

Mages at least have ultimate control over the elements and the awesome might of magic.

Grey Wardens have crappy lives, but at least thats part of the sacrifice that they take to defend the world. Plus, it's heavily implied that most wardens die before they even make it to their Joining. Not great, but there's room to cope.

City Elves...they are structurally powerless and culturally trapped between an anvil and a hammer. Even electing the City Elf Warden as a bann and reforming the Denerim Alienage only creates more resistance from local humans and only spotlights the situation.

So...yeah...

You mean they die before the calling? I'm not sure that's a good thing. Means young death. Probably against the darkspawn somewhere... kind of like the thing alistair says he doesn't want in the fade.

Oh it's all so bleak

It seems to me like "active"/attack based Templar abilities take lyrium. Those powers are actual magic, whether they call it that or not. Perhaps the magic resistance doesn't need this. That could be based in rigorous training, having a disciplined or strong psychological foundation, eventually creating mental resistance.

Constantly fighting monsters and eventually becoming one yourself, without the chance of a family or much of a life beside that sounds like the worst fate to me, so I say Wardens.

Choosing between mages and city elves is tough. I think overall life at the Circle should be okay (unless you live in Kirkwall...) but being dragged away from your parents at a young age and Wynne's story about her baby being taken away are really terrible, so it's based on that I'm going with mages. Overall circumstances may be poor for city elves, but at least they still have the comfort of a supportive community and loved ones nearby.

City elves, they use to own the large parts of the forest, now humans build buildings on it and they become slaves, they even forgot about their ancient magic and culture.

The city elves, they basically live in a ghetto (the 1940's WWII Europe kind, not the modern-day urban housing project kind) and they have no real rights (and any rights they do have are ignored if it's convenient for the humans). The mages may live a caged existence, but it's a gilded cage and life really isn't to bad, and while the Wardens do have a shortened life, except during times of a blight there is no conscription and they are very well respected.

Yeah...no offense, but I really don't think Wardens have that short of a stick...yeah they have to fight darkspawn and die young and even if they don't they only have 20 years, but c'mon this is a medieval setting here...most Grey Wardens prolly don't even HAVE 20 natural years left if the average age of a Grey Warden is ~30 years old when they join...hell, even David Gaider admitted that he made the Grey Warden time-limit waaaaay too long (I forget where I read that, but if you don't believe me, just google it). :P

But yeah, I would definitely have to say City Elves have it the worst.  Casteless dwarves can join the Legion of the Dead or go to the surface for a better lot in life.  If Circle Mages REALLY hated the Chantry and the Circle, they could always try fleeing to Tevinter...seems like life is pretty rosy for mages there...City Elves...I was always under the impression that the Dalish looked down on them, but the more I play and read...it seems like the Dalish just treat CE with varying degrees of disgust and distrust - probably for abandoning their ways and living with humans.  -shrugs-  Poor elves...

I'm thinking of the scene where she protests to Vaughn, "My lord, this is a wedding!" and he sneers back that she can play dress-up tea party with her pets if she wants to, but elves are just animals and can't *really* marry. I take it she has other dialogue after the abduction?

I'm almost 100% sure Mother Boann is gone after the abduction. One of the NPCs mentions her absence being due to a lot of angry elves being around right now...

How is joining the Legion of the Dead a way to improve your life? You are literally being declared dead by everybody else, they give you a "funeral", and then you get to fight darkspawn in the Deep Roads every day until you die. How is that in any way an improvement compared to living as a casteless criminal?

The reason why the Wardens are worse is because you can't fight back. As Jory says, I've never faced an enemy that I couldn't use my sword on. Its like having a disease. You can't do anything except find some inner peace and embrace the B.S. But that's easier said than done. Not everyone is a Buddha. Or Wynne.. who seems to think accepting hardships is a good thing.

City Elves and Mages can fight or flee. And in one case, I finally agree with Morrigan. Those mages have themselves to blame. While some seem to like suffering under the Chantry anyways, like Keili or whatever her name is. Well.. they used to have themselves to blame. Looks like they're raising hell now. We'll see how that pans out, I guess.

And City Elves can get the hell out of Dodge. The Dalish would welcome them. If they explored, and weren't so fearful about dumb rumors that the Dalish are bandits, then they'd be fine. It's not like they'd all have to hunt. They can sew, craft things, or help Halla or teach their own skills.. they'd be appreciated and not treated like pieces of crap, unlike they would be with humans.

Basically, God or Gods help those who help themselves. But nobody can help a Warden. Their only God is the rotten taint of an Archdemon's blood in their veins.

I agree that the Wardens have it the worst. Your life is basically doomed to darkspawn. Hell I'd rather have a suicide pact and die in a house on a farm than end it all fighting monsters in the dark. What a sh*tty existence that would be.

True...I guess I just have seen the Legion and the Wardens as one and the same...when you join either of them, your life is pretty much screwed over and doomed anyways so the way I see it is that I might as well go down kicking and screaming and taking as many bleeping bleepers with me as I can.
