Made a rogue (and dont worry I dont need help speccing, ive read most threads on the subject), slapped the difficulty on hard and have made it to Lothering.

So now I have Me, Morgan, Dog and Allistair on my team with Leila on stanby.

I am getting crushed in Lothering. I have played the game on normal as a mage, and its usually not too bad. The most challenging part of the game (for me) is the beginning, by mid to end game I have refined my team and their spells/talents and have enough gear to sleep through normal, which is why I put it on hard.

Take the bandit fights as an example. The enemy has 2 dogs, 3 archers and 2 mele (I think, this is all off memory). CC/Controll I have available is Dreadhowl, Mind Blast, Dirty Fighting and Shield bash.

I run in with every one, with tank at head. Once I am close enough with Dog, I use Dreadhowl and start to try and focus 1 of the archers (ive also tried one of the dogs). Once that wears off I use Mind Blast, and usually one of the archers gets away and I use horror on him, then use shield bash and Dirty Fighting as necessary. Usually by then one archer is dead  and another is on his way but thats about it. Then I had to chug maybe 3-4 pots on Allistair to survive. The dogs overwhelming Allistair and the archers randomly stunning people also really hurts.

I have specced into momentum on the my rogue, but the damage is still too small to kill stuff fast enough before I am thoughroughly crushed. And yes I am positioning myself behind them for backstabbing goodness.

If I respecced Morgan into more usefull spells I could do these fights pretty easily most likely, as her default spells are a hodge podge of crap, but I would rather not "cheat". I also dont like chugging pots on these random fights, but I am not sure what else I could be doing here, and would appreciate some ideas (besides lowering the difficulty to get past it :D). I really find it hard to believe people have soloed this stuff on nightmare when I can barely do it in a group.

I think your problem may be from running in with everyone. At Lothering your party is not yet strong and well equipped enough to succeed at that. Try giving everyone bows and starting the fight at a distance, you should be able to reduce their strength a bit before they close on you. And once the Mabari have closed on you, try killing them fast and ignoring the archers. Since they will be attacking from a distance their damage will be less. And the Mabari's overwhelm is a bigger threat to your lower level characters. If your rogue has any trap skills, it wouldn't hurt to stick a few in front of your party.

First of all, it's Morrigan, not "Morgan" ...And "Leila?" It's Leliana! :P
Jokes apart, using pots during fights is required at higher difficulty levels (at least until you get Wynne to heal your party), because not only enemies hit harder, but also crowd control spells and abilities last less than in Normal or Easy: a stun or a fear won't stop your enemies for long.

However, to increase your damage output dramatically, you could teach to all your characters Poison-Making at level 1, so that all melee can use poisons and, above all, BOMBS.. imagine 4 bombs thrown on your enemies at the same time....

@ Lost Scout: The reason I was doing that was so I could use Dreadhowl and Mind Blast more effectively, but what you said makes sense, I will try that.

And yes I am terrible with names :D (the Leila was because I was too lazy to type out Leliana or whatever).

I though of the poisons as well, but that would require a respec :(

Find the Landmark Tree and have Dog pee on it for Mabari Dominance. Don't run up to them, let them come to you. Put the party on hold by the tree and use one ranged character to hit a bandit at extreme range. Sound the Monty Python retreat " Run Away, Run away!" A few bandits will chase and when they get close, release hold and deal with them, then hold again. You should be able to reduce the numbers to a manageable size for a win. If only Morrigan had Arcane Bolt it would be a much easier strategy. Frontal assaults and running straight in is a a spectacular sight and leads to a spectacular fail. Usually for a frontal assault the absolute minimum ratio is 3 to 1. Some theorists like 5 to one. The odds are against you.

What LostScout said.  Make them come to you, and the Mabari definitely should die first.  They are your greatest threat.  Morrigan's basic spells really aren't bad at all.  She's only a couple spells away from Cone of Cold and Sleep, which are both amazing.

Pick up Sten and swap out Dog. Arm up with bows. Combine all 4 characters into single party movement. Edge up to any group you intend to attack and target the one enemy that is closest to you. Engage at extreme range. _Most_ of the time, that ONE enemy will come charging for you; _maybe_ also the next enemy standing closest to him. Nine times out of ten, the target is dead before he reaches your party.

The only remaining fight that may give you difficulty is the one with the peasant bounty hunters. That one starts at hand-to-hand range. (But then, it's only peasants.)

:o Wow! That worked extraordinarily well.

I was surprised at how piece-meal (sp?) the badiies came in. Never bothered to even try that strat out in the open because I always figured I would have one large group of mobs running at me and I would face the same thing in a different area.

Thank you again,
Sam
