Lets turn this around: can people think of what benefits would come by not sharing this information yet?  (Disclaimer: I don't know why the information wasn't shared.  All I know is that it wasn't)

I think the major thing is that it's unnecessary. The premise of this thread is more or less that straight people (or people that intend to play a straight character) know about one romance option while us gays (or those of us who choose to play a queer character) don't. I think the premise is a bit flawed and is largely based in the (unfortunately mostly correct) assumption of heteronormativity.

If I weren't a member of these boards I would certainly not know that Cassandra had shown interest in men before, nor would I know that Cullen had shown interest in women (I haven't seen Cassandra's extra content, and I've never played a female mage Warden.) In that context, I wouldn't have any idea if I would be able to romance Cullen and Cassandra as a straight character. Heck, even now we don't know for sure that these characters aren't totally homosexual: yes it's unlikely, but we don't know.

Maybe it's because I'm not terribly super interested in Cullen, and I never really get around to Lesbianing until my third playthrough, but I don't really think they owe us this information. The dedication of the Masked Empire makes it abundantly clear that BioWare is thinking about its queer fans when it designs games, and I'm sure they think of us when they write romances. While I'm hardly confident that my favorite LI will be available to me, I am confident that I can expect well written queer romances from this game. And we'll all survive the couple month wait.

No, it's not real life. It's a work of fiction in which you vicariously experience things like being a great warrior, a charismatic leader, and a hero who saves others and earns their place in history. These are things people desire and they're assumed to be in the game. If BioWare didn't provide them, their games would be far less popular.

Sex and romance are also things people seek out in works of fiction. The idea that the hero is desirable is one you'll find in many books, films, and TV shows.

Preach, Maria.

For reals, I was actually under the impression that Cullen only found a female Surana attractive. I didn't know the Amell crush was present until about a year ago.

Imagine this, my people, what if all the characters are playersexual, but ONLY if they're a certain race? IMAGINE the rioting.

So kinda like back in Baldur's Gate, Arcanum, and most other games back in the old days?

Actually, I don't think Cassandra has shown particular interest in men either come to think of it.

Aye. No dwarfy or half-orc romances for you, sorry losers!

Mmm. It would please me if Cass was only into Lady!Inquisitors, but didn't she have... something with that mage in DotS? I fell asleep.

All I've seen are trailers for the movie?  I don't think there was anything particularly romantic though aside from a kiss on the cheek which I don't think has to be romantic.  Someone who's watched the movie can certainly correct me.

Sexuality is important because it propagates the species and helps establish social networks.

The other things humans tend to desire - food, clothing, shelter - are provided in abundance in the modern world. If getting a pleasing sexual and romantic partner were as easy as buying a hamburger or a new coat, we'd probably become indifferent to its inclusion in a game.

And yet no one asks if we will need to eat to survive in this game, despite food being a very desirable part of life.

Getting a pleasing sexual partner in a video game doesn't equate to doing so in reality. It really is nothing more than buying a hamburger. A purchase made to experience a basic pleasure. A hero finding romance in his quest to save the world or whatever is about as far removed from actual human romance as dying in the game is to dying in real life.

There's no romance in DotS, correct. It's just subtle romantic tension at best.

Rub it in why don't you?  I'm already resigned the idea that is extremely likely for Varric to end up as "Bianca sexual" again, even though I wish it weren't so.   :crying:

At least seemed to be leading up to it.

...Which might have been one of the reasons I turned it off and haven't looked back since. Apart from the awful anime style.

You turned it off for that? Why?

I suggest giving it a chance. It's decent for a video game based movie. But to each their own.

So if a character happens to be gay, it means your hero is undesirable she is female? That makes no sense at all. Surely that can't be the only motivation for romantic interaction in a video game. To believe that a fake character finds your created character attractive and worthy of romance.

Depending on the gameplay, I may ask for that.  It's always one of the first mods I have for Fallout and Elder Scrolls.  Particularly in Fallout where you have to balance it out with radiation poisoning.

Ha. I wish I had known that before I rolled my half elf. Having three psycho chicks fight over him was a Do Not Want.

Then I played female and got hit with Ameodouchecanoe. NOPE. I put on my evil hat midway through those playthroughs and never went back.

In sandboxes, I do prefer things like food.

If I could, I'd have to build the campfire too. :D

edit: On that note, I doubt Dragon Age will be a full blown sandbox anytime soon. I don't expect that. They're much more narrative based, and gamey. Rather than simulation based.

Have you played Rust? No romances, but all the hunger and campfires you could ever want.

I'm tempted to get that make a portable camp for Skyrim mod. I don't mind the option as long as it's not forced (plus my dragon born is tired after clearing ruins.)

Just googled it. Looks pretty cool. Although my computer sucks (mostly game on consoles now).

Sick and tired of straight romance. Very sick and tired. At some point you've seen everything and realize that it's the same relationship over and over.

I weep for joy everytime I find a TV show or book that doesn't have some kind of pointless romance attached to it.

It's not even a romance story though. It'd be different if it created those expectations. It's an action movie.

I'm not going to act like it's the greatest thing, but enjoy it for general Dragon Age..ness. Err.. or something :) That's all it's meant for. For general DA fans.

That kinda makes it even worse. It's an action movie, so why the need for a romance (or romantic tension) that adds absolutely nothing to the overall story? It wouldn't bother me if it wasn't like that in every piece of media ever. No matter if romance adds to the story or not, it's there. And you can't avoid it. You can't even control who participates in the romance. My eyes are starting to hurt from all the eye-rolling. It's a pain, I tell you.

That's why I love games like Dragon Age. Want a romance? Go ahead! Don't want a romance? Sure, no prob! Want the main character to romance that specific character? Have at it!

It wasn't the only reason why I stopped watching, mind you. I wasn't that taken with it to begin with and then they started throwing a male and a female together and forcing them to work as a team (NEVER seen that before)...it was the proverbial last straw. All I want are more stories about best friends going on adventures together, sisters fighting dragons, brothers seeing the world, mothers and daughters setting out to find lost treasures, fathers and sons tricking ogres...ANYTHING but another male-female pair that spends half their time fighting because of the oh so irresitible sexual tension. *huffs*

Fair enough. If it irks you, I'll respect that. I know there's plenty of hetero people who won't watch stories with homosexuality either. I happen to like books/tv/film more than games myself. I like the other characters being out of my control.

This is very much how I'm seeing it.  I feel as though the only way we could be fair in this regard, is if we specifically announced that they were bisexual and available for all (though those that would prefer more defined sexualities would be upset).  I'm not really convinced that announcing it would make the situation better....  At best it'd make some people content, but anger other people.

Allan, it feels like you are probing this person a little too much. Their concern isn't that difficult to understand. And I know you are a smart/insightful guy. ;)

Are you asking these questions in order to gather information to take back to Bioware staff? Suspicious... >.>
