"Conversations will be gated by events, not approval levels."

If this is so (according to Bioware) then how can you romance an NPC? My understanding of an NPC is that he/she cannot party up with you. If conversations (which lead to romances) are gated by events (at which you must be present), I assume the Inquisitor must travel to said events and have said party members there in order to trigger said conversations and develop the whole nuanced/story-driven romance that Bioware has been boasting about.

I am genuinely curious - how would an NPC romance work? NPC's are static and they can't accompany you. If an NPC *can* accompany you from event to event to event, then I am confused.

When you get back from completing a quest, it can initiate. Like how Alistair confronts you after returning from Redcliffe regardless if he was there with you or not.

1. Your text on the dark forum background is difficult to see.

2. There's no reason to assume that an NPC must be present at an event to react to it.

That sounds kind of boring. So if - hypothetically speaking of course - you fail to check back, you can miss out? Bioware boasted that companionships and romances were very story driven and deeply ingrained. This concept of "checking back in" feels... disjointed. I mean, at least in theory. I have no idea how it will actually be - I know. I'm just still confused.

Also how would your NPC romance know anything about what happened? Carrier pigeon? lol

- What?

Edit: oops. I fixed that. My hands must have slipped. I admit it. I am Dramatic Hands Mustache Man.

Just look at Mass Effect. You romance characters as the story progresses and by picking the love options. No approval system needed.

Why are you being rude?

I'm saying I have never played, so I was not aware that was how Mass Effect worked. Cripes.

No, conversation options will be made available by certain events, but you have to go to a safe zone to initiate.

Afer completing mission (in 99 % main plot missions) companion could have something to say and then thats all...

Well they said that we will be able to talk to them at any moment in safe zone so what is point talking without talking?

Oh - are we able to turn to a companion and start a conversation like in Origins? I wasn't clear on that one.

Yeah, as am I. I'm confused about romancing NPC's since I've never done that before, and I'm confused about having ongoing conversations and interactions with an NPC who will not be present for most of the drama that is intended to go down throughout the game.

It's the same as when you can talk to Leliana about her past, you have to progress the game past Lothering and then return to camp once more before she will mention it, but only in camp.

There will be flags within the game that sets a variable to "true" when you pass certain points within the story and those variables will allow you to initiate a new conversation string with targeted companions, but not anywhere. Only in safe zones. Which I assume are cities, your camp and the keeps.

Can the event include the NPC, even if the NPC isn't in the party?

Can an external event that doesn't directly involve the NPC still be used as the catalyst for a romance?

It all depends on what it means by "event."  I don't see why events necessitate that a love interest be present with the player in order for the love interest to know that the event has happened.

If you have to be back at base-camp for the plot to progress, the NPC can just have the gate conversations then. It's not hard to do if you just require the two to be in the same level at those critical points.

Wait. We are allowed to have a romance with NPCs outside the party?!.. Where did you get it from?

As for 'How it works?' - remember NWN1.

One of things I totally loved about Aarin Gend was that man was doing his job instead of following you around, and it never stopped romance from happening (well, that's if you could pass his CHAR and INT stat checks I mean....and if you leveled up fast enough to trigger the dialogue before ending the chapter... :P )
