Hi,

On a bit of an information gathering exercise. So here are some questions.

1) What is the main reason you chose the PW you play on? (or if you don't play on PWs, why not?). Feel free to give a shout out to you PW here.

2) What features/rules/etc do you consider essential for any PW?

3) What turns you off from playing on a specific PW? No bitching about specific servers here please, keep it nice.

4) Any other thoughts?

hi,
1. I don't play on PWs. I have tho: low population worlds w/ NwN, and before that tuns of Everquest I
    - reason to: awesome stories naturally evolve out of groupPvE !!!!
    - reason not: the realtime component is stressful. And, dividing time between SP and MP just doesn't work for me -- MP is a state of mind and a skillset that shines or grows rusty; so is SP, but on SP i have Pause.

2. If choosing a PW to play on now, I'd find this essential: that it can be solo'd. Not just the mechanics, but that it has a story (or five), and other viable SP methods laid down as fundamental/integral, which the PW is build *on top* of.

Raiding was a butt-kissing, guild-oriented powertrip that I never got (far) into.

if I see "grind" or even "camping" mentioned anywhere, am gone.

Not that i'm against party-play ... that's what makes PWs so great. But I learned to stay away from worlds that 'encouraged groups'

Crafting. PvP (not for the sake of PvP, which has its adherents ofc, but as a social-realism element).

4. yeh, lots of anecdotes ( some quotes )
    - "Damn ponies ..." (Dwarf's take on tuff centaurs)
    - "You've got the power, man. USE IT!" (advice from a Ranger about the necro skell pet)
    - hitting level on the exact same mob as a beautiful Druid babe, when deep in a high level dungeon ......
    - etc etc

I'll start by saying that I have only experienced a handful of PWs: Dammendrech (played there for about a year and a half), Dasaria (been playing there for half a year), Sea of Dragons (played there for a month) and Dalelands Beyond (a few weeks). I've tried a couple of others, but too briefly to judge. Now, to the survey:

1) All of the aforementioned servers are/were RP worlds, so that's the section I tend to look at. I'm primarily attracted by the lore, setting, atmosphere... That's what I liked the most about Dammendrech and it's still my favourite PW ever. To put another example, I tried Xenograph once, though briefly, because I wanted to see how a futuristic PW would look like. Quality of RP between players is also very important, but that comes without saying and you can't experience it until you're actually there.

To a lesser extent, there are some mechanical features that may attract me: I'm generally not a great fan of neither epic levels, nor of classes' additions, restrictions and so on (Dasaria is a good example of this, and so was Dammendrech). However, the most popular PWs are level 30 and have Kaedrin's classes, so my view is probably not the majority's here.

2) Population. Take out people and multiplayer loses its function. I'm actually not that fond of PWs with 50+ players, but a decent one is necessary. Dasaria's population is relatively low in comparison to other PWs, but it does the job. Dammendrech's was very, VERY low when I played, and this ultimately lead to the server's death.

I agree with kevL about having quests or some kind of stuff to do when you are alone or not feeling too social (or just want to kill something for a change of pace). Dasaria, even though it's aimed at parties primarily, has a lot of quests (repeatable after every reset and soloable, providing you survive) all round the server, and I think this is a good way to do it.

DMd events on a regular basis, good RP quality between players (including factions), friendly/welcoming players and staff, etc.

3) The opposite of any of the above, I guess. Population in the first place. If everytime I look I see zero players on, I'm better of playing a single player module. If I log and everyone's a jerk, they can go jerk themselves (not that I've really have any experience with jerks when trying a new PW, but it's a possibility).

"MMO feel": OOC as a standard and players running around like headless chickens trying to be the first ones to get the Sword of Doom +5000. Level 40. Level 50. Epic relevels (in Realms of Trinity I think), however that works.

If I think of something else, I'll post it later. I have to go now.

Former NWN2 player here, but I've played on several PWs for about 8 months.

1) What is the main reason you chose the PW you play on? (or if you don't play on PWs, why not?). Feel free to give a shout out to you PW here.

Interactive storytelling with DMs and fellow players, similar to a PnP session. Effort put into detailing the environment. Challenging, yet friendly to beginners. A strong game economy.

2) What features/rules/etc do you consider essential for any PW?

A strong leadership. A PW stands or falls with this, and by looking at who's in charge you will often know what to expect as a player.

3) What turns you off from playing on a specific PW? No bitching about specific servers here please, keep it nice.

Trolls. Cliques. Lack of dynamic. Things that negatively affect competitive play, such as overly modified game rules.

I would have to second Kevl on the fact that a good PW regardless of type should have plenty of SP content for when a player is on alone or wishes just to run solo. both story wise and quest wise.

A good economy is an absolute must have, both in the amount of gp and xp that is given out. I have played on several that it seems that you can hit lvl 10-20 in no time and have so much gold that it takes the fun out of doing the quests and fighting creatures to find better equipment or gold as you have the ability to buy anything you want multiple times over. which can lead to bored players either leaving or ruining the rest of the populations fun.  A good balance is needed to keep this from happening. You don't want a player to hit LVL 10 and have a so much money that they have to either put some in a bank or just give it away( and yes I have seen this happen on many servers)
