Well, apart from my ulterior motive of wanting to spare him if possible, my Warden picks who offers them the best chance to win: himself.

If I want to kill him and ally with Anora, letting Alistair do it is the best way of getting what I want while absolving myself of responsibility. On paper, though, I think only Wynne would be a worse bet in winning the duel. Alistair's personal issues with Loghain are exactly why I'd want to keep him out of that duel. Anger can make you sloppy, and that could be fatal against an old vet like Loghain.

I dunno... it makes no sense to me for the Warden (or Alistair) to throw away their weapon at that critical moment and grab a corpse!sword. I guess I just don't have a very good imagination.  (In addition to being slow on the up take.)

Also, don't get me started on Teh Murder Knife... WHERE DO THEY COME FROM???? Some invisible back sheath? Is it a Ferelden thing? And why is Isolde carrying? WHHHHYYYYY????

Edit because spelling.

Same.  It makes even less sense if you're playing as a non-Arcane Warrior mage (only when I play Amell Warden) and have pretty much no points into strength.  The minimum strength requirement is around 18 and by end-game, my non-Arcane Warrior mages have around 14-15 strength.  Logically, they shouldn't be able to pick up the damn thing without dragging it behind them.  And honestly, who wouldn't use their own sword, axe, whatever to kill the archdemon?

Come to think of it, since when does a non-2-hander Warden know how to wield a greatsword?  I found it completely ridiculous to see my Amell Spirit Healer charge at the archdemon, wielding a greatsword like it weighed nothing and she'd had years of experience with it.  And not the funny kind of ridiculous either.  I mean, my Arcane Warrior/Blood Mage Surana wielding it was kind of funny considering how small she was, but I could have equipped her with one at any time.  You could get through the archdemon's hide with a sword, dagger, axe, greatsword, or battleaxe, so the Warden doesn't have to use that damn greatsword.  Especially since they stab down into the damn thing's neck.

Actually, how would an archer/non-Arcane Warrior Warden be able to put enough strength into stabbing the archdemon to go through the spine?  I mean, unless they manage to magically get the blade in between two of the vertebrae and sever the spinal cord, they would have to put a ton of strength into the blow to get through the bone.   :?

How funny would it have been if your PC that wasn't able to use that greatsword due to lack of strength points grabbed it then tripped over it on the way to hacking up the archdemon? That's all I can envision now because yeah... like no points in strength. Those swords have got to be heavy and if you are a mage elf... HOW do you even lift it up?

Well you do need a massive sword to at least penetrate through a thick archdemon skin. What I cant fathom is the depth of the wardens or alistairs bum in the landsmeet where they pulled out that massive duncan's sword from O.o

I guess their bum size depends on how many sugar cakes they eat and what armour they're wearing:D

I had Alistair fight Loghain and a strange thing happened. Loghain was hit with a paralyse spell. No-one else can interfere and there are no left over paralysis traps. It's happened twice.

Have you put paralyzing runes on his sword/axe/mace?  If so, that's what causing that.  I've put a paralyzing rune on Zevran's sword and he ended up trapping the archdemon in a paralyze spell three times in the same battle.  :P

The mage in question was likely using Ser Jory's Balanced Greatsword. It has no strength requirement, so any mage can pick it up and start swinging it as if he/she was Conan the Barbarian.

Well that at least makes some kind of sense.

The Wrath of the Alienage compels my City Elf Warden to step forward, defeat, and execute Loghain on their behalf.

If I feel generous one playthrough, I'll let Alistair step forward, defeat, and execute Loghain on behalf of Duncan and the Grey Wardens.

Haven't used anyone else.

I've had my Warden do it for the screenshots.

<-----

Though, really it depends on how I roleplay my character and the results I want for the Landsmeet.  I would prefer to have Alistair do it, but his insta-kill move makes me reconsider sometimes.

Generally my rule is to let Alistair do it if I want to put him on the throne without marrying Anora, since I figure he should triumph over Loghain in front of the nobles; or I'm playing as a mage (it just doesn't seem right to battle him with magic).

Otherwise, I do it myself -- either way a Grey Warden will be the one to trounce him.

I think the trope you're looking for is "The Napoleon", OP.

Since my Dalish warrior was the bloodthirsty type, I chose him. I think I'll be doing it myself more often since Anora refuses to marry her father's murderer. I mean, how dare she?!

The LI - which means, Zevran.

Plus there's that nice irony that Loghain hired him to kill the Warden, and now the Warden asked him to be his Champion and kill Loghain.

But, I'm now starting a playtrough with a girl who will romance Alistair - for the first time since I got the achievement. >.> And it will be Alistair who will fight Loghain.

Always fight Loghain with the warden. It seems a bit cowardice otherwise imo.

And I don't like Alistair automatically killing Loghain without giving it a second thought.

Alistair every time, it only seems right that he should be the one to do it, since he is the one who is, every now and then, talking about how he wants to get back at Loghain.

If I did it I would have spared him in the end, as it is something my character would have done but I wouldnt want to loose Alistair over it, so choosing him over myself eliminates some tough choises :P

huzzah!

I typically use Leliana by default, nothing beats my princess stabbity :D , and Morrigan as my secondary because I like seeing Loghain brought down with a bit of magic. I also sometimes like to use Shale, just for a bit of entertainment purpose and to make things a bit easier.

ALWAYS suggest Dog to do it first. Stoopid Eamon, watching Dog overwhelm Loghain would've been epic.

But I always have my warden do it, the idea of letting someone else do that fight just seems incredibly lame to me. Loghain says it best, "it is you or me the men will follow", so indeed it should be the two of you duking it out till the bitter end.

I suppose letting Alistair do it is kinda ok though, he is relevant to the scenario after all and he certainly wants to do it, but sod it cuz I wanna keep Loghain.

Anyone else though just feels totally wrong.
