Cullen has always stuck me as a serious person. I suppose I think of him as serious, dedicated and forthright. I really liked the conversation you have with him after he's been tortured by Uldred and co where you can say to him

'I bet you're embarrassed about saying all those things about me' and he basically responds by putting you right in your place and letting you know that he doesn't give a rats what you think in the circumstances.

He might be a little awkward romantically but he's really quite strong about who he is and what he's doing. At least that's how I imagine him and I can't wait to meet him in Inquisition and see what he's REALLY like.

So I never heard this before and really would like to see that. I can't find anything like this when searching for dialouge past the broken Circle quest. What I found was:

http://dragonage.wik...uest_(Fem!Mage)

http://vieralynn.tum...llen's-dialogue

<-- video of mage returning after the quest is over.

The weird thing is that DG seemed to dislike NPC romances, so I figured they wouldn't ever be implemented.

I'm just going to hope that he's an LI and not the first NPC romance, though if he is, I'm going to pray that they do the romance justice :P

DG is just one person and if the "team" decides to develop something he would have to go with it. But yeah, NPC romances are not something I enjoy and I hoped this was something the DA team also thought. It does however look like this is what will happen. :(

By the way, for the arachnophobes among us - this game may be just what you need! It'll be like exposure therapy!  :D  ;)

NO!

(This has not worked before for me.)

Popping in to add something...

His ridiculous amounts of sexual frustration and being uncomfortable with sexual things in general will be hilarious in a romance. Like, he can't even bring himself to say the word, "prostitute." LOL. That is all.

It's adorable. <3 I hope he is the same.

A serious person, never uncertain (shy) when it comes to work and taking command. He takes duty and honor seriously. He is used of bossing people around all day and making life and death choices. But when it comes to flirting, love, sex he is just self-conscious (NOT naïve). Ofc he knows all about it, thinks about stuff like that, even have had some practice more or less.

He doesn't think romance or sex is something he should deal with in his role as a Templar Commander. It's for private life. Then suddenly he is "private" and he is just a little bit awkward. You know, it was all business and now he is on uncertain ground. Still once the romance is in motion, after a stuttering start, he will get courage and be ALL THAT!!! You know just... OOOMPH! Get here you... and I will show you... and swooping happens.

And we all swooned and lived happily ever after.

Maker I hope he pursues the romance, like Alistair did. Coming after you like a train wreck!!! I loved that the most with Alistairs romance.

*Looks back wistfully at the rock she emerged from under, then takes a deep breath*

Er, hi.

I've been lurking on this thread for a while and this has been such a consistently warm, welcoming place that I've finally mustered up enough courage to stop creeping about and make myself known. Delurking's become increasingly popular of late, so I thought I'd join the fray. Since this is my first time posting on any sort of forum, I'm sure I'm going to muck something up (why do there have to be so many buttons in this reply field!), so please forgive my ineptness while I learn the ropes.

With that out of the way, I'm going to dive right into Cullen (did you notice the innuendo? Yes? Yay!) :

I believe with 100% certainty that Cullen's a companion. Before you get your hopes up, it's not because I have any solid evidence to support that belief -- oh no, there's no sound reasoning to be found here -- it's because I secretly suspect Cullen's Tinker Bell  :P.

Now that I've fully emasculated our poor Templar (my Inquisitor will be doing a lot of that, Maker willing) let me explain: Just like Tinker Bell dies when people stop believing in her, Cullen will stop being a companion as soon as people stop believing he'll be one. So I'm going to plant myself firmly in the Cullen Companion Camp -- notice how it's alliterative, I'm counting that as further illogical "proof" that he's a follower -- and I won't be budging unless a dev's negative confirmation forcibly removes me from said camp. And even then I'll probably still hold onto some semblance of hope, just in case. Denial: it's not just a river in Egypt.

Now, people were posting Cullen theme songs earlier, and -- because I feel an overwhelming urge to test out that snazzy button labeled "Link" -- I'm going to hop into the fray and post one too! The song's a cover of Leonard Cohen's "I'm Your Man" by my absolute favorite singer, Dax Riggs. It's a live recording, so the quality isn't perfect, but I'm not going to miss an opportunity to promote an underknown artist. Besides, while the original sounds sexier, I think this version has a certain earnestness to it that better suits our dear Templar. Plus, Cohen's voice is too deep, and with lyrics like the following, you'll want to imagine Cullen singing the song to your Inquisitor:

"I'd crawl to you baby/ And I'd fall at your feet/ And I'd howl at your beauty/ Like a dog in heat/ And I'd claw at your heart/ And I'd tear at your sheet/ I'd say please, please/ I'm your man."

https://www.youtube....h?v=ZdXYIDGvu0Y

Okay, I think I'm going to stop abusing parentheses and masking my nervousness behind shoddy attempts at humor for now. I've been working on writing this and delaying actually clicking post for so long that, with my luck, no one's posting theme songs any longer, the thread's devolved into a mages vs templars debate, and the devs have confirmed that Cullen was nothing but a desire demon all along. But I'll just click post and hope for the best lest my sleep-deprived brain suddenly regain its higher reasoning skills, I reread this whole post, decide it's nothing but a rambling mess, and delete everything I've just written. Finally, I just wanted to let everyone know that I've enjoyed reading all of the squeeing, speculation, more squeeing, and further squeeing. This is such a wonderful little corner of the internet and you should all feel accomplished for creating an atmosphere that's so welcoming you managed to coax one of the lurkiest of lurkers out of her hole. :)

I'll try to fight my natural lurking tendency and post again in the future, but for now I'm off to bed then work in *looks at clock*... 5 hours. Whoops! :o

Damn am I the only console player (xbox) here? Kick all y'all asses I would  B) AND I'm left-handed, so take THAT! :P

A song that reminds me of Cullen:

*Snip*

From the prospective of the inquisitor to his/her reluctant templar lover :P

Nope! Or rather, I play DAO and DA2 on PC, but I'll be playing Inquisition on the PS4. Which, I sh!t you not, we bought after watching the "Discover the Dragon Age". We thought it the best way to make sure the game looks like that. *grin*  (Also, I'm left handed too!! )

What I'm most curious about Cullen is if the events of Kirkwall affected his psyche in any way. First blood mages infiltrated the Templar ranks. Then he saw Knight-Commander Meredith succumb to the effects of the red lyrium idol and lose her mind.

And now with the Fade tearing open, I wouldn't be surprised if part of his role in DAI is to help him maintain his sanity. After all, there's a whooooole lot of bad magic stuff happening out there!!

Mage Tarot! Long time no see!

Hello!

I think it'd be very interesting to see how similar (or different) our journey down the Cullen path has been, so a few questions below for all fellow Cullenites, ala "How I Met Cullen" style.  :)

(P/S: Feel free to ignore if this is a repeat of something that has been discussed to death before!)

  1. When did you first meet Cullen (e.g. as Amell/Surana, in the Broken Circle quest, or in DAII)? Broken Circle - I've never played as a mage in DAO.
  2. What was your first impression of Cullen? My first encounter with Cullen was in the Broken Circle quest, and I have to confess that it wasn't the best first impression. While speaking to him, my first two thoughts was "pyscho" and "broken", though I understood that he was acting that way because he had just been through hell. I felt sorry for him, but definitely didn't devote any further thought to him after completing Broken Circle.
  3. When did your impression of Cullen change (if ever)? I was very surprised that he appeared in DA2, as I had never found him particularly relevant to the DAO storyline. I treated him as a peripheral character throughout most of Act 1 and didn't pay any particular attention to him. The moment I became aware of Cullen as a distinct character in his own right? That scene when rogue Hawke returns from the Deep Roads, and Cullen was at Gamlen's house to bring Bethany to the Circle. I thought it was impressive that he was capable of being courteous (and kind) towards Bethany, even though he didn't have to be (given his past experiences and the situation in Kirkwall). His gradual growth as a character between Act I and Act III, and his actions in the final act of DA2 sealed the deal for me. How could you not enjoy a character who had the inner strength to stand up to Meredith (despite having personally experienced the worst of what mages could do), and had the guts to disobey orders and let a pro-mage Hawke go after the battle, because it was the right thing to do. I reached the point of no return after that.
And that kids, is the story of How I Met Cullen.

Regardless of whether Cullen is an NPC or a companion, I'm still pleased as pie that he's definitely appearing in DAI, and that we get to see him develop further as a character. Bring it on, Bioware!

1. I first met Cullen watching my sister play the mage Origin. I started w/ a Dalish elf and a Human noble, but hadn't made it to the Broken Circle yet when I had made her try the game (I have a prob w/ creating and re-creating the same character numerous times)

2.  I thought it was super adorable that he had a little crush on the female mage, but didn't put too much stock into the character since I was 95% sure he was gonna die like all my previous PC origin romances (Tamlen and then Dairren)

3. After watching the mage origin I decided to make my own mage, and then by the time I met up w/ him again in the Broken Circle quest I found myself really curious about this character. I was pretty upset that I couldn't talk to him about his feelings concerning the mage, or what happened during his torture by the demons once I finished the quest and saw him in the main hall on re-visits. By the time DA2 came out, I had already developed an interest in the character, and seeing him return gave me really high hopes that I could learn more about him and that they would develop his story more. Greg Ellis deserves a lot of the credit for my interest also, he did such a good job as Anders in Awakening and all the other minor NPCs, his characterization of Cullen just really played out well.

When did you first meet Cullen (e.g. as Amell/Surana, in the Broken Circle quest, or in DAII)?
-- Mage Origin, but I don't remember him. I AM THE WORST CULLEN FAN EVER. I didn't start paying attention to him until DA2, really.

What was your first impression of Cullen?
-- Unmemorable, it seems.

When did your impression of Cullen change (if ever)?
-- After plaing DA2, when he had more screen time. I knew he was from DAO, and that made me happy. (I love it when old characters are reused, like recycling!) So the next time I played DAO, I took notice.

wow so I saw this start up...2 days ago? and now already 130 pages....man and here I thought I would be able to catch up to this one...doesn't look like I will be able to so im just going to awkwardly slide myself in here and say hello.

Congrats to all the fellow Cullen fans on the news! Go Cullen!

And no matter what direction my character ends up going in, in the game. I just hope i can get that templar to turn into a stuttering tomato so bad so that Varric will write stories about the tortured templar. muahahhaha.

This is similar to my story.

In DA2, you get to see a bit into the man, and how the whole Broken Circle thing was still affecting him. I got interested in learning more about him (And I will be honest in that I think Greg Ellis' voice is hot. *Smile*).

Sooooo this is completely random, but, I am extremely curious: What song would you pick as Cullen's theme/song that describes Cullen the best to you? *shrugs nonchalantly*

Levi Kreis - I Should Go for Cullen and female Amell Warden in DA:O when he runs away after the flirt option.

That's part of karmas companion mod. You can recruit him after you have sided with the templars, that's part of the dialogue.

Just finished recruiting him myself....massive tent time coming up

I don't know why, but since the first time I heard this song it reminded me of Cullen. His struggle to get beyond his hate/mistrust of Mages, his guilt of being part of the Right of Annulment.

The song that most reminds me of his arc in DA2 (although I guess at least the end of the song applies to many of the major characters at the end of that game) is Cry for Judas by the Mountain Goats.

Hi ^^

When did you first meet Cullen (e.g. as Amell/Surana, in the Broken Circle quest, or in DAII)?
-- the Broken Circle but I didn't pay that much attention to him. I started to like him in DAII and payed lot more attention to him after that.

What was your first impression of Cullen?
-- I wonder if I can break this magic barrier? No? Okay you stay there then. Those were pretty much my thoughts. I didn't think much of Cullen XD

When did your impression of Cullen change (if ever)?
-- After playing DA2, then after reading more stuff online about his character and thinking his character more myself too. I guess I slowly started to like him. So my view has changed a lot but it never has been negative about him, just from indifferent to pretty dedicated XD
