one other thing tho regarding the whole "pain" deal, like for example mage Hawke if he is a blood mage he/she has a move that  stabs him/herself with the staff, and also drains a lot of health , and that thing looks like it hurts like a B!tch  so I guess my question is, even if someone do cuts the hands of the mage and even if the mage is in pain wouldn't they kind of trigger an un-voluntarily blood magic ability of sorts?

Yeah...technically I guess you could involuntarily trigger blood magic. Anders did mention that mages often discover blood magic and its power after accidentally cutting themselves.

As he looked towards the sky, Jace felt it coming. His head felt like it was on fire, as his sense of dread crystallized in molten fear. The air was rent by a discordant sound, a vibration in the air that grated against more than just Jace's ears. This note resounded through his very soul. If he could have raised his tired arms, he would have clapped them against his ears. As it was, he could only watch as the sky tore above. As if someone had taken a sword to the very air, green light scythed across the sky. The jagged line widened, leaving a large rip in the sky that was nearly two miles long. Now Jace could hear discordant singing, what he knew to be the call of the Fade. Snatches of sirenous melodies fluttered through his tired mind, and as he began to succumb to exhaustion, he could see dots of green fire shooting off in every which direction, demons now freely crossing the Veil. His eyes began to close, and as they did, he dimly felt his right hand burn, a sensation out of place in his tired body. The last thing he heard was the roar of a dragon.

(That can be dangerous, though. My mother wanted to know what a restraint was like so I said I was just going to do the motions and talk her through it. Unfortunately my instincts kicked in an I ended up actually restraining her. Thank goodness she's a good sport!)

I doubt they'd show the Black City anytime soon, if it is indeed within the game. I believe that they'd leave that as a surprise in game.

Here's the part of the scene I was asking about (with no context, for added fun! ) Dailisa Cousland is my warden.

And go wary-there's obviously some violence here.

     The mage laughed humorlessly. "Does the king know about Nathaniel? Or will you just pretend you haven't been fu...ack!" 

     Dailisa had her right hand around Velanna's slender neck before the elf could finish her sentence. "This isn't about me at all, is it Velanna? It's about you. Let me tell you something, little elf. You don't have the faintest idea what you're talking about. You only think you do." She stopped as she saw something out of the corner of her eye and glanced down to see that the elf's hand was glowing slightly. 

     She let go Velanna's throat and the elf said, "I know that you're a ****** who doesn't deserve hi..." this was cut off by a screech as Dailisa had Velanna's wrist and slammed it against the wall several times in quick succession.

     Then the Warden Commander was being dragged away in a headlock while Velanna fell to the floor. Dailisa immediately started swinging, even though she knew it was Nathaniel and as she was unceremoniously hauled out of the dining hall, she heard Anders say, "Andraste's gag reflex, Velanna! You're lucky she didn't break your neck for you. Let me look at it."

I actually thought that, too, Eric, but I agree with Eluvianix that I don't think it's something they'd give away, especially so early.

I'm not an expert on mage lore by any stretch, but I'm going to guess I'm one of the people in the thread who has done more physical interventions than most? That being the case...

 

People almost always have at least one "tell" when they're becoming escalated. As that is happening, they are gathering energy - whether they're planning to use that energy to throw a punch or cast a spell, it would be the same principle. It's not so much that you would see something magical, as that you would see there's some sort of attack coming because people are rarely calm enough in an altercation to avoid giving any signs of escalation.

 

You absolutely can interrupt, but I would not recommend bringing one hand down to the person's side because they are probably just going to use their other hand, and by their side is not a secure position for the hand you're holding because there's too much freedom of movement. I would probably put the person in a basket hold at that point, but what happens next really depends on the context (i.e. are there weapons involved, are you trying not to injure the person, etc.)

This just makes me want to give you a big hug that you need to know how to do this.

If magic makes any sense in Thedas then I would think that you don't need your hands to use magic.

I have an odd Dragon Age related question, but not Cullen related. I just don't know a better group to ask, to be honest. I have a scenario-If two people are at the "in each other's face" portion of an argument-You know, right before someone swings (*grin*). Say one of them is a mage, the other a fighter. 

Is it possible for the fighter to 1) know that the mage is gathering mana, and 2) Interrupt by jerking the mage's hand down to their side? Would it work if the warrior broke the mage's wrist?

 

I know that this thread has several people far more versed in mages than I am.

 

(also, just assume these are hypothetical questions? It's for science! ...well, writing. Same diff. )  

The only thing I wanted to add is that you really wouldn't see these scenarios in the game. We really have no idea if a regular person could tell if someone was gathering mana. And from the 'cutting off hands' scenario already discussed, I think even knowing what it would take to *really * interrupt someone's casting concentration is debateable. I mean, in game, you have a stat that determines your concentration. Not so much in RL. So, for my two cents, I'd say write what you want and makes sense for your story. I make stuff like this up all the time.

Thank you for that. It's what I end up doing (All.The.Time), but I really do like to at least reference check, where possible. More because I like learning more lore type things, to be honest. That's half the reason I write fan fiction (The other half, like lately, because I get some stories in my brain that won't shut up.)
