In DAO staff was not required to cast spells. And I think there was also a codex entry, or maybe it was the class description, which said that mages need to do certain gestures with their hands to cast spells. In DAO we see mages doing it a lot, from directing a simple wave of energy at the locked door in Magi Origin, to casting the Storm of the Century. In Asunder Wynne also does spell casting with her fingers too.I think that cutting hands might prevent a mage to cast spell. Normal mages aren't show casting them in other way, except with a staff. Abominations probably don't follow this rule.
Though I don't recall if it was ever stated how mage kids cast spells without wanting to, if they still use their hands or not. It might be that cutting hands prevent mages to cast spells just because they're not focused enough to cast them in that moment.
This just makes me want to give you a big hug that you need to know how to do this.
Aw, thanks, but I'm not the one who deserves hugs here. I chose to be doing what I'm doing. The people who deserve hugs are the ones who need that kind of intervention, because they didn't choose it. ![]()

So much respect. Thank you for what you do. ![]()
I made an inquiry to Dark Horse about the DA: I artbook release date. Looks like they got the date wrong, and they corrected it.
Amazon is still cheaper atm.

I didn't mean that mages need staff, but that the only way shown to use magic other than with the hands is while using a staff. In DAO staff was not required to cast spells. I believe you need hands mostly as the focus point or to direct the spell, but perhaps a very experienced mage can cast even without using her hands. Rituals are more complex, and they require to use hands, and the mage's full attention. I think the most powerful spells work just like the rituals too.
Also agree that pain makes mages lose the focus. You could avoid that in Origins if you were deliberately training your mage for combat (there was a skill or a talent for that), but I think if the mage is used to peaceful life in the Circle, they don't develop this skill. That's why in Asunder Evangeline had no problems with breaking Adrian's concentration, for example.
I didn't mean that mages need staff, but that the only way shown to use magic other than with the hands is while using a staff.
I forgot about the codex entry, and it's possible that experienced mages might not need hands/staff to use magic (kind of like in Harry Potter).
Thank you!
Hey, does anyone know what's the difference between the WoT edition with Morrigan cover art, and the WoT edition with a mage dude on the cover? I found where to buy it with free shipping to my country, but the cover looks different.
All the actual covers have Morrigan. The mage dude was a placeholder image.

And that's the confusing thing. In TME they took the staffs (staves?) away from the mages as if that somehow curtailed their power. I sometimes feel like the book descriptions are a better indicator of how things looks/feel/really happen in Thedas since game mechanics are computer-based game mechanics, but in some cases the books just make things murkier. Like how Evangeline seemed to use (need?) her sword when using her templar skills.
Well, I recall that last summer, when they see asked if mages can equip other weapons, some devs stated that staffs are important for mages in using their powers. Things might've changed, though using magic accidently without staff should be possible, since mage kids are recognized due to this type of magic. All the actual covers have Morrigan. Evangeline used her Disrupting magic ability on Adrian without weapon, by touching her.
Ah, that could be, since it would be an issue for giving mages any other weapon. That's how I always imagine the staff, though, as more of a focus for their powers but not completely stopping a mage.
On Evangeline, I just wish they actually explained what the heck she was doing with her sword since I'd never seen that before.

That spoiler could have been magical resistance made active instead of the passive ability for the story/writing/action/drama/whatever purpose. Or it could be something they teach Orlesian templars. She had abilities templars don't show in the game, like the
Spoiler
@Galagraphia: she stopped Adrian for using magic by touching her and focusing her powers in the hand. Their mana disrupt ability doesn't seem to require a sword to be used.
I don't know. The book called it 'aura of protection'.That spoiler could have been magical resistance made active instead of the passive ability for the story/writing/action/drama/whatever purpose. Or it could be something they teach Orlesian templars.
And I don't think disrupting magic requires the sword, quite the opposite, in fact (lol, I made Cullen use templar trick with his leg!) Sword just makes focusing easier, I think.
Well, Cullen had an aura in DAII. I don't remember what it did, probably nothingI don't know. The book called it 'aura of protection'.
Understood on the second party, and I think it could be as you said.

think we didn't see all templar abilities in games, maybe because our characters weren't trained within the order, and some skills were kept secret, perhaps? Just my theory.
So I've started watching Game Of Thrones. Quick question, when does Viserys die? I hate him.
First DAI dream last night!
I was in my house, looking out the window and saw some skeletons & evil mage heading down the street. So I yelled for my staff and started shooting fireballs at them, when one got too close I yelled for my sword - but my son didn't get it to me in time. Thankfully I took the mage down anyways, and then the local reverend mother gave me a tunic for some reason and I made out with Anders. I woke up disappointed it wasn't Cullen ![]()
My dreams about movies/literature/games always seem to take place in my real life. My fave is the one I had about LOTR - orcs were streaming over the hill towards the house, so we legged it down to the basement to hide. There were orcs already down there and I was really pissed because they had opened my freezer and cupboards and ate all my Christmas baking. ![]()

Omg this is hilarious!! XD You made my day!
I've only had one Dragon Age themed dream too. I was apparently default female Hawke and in some weird dungeon looking basement with Cullen. There was a body or something on the ground and we were supposed to study it only I kept trying to flirt with Cullen. He simply kept backing away and then I suddenly realised he was not wearing a shirt and his torso was "clipping" (kind of like the seams you can see in characters' necks sometimes in the game) and I remembered that he's a game character. That made me realise I wasn't fem!Hawke either which ended the dream.
No idea what the dead body on the floor was though. I was apparently too busy throwing myself at Cullen to take notice ![]()
