I'm just hoping his character will have progressed in DA:I to where he's the leader he obviously always had the potential to be.

And now I headcanon him as rather charmingly oblivious to certain things. Like mage staves...
It's just the Kirkwall, it's like this city is closed within some magical bubble, every templar that comes in gets their intelligence reduced (or booned) to doomb n' stoopid level.

I was going through my archives on tumblr and I came across THIS post about Cullen, and discussing the question of Cullen being viewed by some players as a 'heartless zealot' (something that the asker in the linked post calls him by). The author of this post makes several really great points and points out things that I didn't even realize before reading it, things that made me love Cullen even more. The analysis is on the long side, so I'm linking instead of copying/pasting, but it's one I love and I wanted to share

I think that's what he's going to be in DAI. It seems every companion in DAI will have some sort of significant role or are prominent figures in Thedas. So...if he was a companion...it would make sense, no?
If Cullen is a companion, what are you guys going to spec him as? Two-hander or Sword-And-Board?
I could see making him my main tank for most runs, especially for a mage Inquisitor. I imagine Cassandra will tank a few times for me, too, and making Cullen DPS and, ah-hem, swing that two-handed sword around.

Sword and board. I have a head canon (*points to link in sig*) that has him only using a two-hander for "practice" or when there is no other option.

When did you first meet Cullen (e.g. as Amell/Surana, in the Broken Circle quest, or in DAII)?
My first playthrough was with a Dalish rogue, so during the Broken Circle quest.
What was your first impression of Cullen?
I can't really remember my first impression of him, sadly. I do remember feeling mostly pity, mixed with some annoyance and frustration at his comments, though.
When did your impression of Cullen change (if ever)?
I was very surprised when he showed up in DA2. My first Hawke was a (pro mage) rogue, and Bethany ended up going with the Wardens, so I didn't see the part where he takes Bethany to the Circle. He was a returning NPC, though, and I felt a slight need to pay some extra attention to him because of that. My Hawke would drop by every now and then to chat with him, and he seemed polite enough, even if I really didn't agree with the things he had to say about mages. I started cheering him on a bit when he began to question Meredith. When the final battle came, I was sure that my Hawke was going to have to fight both Meredith and Cullen, but he surprised me and went against her. I actually felt a little proud then.
I'm really interested in seeing how his character further develops.

I'd prob make him my tank, so sword and shield for my game. Unfortunately poor Cassandra is prob gonna get left behind a lot since I'll want to drag Cullen and IB everywhere
