I always thought that Cullen was his first name as he's called Ser Cullen. If Carver is a templar he's called Ser Carver instead of Ser Hawke. 

 

Sadly it's not consistent among templars in DA lore.

Yeah to me that wasn't a clarification about a fact but more of him learning that Cullen has always just been "Cullen" (considering how little he knows about the world and the game, it's like, it was news to him.)

 

Plus he didn't/wasn't allowed to answer any other fan questions, so.

 

AND if they did "confirm" it to him, doesn't mean it wasn't done so in jest or that he was told to say that or that they didn't want to reveal the truth or... you get the picture lol
