I worry about Irving, he was in the Asunder novel. He's far too old to be running around dealing with that sh!t!

I read that hearing the voice of Danny Glover in my head.

But yeah, I worry about both Irving and Greagoir.

My Mage Amell looks to him as a father figure. So I will just head canon that when the sh*t hit the fan she left the wardens to find Irving and keep him safe....SHE IS NOT MISSING BIOWARE!! :D

But, but, don't you know the only reason we are fans is because he flirted with us in DAO and we fell madly in love with him? :P

Sh!t, really? I didn't get the memo!

I did actually kind of insta-crush on him in DAO... *embarrassed* Although I know what you're saying, and that there's a difference between that being the initial reason one might take a casual interest in his character and the reason one might still be interested after finishing the game / be interested enough to be sitting here discussing him on a forum.

I love the dwarf origins, I just hate playing as a dwarf. My least favourite is the Human Noble, because I just find it really generic and I hate posh peoples irl and I hated the whole Cousland family tbh, and finally I just loathe how the story just bums over that particular origin.

Reading DA Confessions kind of made me hate Couslands, and it seemed stupid to me to dislike what seems to be the most popular type of Warden, so a few weeks ago I tried playing through that Origin trying to make myself like it. I made my Cousland look like me and gave her my first name in an effort to make me identify with her and hopefully like her, but the whole hour or two just kind of made me want to barf (Servile, cringing elves! Schoolhouse "history lessons" devoted entirely to kissing my family's ass! A million options to be incredibly nasty and only a few to be more than a "basic politeness" degree of nice!). Which I'm sure was the intention, to show that they're growing up privileged etc., but still not my thing. I don't remember especially disliking the family, though.

But then, Jowan might be my least favorite character in the whole game, so there's that in the non-mage origins' favor.  :pinched:

Even though my Amell was a Lawful Good teacher's pet type, I couldn't work with Irving behind Jowan's back because Tranquility seemed so awful, but it seems like every single fanfiction I've ever read has her do that.

(EDITED to account for conversation having moved in the "did you rat out Jowan" direction already while I was typing...)

I wonder what he'll have to say if we side with the mages during the mage/templar war... providing they aren't red templars, obviously.

I'm not sure...
He seems like a pretty level guy, especially when you side with the mages in Kirkwall and he still defends you. I think he might support mages with some convincing, so long as you stress that mages ARE dangerous, but a lot of them are innocent people just trying to carve out a life. I can't see him siding with an Inquisitor that is radically anti-Chantry or pro-blood magic, but thats obvious.

Somehow I feel like things are going to be a LOT more complicated than just mage v. templar, though...

You can be very loving with your family. But I was thinking more of the staff and other non-family members. I don't remember details, just that I kept wishing there was a kinder option beyond what was available, and being appalled at some of the options that were available (though I was also appalled at the "fat cow" thing in the Mage origin).

I couldn't rat him out, even if I wanted to. See, my Warden is supposed to be me and the he's supposed to be our Warden's friend (even if he can be annoying) and I know for a fact that in that situation I would have helped him, even though we'd likely get caught because I'm loyal to a fault, so I based my Warden's actions off what I would do and have done in similar situations. To see it backfire definitely felt fitting, especially since stuff like that has very often backfired on me in the past too. That's also the reason why my Warden once had a silent crush on him, at least briefly because knowing me I probably would have fancied him at some point during the time spent with him, LOL!

I recall i can be nice to everyone. Howe, Nan, the sister, the scholar, ser Gilmore, the guards, Leandra's friend, her son. Granted, there are lots of option to be a jerk (which are present a lot in the Dwarf Noble though), but you can treat everyone nicely.
I played the origin dozens of times, so I'm pretty sure of it.

Same here, my Warden was also sort of a self-insert (self as of around the end of HS, so a bit more of a pushover than I am now; my Inquisitor will probably be a current self-insert, because my attempt at an RP Hawke wasn't as fun for me) and I'm definitely overly loyal as well. But in my case I found Jowan so annoying I had to headcanon around why we were friends in the first place

EDIT (for some reason quoting the Elder King keeps attributing it to LolaLei so I'll just copy and paste):

"I recall i can be nice to everyone. Howe, Nan, the sister, the scholar, ser Gilmore, the guards, Leandra's friend, her son. Granted, there are lots of option to be a jerk (which are present a lot in the Dwarf Noble though), but you can treat everyone nicely.

Given that you've played it dozens of times and I played it a week or two ago, I imagine we're both remembering correctly and just have different ideas of satisfactory niceness levels. *shrug*

I couldn't bond with a female Hawke at all, although I did do my first playthrough as a self insert. The Hawke I bonded with was my male sarcastic mage, he's great! In DAI my first playthrough will also be a self insert, so that'll be interesting especially if my Warden and Inquisitor meet since they'll be the same bloody person!  The only downside is that I definitely have better rogue skills than I do mage skills in real life (tried "witch craft" at school, set the waste paper basket alight and scorched a giant burn mark into the bath!)

Self-insert playthroughs are so fun!My Tabris was kind of my self insert in Origins and the first character I've created in the game. I even gave her a variant of my real name.

I'm seriously tempted to make my self insert playthrough my first one in Inquisition rather than my dalish mage, because then I'll know some things about the plot and thus choose the most fitting options for each of my planned characters .But then again I've been planning her for a long time so I'd like to see her in the game at last.

I was so torn between that one and the Strowlberry when I switched from my throwaway account name! The name is from my (non-DA-playing) husband's mishearing a dev with an accent talking about elfroot at PAX East, but I was surprised how many owl fruits are out there on the internet!

I've only felt really bonded to my female Cousland and male Amell in Origins. I did bond with a Female Surana once but I accidentally romanced Alistair instead of Zev for that one (idk how i was just being nice to alistair most of the time?) so i kind of screwed up that one. it was also the only playthrough i had where i did the ultimate sacrifice.

As for DA2, for the longest time I could only feel things for my sarcastic BroHawke warrior. I love how nice a sibling bond Sarcastic Hawke has with Bethany. (i had 1 or 2 fem Hawkes but could never bond with them), but after the inquisitor gameplay trailer came out, it made me want to play DA2 again so for the first time i tried an aggressive femHawke and well I grew quite fond of her.

I personally love the Cousland and Amell/Surana origins the most, the Dalish/city elves are pretty cool too. I've yet to try a Dwarf Commoner though.

Self inserts during the first ever playthrough is always the best experience when doing something like that because, just like the protagonist, you're thrown into this situation without having the faintest idea what you're doing so the pair of you are literally winging it together! I really love that aspect of not knowing where you're going or what to do next and feeling overwhelmed by the whole thing because I would imagine that's how your character is probably feeling too. Obviously, you'd feel like that during your first playthrough no matter who you played as, but I find that by recreating myself in game the experience goes beyond just a gaming and starts to reveal a few things about yourself and how you go about doing things in real life (within the games limitations, obviously).

Doing the same thing with DA:O really opened my eyes to a few home truths and problems I'd been ignoring up until that point. So I highly recommend it, if only for science!

I suppose I'll mention my four Wardens I have lined up for DAI since I don't think I've ever actually mentioned any of my characters before.

f!Amell w/ Warden Alistair - this is essentially the most "ran off into the sunset" playthrough... So a little generic and boring.

f!Brosca w/ Leliana - Joint hardened Alistair/Anora ruling. Hardened Leliana. Urn disappeared. Supported the templars. Killed the elves. Made Bhelen king. A circle was established in Orzammar. Destroyed the anvil.

m!Tabris w/ Zev - Did the US and left solo hardened Alistair as king. Urn disappeared. Spared the mages. Kaitlyn married Teagan. Cured the werewolves. Made Harrowmont king. Brother Burkel opened a chantry. Destroyed the Anvil.

m!Mahariel w/ Morrigan - Joint unhardened Alistair/Anora ruling. Hardened Leliana. Urn was found. Supported the templars. Knight-Commander Cullen took over. Killed the werewolves. Made Bhelen king. Spared the Anvil. This guy was a total ******* too.

Having a hard time deciding on which one I want to "import" first. They're all pretty different, but none of them let Loghain live. I think they all saved Redcliffe too because I had no idea you could leave the village to die.

My Amell (Male) didn't rat out Jowan, became disillusioned with the Circle, stole the Heartwood Staff, and sought out blood magic, considered tranquility worse than death.

My Surana (female) did rat him out to Irving. She was a loyalist to the Circle, if not the Chantry. Kinda like what Vivienne would be.

Back to Cullen, I'm a little sad that Blackwood is confirmed as a playable character, if only because it seems Cullen won't be (maybe I like symmetry, but I think it's going to be 3-3-3). As a straight male, I like him, and I don't want him to be a minor NPC.

I think what's scary for people who have never played a game like this as soon as it's released is the fact that there'll be little to no guidelines (eg. When I first played through I knew about Alistair and how you have to harden him. I can't wait for it though ;D now, I better sleep otherwise I'll look like a troll when I go to this interview tomorrow haha. See you tomorrow for the begonning of E3 folks! :)

Wow, I've never actually spared the anvil. What happens if you do spare it? Does that mean you side Branka? Also, I did not know you could leave Redcliffe to die.

It might just be that i'm not very sharp, but what i love about origins is that every time i play it again, i always discover something new, like a new conversation with someone i did not know i could talk to. For example, The first 2/3 times i played Origins i did not know there was a tavern in redcliffe! :(

It was already speculated he wasn't a companion since he didn't have a weapon in the last trailer, as Leliana and Scribbles.
He's not a minor NPC though. He's an advisor of the Inquisition and has a major role in the game :).
