I have tried. I can have better or worse periods of phobia, but it won't actually go away. I even payed once to go to a zoo where yu could work on your fear, hold spiders etc. It didn't work and I was worse after that. Funnily enough I am fine with arachnids like scorpions and crabs, but spiders... :crying:

I thought you were just meant to slowly progress to holding spiders and moving up when you no longer feel anxiety. Starting just by thinking and talking about them, then seeing a picture, then being around one, etc

My mom has a phobia of snakes, but she's gotten to the point where she can enter reptile houses. Still not able to walk up to the glass if a snake is in it though.

To make it worse, I ended up growing up to be a reptile person. :P  Never allowed to own a snake or any lizard that may resemble a snake in any way. She does love my leopard gecko, at the very least.

She also has asthma so I never got to do any jump scares as a kid. Dad made sure I understood "She can seriously die if you do that" lol

Yeah that is what they did. I went through all the steps. Just didin't hold one of the big arse spider. Took a good look though. Dem leg hairs...:(

There's a spider type we call "daddy long legs". They are ok. :)

Well, daddy long legs aren't technically spiders...

My sister has a phobia of insects in general (it started with spiders), though her reactions aren't always the same. Sometimes we can stand there without many problems, sometimes she flees terrified.
We made a kind of bet on her playing DAO this summer (not for the spider fears though). I wonder what her reactions would be.

While on the topic of spiders, I just saw one in my house. I went to grab a piece of newspaper so I could put it outside, but when I went back to where I first found it, it was no longer there. Now, I'm not usually scared of spiders, but OH MY GOD WHERE DID IT GO PLEASE DON'T HURT ME ;A;

Phobias suck.  Period.  I feel for you, I really do.  I have my own to deal with...and I have not mentioned this before because...well, just because....it's......

Dragon Age totally needs a giant basilisk as a fight now. Dragons don't count.

@Ser Alicia

I had a similar issue with a wolf spider about a week ago. Sucker was huge too.  :unsure: Kept feeling like it was crawling up my legs all night.

I usually just put them outside too, unless it's a black widow. Sorry bb, it's me or you. I'm not going to chance that one.

I suppose I could mention that I have a love/hate relationship with blue jays.  :angry:

What is it like having a phobia? I mean... you can ignore this if it's an awkward question, but I just want perspective from people that actually have one? I have a severe dislike for heights/high places I don't trust (and I'm not particularly fond of grasshoppers and flying roaches), but I don't feel it's bad enough to call an actual phobia

I think that Cullen and Cassandra will be both straight, and Varric probably bi, others will be bi/gay, or BioWare will do the same (all bi) as it was in DA2... ;-)

I don't know about others, but when I see a bee, I get hot all over, and there's this panic that grabs me that sort of wants to supersede everything else, including common sense.  It was really bad when I was a kid, but I've learned to have a lot more control over it through the years.  And it's really only the real, live thing that causes it now.  I was kidding about the jar of bees in the game. :unsure:  Really.  I was.

LOL, how did you manage that one!

It's really easy, you just have to make practical decisions. Yes, Alistair did bother me.

Well I dislike heights too.. but lately I think it has turned for me more into phobias side than just being strong dislike. I mean I feel.. weak when I'm in high places or see down somewhere. My hands will shake a little, sometimes legs too. It feels irrational but I can't do much to it. I can't just go near the railing of staircases, I start feel nauseous ^^;

I have a thing against all creepy crawlies, especially when they're inside my house! Am fine with video game creepy crawlies though. :)

Last summer, a couple of ladybugs found their way into my flat (via an open window), and I was so freaked out by I used a vacuum cleaner to kill them - I didn't dare try anything else for fear that they'd drop down from the ceiling on me (uggh).  In hindsight, I do feel quite bad about my over-reaction, but fear makes people do irrational things.

I wonder how many jars of bees we can carry around because I'm pretty sure it's going to be my favourite weapon, just imagine killing all these dragons with jars of bees :'-)

@everyone that responded to my question

Ah, I see. I see. I dislike heights enough that I can only bring myself to go on one of the water slides at Wet 'n' Wild (as an example of where my dislike is at), but I certainly wouldn't compare it to what's been described by you guys. Massive virtual hugs to all of you with phobias. :(
