The Carver/Hawke thing didn't really work for me because my brother and sister and I are very close and never fight, so I just kind of wanted to smack him for being such a jerk, lol! But I definitely liked him (and Bethany, too).
I've two older sh!thead brothers. Totally worked for me. Think wanting to smack him was sorta the point

I'd recognise that voice anywhere. Though it did take me a cool minute to recognise he was Guilmon in Digimon: Tamers.
I found him unrecognizable as Garcia in Shadows of the Damned.
Honestly, as much as I like Cullen, I'm not even going into it with the expectation that he'll turn out to be my main pick for LI. I know so little about the other characters, that one could completely surprise me and capture my interest far more than Cullen. So, while I can chat and speculate on my favourites/those I'm most curious about, I'm keeping a completely open mind. Things could easily change once I'm playing through the game and witnessing how the characters interact with my Inquisitors.

I do think it's weird when minor characters (says the Cullen fan, but he does have a LOT of fleshed-out dialogue to go on compared to others) generate these fandoms who then decide they know the character well and really don't.
I thought Dagna was adorable, for example, but I'm not going to demand that she be in DA:I "because I love her character." That'd be silly. She could be a raving sociopath for all we know about it, and I'd have no right to be mad at the writers for taking here there. 
I'm not at all interested in Cole, but he could be the next Aveline and end up being my favorite character instead of the waste of space in my party that I'll ignorantly assume he is. Who even knows, you know?
Heck, if Cullen isn't in the party, I might end up SO GLAD that he wasn't, because he's still a big deal in our story AND we get another companion to love since he wasn't taking up that spot. 
At this point I don't really expect to love or hate anyone since we don't know their personalities. I'm banking on enjoying them all since there's really only been one BW companion I've ever actively disliked.

I'm more excited, I think, about getting to know all the companions (and other assorted NPCs. *grin*). It's one of my favorite things about these games.
Ungh. Carver. The closest Bioware has ever hit to one of my all time favourite character types and the little sh!t ended up being the sibling.
I honestly can't play anything but a mage!Hawke just because I love that boy so much. (I have nothing against Bethany, mind! I just personally adore Carver-- especially if you take the time to work him up to friendship. Hawke and Carver's friendship relationship just gives me the best of sibling feels.)

See, I have a totally different perspective. I'm the older sibling by almost two years. My brother and I would fight, hard and often, until we drew blood. We were terrible to each other as kids, and even into teenage years. So when I see Carver being a dick, all I can think of is my own little brother. It's neat.
Bethany's the one I can't quite get. She so... well adjusted.

It's hard to think him with family but I think he has to have some. Or maybe he was abandoned when he was little and raised by chantry? That'd make sense. At least I don't think he's close with his family since he never mentions them and as templar he don't see them much.

I'll replay the game and try at least all the male LI's unless any of them are so repulsive that there's just no way (I'm honestly not expecting that).
I had nine complete playthroughs of DA:O, so if DA:I is as great as I think it will be, I'll be romancing more than just Cullen (even if he is mah favorite).
