It's hard to think him with family but I think he has to have some. Or maybe he was abandoned when he was little and raised by chantry? That'd make sense. At least I don't think he's close with his family since he never mentions them and as templar he don't see them much.

 

Yeah, see, I remember R2 and meanieweenie talking about this once -- how really, this shows how much we really don't know about him.

 

I mean, for all we know, he could have had his whole extended family with like 12 brothers and sisters all living in Kirkwall. Or Redcliffe. Right under our noses. Or they could be who knows where? None of our characters were ever close enough to him for him to mention something so personal.  I find that crazy after all our years of speculation about him. Something as simple as "is your mom living" -- like who the heck knows? So much of him is still a blank slate. And in the hands of the writers, that's scary!  

 

I tend to eye-roll at fantasy genres and their obsession with nobility, but I kind of like the idea someone in the old thread (I can't remember who and I'm so sorry or I'd give credit!) had that he's a youngest son of a noble lord or minor bann and there wasn't much to do with him besides find him a noble position with the Order. They didn't need any more heirs so why find a wife for Cullen?

Love interests tend to not make come backs in subsequent games, except maybe as a cameo, so there will be no more substantial Cullen   Not that this is worth losing a romance with him over but it's still sad to think about it.

The possibilities are so wide open!  Even something similar to the above (great idea!) like his family being in Redcliffe when it got attacked by the undead because of blood magic.... and he was just across the lake unable to help because he'd been magically imprisoned. You could just go on and on!!

This is why I don't have any kind of headcanon (or even speculation) when it comes to Cullen. I just don't know enough about the guy to come up with anything. Learning more about him is a part of why I'm really looking forward to seeing him in DAI, though.

Personally I like the "poor country boy who joined the Order because he dreamed of being a knight" scenario. It ties into his whole admiration of the Order (and why his subsequent disillusion is so heartbreaking).

While this does make me a little sad, I think that Cullen's story is sort of encapsulated in the Mage-Templar War, which I think the bulk of it (if not the entirety of it) will be dealt with in this game. If we're correct in thinking that the next game takes us further from Ferelden, well, then there's even less reason for Cullen to show up.

 

Not that I'd be terribly upset if he did. Random Cullen in DA4 and DA5.   Just... on vacation.

Regardless if he was a romance or not, I think it's unlikely Cullen would show up in any future games. I think a lot of us figured this as our last hope for Cullen to play a larger role in a game (and he is!  ) since there's probably going to be another time jump after Inquisition occurs, and Cullen would be gettin pretty old to be running around adventuring with us.

I think DAII taught me not to have too many expectations when it comes to companions in DA games.  There were companions that I expected to looooooooove and then they were completely bland for me, and some (like Aveline... where did she come from?!) that blew me away when I was expecting to be unimpressed.

 

The truth is that fans always think they know what they want, but Bioware does their own thing and they surprise us.

 

Even Cullen could turn out to be completely different than what we're expecting.

 

So I'm on the side of just "wait and see" rather than "I'll be upset if."  It's better for my mental state going into the game.     I'm ecstatic that Cullen is romanceable, but I won't even be upset about him not following us on missions (if he's like Traynor or Cortez from ME). Everything else is just icing on the DA cake!

It was a shock at first, but after a bit I realized the change made sense within the story, and so I came to enjoy both young!Anders and older!Anders. If Cullen's personality has had an alteration, I'd hope it was represented within the story just as well.

To be fair, though, there was a lot of foreshadowing with Anders. I was surprised at just how much there was when I was re-playing with Anders, Justice, and Nate in the party. 

 

Hell, he even gives disapproval if you do ANY of the Chantry Board quests. That little sh!t.

I think people exeggarate DAA's Anders transformation to DAII's Anders since to me they are quite similar.. DA2's Anders is just more serious and willing to do something about the issues.

 

But anyways, I hope there is no more tragedy for Cullen. Poor man has gone through so much already.

My main Hawke romanced Anders. And kept him alive. Bring it on. I don't mind making terrible life choices for my Inquisitors like I did for my poor Main!Hawke.

Oh true, he would be getting a bit old by then, had not considered that. Just assumed he would always be there like your favourite armchair lol....still I wont be the same without him. He better be damned good!!! Not that I am worried lol
