Race restriction confirmed

 

Yes. There is no guarantee that a particular gender/race combination will have as many romantic prospects as another.

And that's fine. Romance options are not candy to be dispensed fairly and evenly, and if there's a particular character that you've decided before the game is released that you must romance, it's advisable you play a different PC. The most we can do (and have done) is ensure that there's no overall slanting towards a particular group-- it's all over the map, for various reasons.

Edit: I think it might not be exactly confirmed, but chances are higher then before.

Edit: I'm fine with gender and race restrictions. Adds replayability. I just hope there won't be class restrictions because I really want to romance Cullen with a mage.

As for Vivienne: A certain mage? Ohhhh....Solas or Dorian?! Dorian was recently named, but Miss Kirby could be retracting his name for anticipation purposes. My money's on Solas.

To me sexuality restrictions were already enough, to push restrictions further and even made them uneven to races and gender is to me like: "you have to play character like this, you can't play the one you want to lol!" I joked about that earlier today but in reality I don't want that. I plan my characters in advance and romances are big part of that as well. This means I have to plan character around Cullen, Cass and possibly Dorian, I can't play what I like and just romance someone with them. So I'm really.. ugh little angry about this at the moment. Although many devs try to make it seems like romances are very optional and small part of BW games.. they aren't for many players.

 

Sigh this just means I can't plan my characters until I have full information about romance restrictions.

Going through the last few pages of this thread I just realized how different people play roleplaying games. Or at least how different they play Dragon Age. Never thought of that before. I, for instance, don't plan ahead. I want to play a female human mage but that's about it. Furthermore, I am interested in hooking my mage up with Cullen but when it turns out that he has changed for the worse, she might not be interested in him at all. So, I basically make it up as I go along and react to the way other characters treat me. Also, I want to go through the game world open-minded. If I plan a character ahead it all seems so fixed. This isn't criticsm, just an observation. I never even thought about planing a whole character in advance.
 
That said, I don't find gender or race restrictions all that horrible. But I feel for everyone who is disappointed if the prefered romance option isn't available.

I have tried to play this way but it doesn't work for me. I end up abandoning these characters. .I just don't feel like i can make good story with them. The more i plan the more i end up liking my characters.

I hates it It's ridiculous and impractical and just... so fantasy armor-ish. Doesn't seem very Cullen-y at all, either. I'm assuming they did it because his face isn't ready to be fully revealed, but still, why pick such a ridiculous looking helm? And I thought inquisitor's was over the top!

I'm glad someone else said it. Agree. I figure I'll be toggling helmets off anyway, but this one is a little too... Liony.

But then helmets with faces have always wigged me out.

If they do race gate, I'd imagine it would only affect 1-2 of the LIs, not all of them. Varric perhaps.

Perhaps he's half Fereldan and half Orlesian? Or maybe he's full Orlesian but left at a very young age so he doesn't have an accent?

with appropriate caveats, Cullen's CHR file in DA:O says he's Fereldan.

It's honestly strange that he wouldn't romance any other PC other than qunari. He seems to enjoy sex, and there aren't many qunari around outside Seheron and Par Vollen.

It does seem a lot fancier than I would have ever imagined him wearing. Figured he'd be more of a practical non-fancy things type of guy... of course, that's all just head canon so who knows! Maybe he was like "right, I'm finally out of the Order let's go wild and buy something ridiculous!"

That *is* creepy. I like Cullen's helml thing, though, because it 1) Doesn't just sit on his head like a damn stewpot, and 2) actually looks like part of his character's clothing design.   I am, however, going to probably have it off as often as possible to see his face, because, well, seriously.

You wouldn't play one otherwise?  So strange! There are people who want to romance him with other races / genders / classes ... the restriction thing is just so very odd to me. I don't see how anyone could be happy about it! Unless... people have different playing styles. Some people probably only play the game once or twice... or never venture outside a certain race, gender, or class. Hmm.

 

It sucks for those of us who do; my playing style is so organic; I create the character and knowing that character's personality and such, can envision who s/he would fall in love with. Creating a certain type of character just to romance another character feels very mechanical to me

I actually liked sexuality restrictions cause i think its cool from bw to make gay characters.. how ever if the split is uneven im not into that. That gives unequal opportunes and rewards/punishes of playing certain sexualities. Race restrictions only makes it more uneven. Thats how i see it anyways.

He kind of looks like Alistair when he does it (stabs me right in the heart! My final warden dumped Ali after all the heir to the throne thing was revealed).
