I don't see how anyone could be happy about it! Unless... people have different playing styles. Some people probably only play the game once or twice... or never venture outside a certain race, gender, or class. Hmm.

It sucks for those of us who do; my playing style is so organic; I create the character and knowing that character's personality and such, can envision who s/he would fall in love with. Creating a certain type of character just to romance another character feels very mechanical to me :(

I have a hard time creating characters out of thin air because of the way I set it up. If I want to make a new origins game, fine I can do that. DA2? Nope. Not unless I have a Origins game to be its "history". So with DAI, I had to get word documents to write down the history for each of my canons. The wardens history, hawkes, and then I plan out the inquisitors. Basing my characters off of romances just gives me a starting point for my characters. I've had to make up a bunch new wardens and hawkes just to fit all the inquisitors. It's weird, I know. :P

I have six word documents planning my canons :P

Methinks our playing styles are very similar

Nah, I get to explore and learn so much more about that character. :)

Yep. :) Part of the joy I get out of playing RPG's is watching my character discover who she (or he) is as the events in the game unfold. :D

I can see how this would be fun! I guess I come at it more from a writer's perspective (not that I'm a great writer, but I do write). It would be nuts to start writing a story without knowing everything about my character(s).

What kind of errors did the DA2 guide have? I used one but didn't notice any...

The one I think of off the top of my head is that it said you couldn't even flirt with anyone else to get the Seb romance, which isn't true.

This is the first time in a DA game in which I have prior knowledge before playing the game. All I know for sure is that I'll be recreating myself in-game (not sure which race), my first playthrough I'll be a Mage and that I'll be romancing Cullen because I've spent so long campaigning for him that it would feel weird not to, lol. Everything else I'll play by ear.

Going through the last few pages of this thread I just realized how different people play roleplaying games. Or at least how different they play Dragon Age. Never thought of that before. I, for instance, don't plan ahead. I want to play a female human mage but that's about it. Furthermore, I am interested in hooking my mage up with Cullen but when it turns out that he has changed for the worse, she might not be interested in him at all. So, I basically make it up as I go along and react to the way other characters treat me. Also, I want to go through the game world open-minded. If I plan a character ahead it all seems so fixed. This isn't criticsm, just an observation. I never even thought about planing a whole character in advance.

That said, I don't find gender or race restrictions all that horrible. But I feel for everyone who is disappointed if the prefered romance option isn't available.

I don't really plan my first character out in advance, nor do I necessarily refrain from making "bad" decisions. But I like to know which ones are going to come back to bite me in advance. I'll say, "I'm opening up a huge can of worms here, but I gotta do it." On one Origins playthrough, I did Annul the Circle knowing full well that it would mean killing Connor, but I did it because I wanted one save where Connor died. But mostly, I like to know which plots are gated by previous decisions. For example, you can only get Varric's last armor upgrade if you complete "Finding Nathaniel," so I would try to import saves where Nathaniel lived.

If I played like this, all my playthroughs would be the exact same, based off of my own personality. I have to create my character, then play, so I get a certain mindset of who they are and what choices they would make. :3

Oh, I write that way too (Which, I assume, is why I'm not all that amazing. haha). :D  Re: charts and lists and things-I, sadly really, live my life with lists and routines and whatnot (Go, GAD. /blergh), so flying by the seat of my pants in a game is...exhilarating and exciting. *laugh*

My very first PT I typically self-insert - though this will be the first DA game I will do this because my own OCs were more interesting. XD So my Inquisitor will be a mage, with red hair and blue eyes - and please let there be freckles. 8[ Otherwise, the only other thing I plan ahead for are the romances. DA2 I went into the Anders romance blind, which was fun, but I DO like to know who is a romance.

Usually, the decisions and romance choices are a consequence of the character's personality, but I had to create a very specific Hawke for the sole purpose of romancing Fenris. I couldn't stand having that one romance I couldn't complete, but I had a lot of trouble doing it otherwise. Reverse-engineering a Hawke enabled me to do it.

Honestly, if I knew I were going to get Cullen at least, I'd probably be totally with you guys and all in favor of restrictions. "Sure, it makes things more realistic and adds replayability, love it! I will surely enjoy experiencing all these marvelous restrictions after my first glorious Cullen romance playthrough"

It took them four patches to get "Who Needs Rescuing" working, and a lot of the approval gains/losses are inaccurate. And some content was inaccessible because it involved bugged DAO saves. That was part of the reason they decided to go with the Keep.

I can see that. I did do that for Merrill, and... that's the only romance I didn't complete! So, yeah. Very unnatural playing style for me.

So, basically, what you're saying is, "I'm all in favor of restrictions as long as they don't restrict *me*."? *grin*

Yeah, I'm just thinking I'd probably feel less depressed and more on board if I weren't in such dire circumstances lol

Also if I were really, really excited about Solas and Dorian, which I'm still not. The threat of those two being my only options weighs heavily over me. (And by "my options" I mean my first two inquisitors. I'll play a female at some point, probably third.)

I won't lie this is the first time I plan my playthroughs,at least that meticulously!

I wanted my characters this time to have a certain personality, rather than the typical overachiever type I tend to play in most RPG's,also a particular arc that the events in the game and interaction (also possibly romance) with other characters, will allow them to evolve in a certain way.

If the character I wanted to romance with that particular character isn't available then fine after all they'll still evolve after that disappointment, just maybe not in the way I wanted, some it will affect while others will just shrug it off.

So no race/gender restrictions won't really make a difference in my playthroughs,I just think that I now'll have to work on alternative scenarios of how my characters will evolve according to their personalities and the options given in the game.

Though,I feel for those that their preferred romance option isn't available as well...

Unless qunari abound where IB is situated, he's probably had his share of humans. I hope so, anyway, because I've got one character in mind who is very interested in him!
