I think it would be about the fact that announcing someone as anything other than bi is saying to some fans who'd been hoping to romance them, "Nope! Not for you." So you're still proud of the character and everything, but there's a sad part too because not everybody wins, so you just can't be as enthusiastic about it without worrying that you're rubbing it in for someone. Announcing them as gay also has that problem, but with the mitigating fact that the character in question is only for a group of people who don't usually get things only for them in mass-marked video games. (The latter is also true of straight women, of course, but...)

And there will be a reaction from fans when these announcements are made. Look what happened to the Sera thread, people were in there raging because they were so disappointed they wouldn't be able to romance her as their preferred Inquisitor, I think it was even closed at one point? They will never be able to make everyone happy. I have always played as a female protagonist and if it was released that Cullen was gay, sure I'd be a little disappointed but it would push me to make my first ever male character so I could have him as my LI :)

Here's Gaider post I was talking about:

I think it helps to have the original question to really clarify.

At the moment i just want to know if some races will be restricted to fewer (or perhaps even none, in a worst case scenario) options than others. Particuarly since gender gating is already in place.

Yeah, I think one of Cass and Cullen is either straight or otherwise gated for this reason. And while I don't think a non-announcement in the GE video will mean he's straight, I do think there's no way they'll announce it in the video unless he's bi.

Yeah, agree.

"And Cullen is only for the ladies!" Greg and Jessica stare into the camera with smug grin*

Yeah, awkward

Well, Gaider did say that some race/gender combo might have less options than others, and that's fine, the romances don't have to be distributed fair and evenly.
I'll link the post when I'll find it.

Yeah, he did say that... which is what makes me question the whole previous "We want it to be fair for everyone" thing he'd said and promoted.

I'm not totally comfortable with the idea that if the player is not accommodating the game characters' preferences, the player is the one who is responsible for abandoning what he/she wanted in favor of following the NPCs' wishes...

That takes away big part of the fun of RPGs for me.

ETA: I do understand the logic when it comes to sexual orientation, because it gives representation to those who are underrepresented. I really don't understand when it comes to fantasy races.

That's great that you're able to do that! But, one, we know Cullen isn't going to be gay, so that's actually not a genuine concern (not something hovering malevolently over you lol), and two, not everyone experiences the same flexibility in their playthroughs, whether it's how they identify with their inquisitor or have a certain OTP they're in love with or what.

Like you said, someone's always going to be disappointed. That's why I personally think all bi is the way to go, but again, having gay and lesbian romances is a massive step forward in the industry and I'm proud to be a BioWare fan because of it.

Yeah, I have a similar playing style. That's the beauty of these RPGs; they let me play the character I want. I do usually get around to play outside my comfort zone, usually by third or fourth playthrough, but if I had to START with that third or fourth playthrough? I wouldn't be too excited about the game.

jndeed. Though my point was just that romances might not be fair and even, so race restriction not being fair isn't a reason to think it won't be in.

I'm not sure if he said fair to everyone, or that people would still get options with the new system. While technically true (there will be multiple romances in the game for everyone), the race restriction might limit certain characters to one options (even, ironically, if that character is bisexual).

I'm probably going to make so many playthroughs of this game that none of the romances will matter because I'm gonna love errbody at some point. I'll probably play a dude at least once, especially if Dorian is gay. ^_^ And if Cullen isn't bi, I think I'll just cry. But I'll play whatever I have to play. And I may just do that anyways, for all the different content and dialogue each race of the inquisitor brings to the table! :)

Or none, if your single option doesn't have high enough approval for your Inquisitor. Just saying. :(

I do agree with the both of you. Bioware did say that they wanted to make the romances more realistic, and it seems that they may be going further with this than fans would like them to. Ideally, it would be nice to have all characters bi (like in DA2), then everyone gets their chance to be able to have the LI that they want as well as other NPC's that may catch their interest along the way. I would like that for everyone and have stated before that I'd want Cullen to be bi so that everyone in this thread gets to have a piece of him. Everyone here has so much passion for him and it wouldn't make me happy at all to see anyone here disappointed in not being able to have him as an LI for their preferred Inquisitor, or any other LI for that matter

For me the realism problem is that in the real world, if someone I'm interested in isn't interested in return, I have billions of other people to choose from. No single potential relationship has very high stakes because there are so many other opportunities.

In a game, there are only a handful of people your character could possibly have a romance with, so the opportunities are limited. That's not a criticism, just a fact of game design.  As a result, I don't think realism is a factor. (And to be fair, Gaider also stated outright that it's not a factor.)

I've pretty much given up hope of my canon/first/preferred Inquisitor getting to romance Cullen at this point, so I'm speaking more generally now.

Tash: Is it true that David Gaider sustains his life force by drinking the tears of heartbroken fans?

Mark: Yeah, that’s probably true, yes.

Actually I could see them revealing some sexuality stuff at GaymerX ... probably not the straight characters though

Well if they reveal all the bi and gay characters... by elimination...
