Aha! Found it! The story Varric wrote about the Templar Knight Captain and the guardsman:
Aveline: "Alright, tell me, how does it end?"
Varric: "Beg your pardon?"
Aveline: "That guard story of yours, the... the one with the guardsman who falls in love with a Templar Knight Captain."
Varric: "Oh! The romance, Swords & Shields. I just started that serial, It's got 10 chapters to go."
Aveline: "Well, yes, but you know how it ends! ... Just tell me."
Varric: "I've got an idea... But the story, the story will go where it wants to go. The characters drive it, not me."
Aveline: "You're the author, that makes no sense at all!"
Varric: "A good story you don't really write, it was always there... you just uncover it."
I wonder what that means? Varric suggests he "uncovered" something. Is he suggesting that Aveline has a crush on Cullen? Seems odd since she can be married to Donnic when you get this one. Unless it's a hint that Cullen was indeed dating someone (a guardsman) in DA2 and it ended for whatever reason, leaving him single for our Inquisitor in DAI? Hm...
I interpreted it as just how writing works. You have an idea for a story, but the characters have minds of their own and take it wherever it ends up going. I do like the idea of him dating a guardsman sometime during DA2's timeline and being single again when he meets the Inquisitor though. ![]()

I've stopped checking. Keep beta invites are like car keys and soulmates -- the minute you stop looking for them is when they show up.
Do they ever say it's the guard captain, though? Sounds like just some guardsman. (As long as it's not some dead-in-the-final-battle guardsman who will give Cullen a case of Carth Syndrome...) Given how Varric's apparently-most-famous book actually happened, I'd be disappointed in him if it turned out all his books are just fictionalizations of stuff he hears around town, though.
Yeah, I like the idea of him dating, but with minimal angst attached. It's bad enough that my Amell died killing the archdemon, but that was 10 years ago, so I hope whatever grief has faded enough that it won't be a big issue.
Hi Cullen fans. Was wondering if anyone would like to briefly describe the reasons for Cullen's popularity.
Just looking for enlightenment, because I have always been verrrrry surprised by the extent of his popularity and don't quite understand it. I played the games (as a mage, too lol) I know who he is, and read the FAQ for this thread, but I'm curious to understand what it is about him that is apparently so loveable.
I just don't see it, but when I see all of you guys I feel like I'm missing out on something lol?? Thanks in advance.
Maybe a little, lol! But I'm mainly curious, I'm trying to see if I can piece together potential scenarios surrounding his story/romance arc.
The trouble is, after two games there are SO many angles they can pick up and run with. I think it's part of why I find him so intriguing as a character, there are so many ways he can be portrayed, so many things he has seen, been part of, and overcome. Ohhh the excitement ![]()

Welcome to the thread!
I certainly can't speak for all of us, but for me it has a lot to do with his growth as a character over the games, and the potential directions they can take him in. Not only have we never had the viewpoint of an experienced Templar, but we also have an outside view into the events of both DAO and DA2. He's seen a lot of the worst of both sides in this conflict, and come out with a lot of valuable experience. He came across to me as a very genuine, very dedicated character, and I'm interested in which of the myriad of events he has been part of they will use to mould him as he continues his story ![]()

I got into him during DA2, I wasn't so intrested with him in DAO since I didn't first play any mages. So he was templar in pink cage I felt sorry for in the DAO for me. I got slowly into Cullen in DA2 too, it wasn't love in first sight but his character is grow to me. I like how he has had character deveploment during games, it makes him intresting. I generally like templars, it's just hard to find good one's and Cullen is one of best templar characters in DA so that's it for me as well. I also like his personality, how he's pretty rational, sometimes passionate but still discuss about things although he disagree's with my Hawke. I felt like he was my Hawke's friend in the end of game so that was one aspect of me as well.
I'm pretty sure everyone has their different views and how they got into Cullen though ^^
Then what has kept me into liking Cullen and even liking more is his fans on tumblr and here. There is pretty great fanart and character analyzes about him around ![]()
Well hello, Mr. Fosse Man!
I don't see him pulling me away from Cullen, but he sure is pretty!
I actually think he's better looking than Cullen *hides in the corner*
Cullen still wins cause he's awesome~!

Well Hello there all you lovely people! New faces and lurkers included
It's been a while - life happened. Thankfully. I have no idea what I'm going to do in this next few weeks of post E3 dry spell...![]()
So I had some free time... while still eagerly anticipating the new Cullen themed deliciousness... and while being under the influence i started creating some silly doodles, which turned into my very first attempt at drawing a (very fine) topless male specimen such as our dear templar. And since I've completely missed out on the 1000th page celebration page, I'll just post this one now. Better late than never, right?
Oh and just a short disclaimer - I'm a total amateur in regards to drawing. I started creating this things a year or so prior and I don't really practice that often, so please forgive the imperfections.
Since it's a pretty large pic, I've decided to post it under spoiler tag, so it's nothing truly spoilerific.

PS: I totally love the amount of historical geekiness and nerdiness going on around here.![]()
How can you tell? We haven't seen either of them properly yet beyond blurred photos, lol.
True. However Dorian has the stache, Cullen doesn't.

He caught my eye back in Origins, when he responded so defensively to what he perceived as a threat. The fact he'd survived continued torture was compelling. I've seen and worked with soldiers recovering from PTSD; it's a terrible travail. It saddened me, how Cullen reminded me of those guys when we met him during the broken Circle.
And then he showed up in DA2. He was stronger, more seasoned. You could tell he'd healed but never forgot. You could tell he had real scars but he was determined and bold and thoughtful, in ways you hadn't seen during the Circle events. It made me think, how much he'd grown and been shaped by his experiences. It made him interesting, in ways only a few of the characters were. I wanted to get to know him better.
But he completely wow'ed me during the final scenes in DA2, hands down. He makes strong, bold assertions, defying Meredith directly to support my Hawke. He doesn't back down, to the point he picks up a blade to fight alongside my girl. And when it was all said and done, he nodded and knelt in respect to her, too. To me, it said a great deal -- this was a man of conviction, of forthright courage, of real and pronounced character. And I wanted to know him even more.
I was glad when he was announced as a main character in Inquisition, because I'll finally get the chance I've been waiting for since Origins. To me, Cullen is fascinating. He's not a stale character who's remained unchanging through numerous scenes and experiences. He's dynamic, willing to think past the immediate black and white answer, to challenge even those in authority if it means defending what he believes to be right. He's downright INTERESTING and I still want to get to know him better.
October can't come soon enough, imo.
http://forum.bioware...nd-3/?bioware=1Can you post up the link so that I can source the info?

I like Cullen because he's so very human. And he's got rotten luck, truly. I'm fascinated by the one-time shy templar who was tortured, who went to Kirkwall and overcame his fear and hatred of mages at the end, and who now is an important part of the Inquisition.
His story is interesting, his development feels realistic, and he's awkward. Does it hurt he's pretty good looking? Nope, but that's not why I'm here. ![]()
