I know, cher bebe! And my first quizzy is gonna be kind of a dick; I wanna make a quizzy who will huggle him and let him know he's loved lol

I really don't see similarities between Cass and Cullen; they have very different personalities. She seems very intense and tight-lipped, whereas he's more easy-going, certainly very professional, but he's also fond of a chat. A little awkward and stiff perhaps, but he's a good guy, friendly. Cass seems like she'd be sitting alone at a bar with a frown on her face while her friends were all out dancing or drinking.

I guess that's one thing; in DA2 we saw him mostly in his professional capacity, and even then he made a little time for conversation, and in the Mage Origin he was pretty informal for a Templar regardless of whether he had a crush on you. Still pretty terse- and intense-seeming compared to a lot of characters, though.

For some reason the website is flipping out when I try to copy and paste the parts I'm talking about, but the bits in the DG interview where he talks about her conflicting loyalties, learning to see moral shades of grey, and desire to protect the innocent are what I was mainly thinking of. And of course being a romantic at heart, although that's at least partially fanon in Cullen's case, I guess. :P

I see what you mean about the shades of grey. But I think a lot of the characters a like that... it's just part of a character's growth. Look at IB and his dedication to the Qun on one hand, but his desire to assist the Inquisition just to help people on the other. A good character doesn't necessarily see everything in black and white; that's where conflict comes into play and makes life difficult for the character... and hence interesting :P

I'm actually going to have to give up and go to sleep now :( I've been reading about six different discussions and they're all super interesting, including this thread :)

Before I head off, I want to say I do think the devs must have at least some liking for Cullen since (possibly Gaider) said that the decision to bring him back wasn't fan based, but something they wanted to do because they found him really interesting as a character :) I wsh I was better at remembering sources for things

This is one of them (there's also several forum posts where DG says similar things about Cullen's arc, as well as what you mentioned about fanservice not being the reason for his return): http://swooping-is-b...om/1286233.html And agreed, wasn't saying they dislike him, just that the writers seem not to be as in love with him as IB et al. (which, a: is fine, because it's their characters! they're allowed to have favorites just like us. b: may change when he's been formally announced and they're allowed to talk more about him, and c: does  not seem to be true of many non-writer devs, or all of the writers)

I wonder if they'll tweet much about Cullen when they reveal him properly? I've always got the impression that he's not a favourite, lol.

I kind of think they are holding off on him because they know so many of us are wanting to know more, and they are being mean!

Thanks for all the responses to my question! Lol I remembered I once googled "Why is Cullen popular" and I didn't find anything very clear at the time so it's nice to see people who really care about him just write out their personal experiences about it.

One of the awesome things about Bioware is that they have a knack for paying attention to popular/interesting secondary characters and making them incredibly awesome in succeeding games (i.e. Isabela, Garrus) so I'm pretty excited how Cullen will turn out.

Ohhh no, I didn't mean it like that! I mean I LITERALLY forget about him! But he was my favorite character in Asunder, and I really can't wait to have him on the team! Although I do worry about him :(

Well I did forget about him too, but just because I've decided his fate already.  ^_^

It doesn't help that there has been absolutely nothing released about him yet.

Did you watch MD's interview?

Think we can lure this Liz to our thread?

Agreed (I mean, I don't think they dislike him or anything, just that most of the writers who tweet unprotectedly don't seem as amped about him as other characters, and of course he does seem to be a favorite among some of the non-writers). I'm curious to see whether I still have that impression when they can talk more about him. After that Cassandra reveal I'm a little worried about how they're going to differentiate the two of them, personality/motivation-wise, which I feel a little guilty about since I remember that being a refrain of the anti-Cullen types when I was lurking here.

Cassandra's interview with Varric changed her perspective, so it's possible that Cullen's endgame experience changed his perspective, too. They may once have been very similar in terms of personality and motivation (motivation, I see, but I don't think their personalities are all that similar), but that was before. I don't imagine Cullen would ever lose his faith, but I could see him losing his faith in the Order.

Definitely this. Although I fear we might be headcanoning here... but I see his faith as being very steadfast.

I mean, Cullen's crisis of faith isn't "I don't know if the Maker exists" or "I don't know I believe in the Maker anymore"; it's more akin to "I don't know if what we're doing is what the Maker truly wants."

Indeed.
On another topic, it was confirmed in multiple sites (quoting Darrah) that DAI Will have 10 huge open world areas. Assuming that the thee Dales areas aren't in the same one (I don't see it happening, though Halamshiral is likely in one of them or not added i the 10 counts since it's quite smaller then The others), we have 5 areas confirmed (Western Approach and the Hinterlands). In the PAX demo the saves had Crestwood Hills, Frostback Pass, Nahashin Marches and Southern Desolation. This might've changed, but It's still an idea of the areas available in DAI.

Tried to talk to my mom about DAI tonight this is what i got

Mom: "You and your games. You are so weird"

Me: "But mom I had to pre-order it. It comes out in 4 months!"

Mom: "Why would you wait that long for something. I would never order something that far in advance"

Me: (whinny voice) "If i don't order now then i cant get the collectors edition and i miss out on all the new weapons, armor and mounts and this character Cullen"

Mom: "This is why you are weird"

So I've been thinking about the recently described "race restrictions" per the romances in DAI.  A friend of mine was arguing, that that could leave us restricted to Cullen with only a human Qwizzy.  But I disagreed, reminding her that he was just as enchanted with a Surana as he was an Amell in Origins.

Which left us arguing about which one of the characters might have "race restrictions" and she started naming them like it was a list -- "Dorian with humans only but Sera with elves and..."  I finally held up a hand and said:

"I think it'll be more about your own PC, rather.  Even DG said you would need to pick your Qwizzy with some care, because one character may have restrictions that another doesn't.  So some romance arcs may not even open .. so no <flirt> choice that shows during convo with that companion .. depending on your character.  That means it's not necessarily your companion you have to worry about.  If you want to romance whoever, then create a Qwizzy your companion will be attracted to."

Personally, I think the entire issue of "race" in the game makes for some chance at even more romance arcs.  Because some companion characters may suddenly become romance-able, if only your PC is that particular race the companion character "likes".  I kinda like that idea, actually.  Maybe I'll make a dwarf Qwizzy if Varic only swings with dwarf girls, lol.

Still planning on going in there with an Elven Qwizzy for Cullen to adore, fingers crossed.

You should've heard the conversation I had with my mother when I started moving my screen pictures to my Facebook account.  Just to give my hard drive some additional space, mind you.  So she calls me up on the phone, I kid you not.  And this was our conversation:

Mom: "Who are these people who's pictures you're putting on FB?"
Me:  "What?  They're characters in a game, mom."
Mom: "Oh, really?  I thought they were real."

Me:  "Where in the name of God would I have met real people wearing real armor and swinging real swords at real dragons?  Please tell me, because I want to go there."

Mom:  "Well ... is this game anything like your Star Wars fascination?"

Me: "OMG, is there a Millenium Falcon in this real place, too?!"

Mom:  "There's no reason to laugh at me ... stop laughing!"

Reg: MOM THE DAI TRAILER IS OUT LET’S WATCH IT
Mom: I can’t believe how beautiful this is.
Reg: Right?!
Grandma: What are you two watching?
Reg: Video game trailer.
Mom: Is that a qunari?
Reg: Probably.
Grandma: [with so much disdain it’s palpable] You enjoy these things?
Mom: I’m going to convince the horned guy to sleep with me.

I had one of these moments today! I was wearing my "Winterhold College of Arcane Arts" t-shirt. "What is that? I've never heard of that college," said my mom. "It's from a video game," I said. "Oh," she said.  *gives me her "You're so weird" smile*

And this reminds me of ANOTHER moment with my mom, when I was playing DA2 and I wanted to show her Fenris:

Me: Look, Mom! This is Fenris; he's my boyfriend. *makes Hawke run circles around him*

Mom: *peers at screen* That's nice. You could get a real boyfriend though.

OH BURN, MOM, BURN.

It does make me think whether or not Varric would be romance-able if you're a dwarven quizzy. But I'm not sure if I'd really want to go there. Yeah I'm curious as to what a romance with him would be like, but on the other hand, Varric is family man. I'd feel like I would be trying to get it on with my cousin  :P
