They haven't confirmed Iron Bull as a bisexual LI have they? I keep seeing people say that the devs confirmed it, but I think they've got their facts wrong.

There was an online article that decided to take the information on the DA website and tell everyone it was a confirmation. The joys of shoddy journalism

I'll test all the romances out, but Cullen will be the romance I take in my first playthrough... he will also likely be my canon romance for my ultimate playthrough to be imported, unless for some reason it's awful or (Maker forbid) I take a huge liking to one of the other LI's in the way that I did with Alistair. Ideally, I want Cullen to be the one that I take an instant liking to, but I can't be sure until I play.

Oh, Alistair. Gods. I'm almost half *afraid* the Cullen romance will do that to me. I cannot *not* romance him when I play Origins. It's weird. I'm all "No. Gonna romance Leliana, dammit." And then, in Ostagar, "I..have a message for you, Ser Mage..." and it's over. Ridiculous. :P

Same here! Every. Single. Time! And in DA2 in Fenris, I just can't bear to leave that elf alone and lonely in his mansion feeling as though the whole world is against him  no doubt there will be someone in DAI who does this to me too, which is why I -must- go for Cullen first, just in case it turns out to be someone unexpected

DAO : Alistair, Zev, then single (cullen modded playthrough)
DA2 : Fenris, Anders, then single (seb romance, which is about the same:))
No, my Wardens and Hawkes never fall in love with the "one and only guy"...

I posted on the romance thread yesterday, I think, and I definitely felt in the minority because I wasn't complaining about the race/gender restrictions.  So many were like "if EVERYONE can't romance character so-and-so than why have him/her as a romance at all??!!!!111

It's like, if I can't have them NO ONE can!  Really?  First off, creepy, and second, you realize that way, no one wins, right?  I mean, I'd love to be able to romance Cullen as a reformist mage or Dorain as a female character (I seriously HATED the magic mustachio at first, but his character is starting to grow on me as we learn more about him) but if I can't I'll just create different play throughs for them.  No biggie, it's not like I play any game just once.

Aaanyway. at this point I'm more interested in actually learning about the characters at all.  So many we know nearly nothing about.  And it'd definitely be nice to know in advance what's what as far as who's available for who romantically.  Because while i prefer my story to be as spoiler-free and full of surprises as possible, I don't want to pursue someone through hours of gameplay only to find out they're not into humans or whatever,  but now I can't romance that other dude either because that dialogue happened ten hours ago and so-and-so won't get with anyone who at any point flirted with anyone else (my one attempt to romance Fenris didn't go so well ).  I'm a sucker for a good love story, and to have my Inquisitor forever alone would be a bit depressing.   i mean, demon covered apocalypse I can handle.  Being single? LAME  :P

Haha! Sounds like me, exactly.  i managed to romance Zev once, and it was really well done, but every other playthrough, even ones where I'm determined to just be friends, he pulls out that stupid rose and I'm like ehehehe... okay

In DA2 it was Anders.  Tried to go for Fenris once but apparently the fact that I flirted with I think Aveline (just because she's fun to pick on) meant I was off limits or something.  And then he goes and hooks up with Isabela of all people instead.  Not cool, dude.

But then again neither were really my type to begin with.  But in Inquisition the charcaters so far sound really compelling and interesting so I'm hoping i'll want someone besides Cullen.  But Cullen is first.  Because, like, YEARS.

LOL, I had the exact same problem! The only way I could romance the others was by playing a male Warden.

I desperately want Cullen to have the same effect on me as Alistair did, Maker knows I've been campaigning for his inclusion and romance for long enough! I'm still a little disappointed that he won't be a companion, but him being an important npc within the Inquisition does have it's merits, especially now that they've made it clear that he does have his own quests and will go out into the field with us, even if it might only be briefly or in cutscenes like what we saw in the trailer/demo with Leliana.

While I'm aware that no companion will ever again have the amount of plot heavy content that Alistair did in DA:O (DG felt that it took too much focus away from the protagonist), I'd like to believe that whatever content Cullen does have will at least put him a close second on my ultimate romance list.

Tell me about it, I have played oh god no end of DAO play throughs and almost every one is Alistair romanced, because he was my first and I always feel like I'd be cheating on him...he gives me that 'but its supposed to be me and you look' and I am gone. I actually managed a Zev romance once, but I had to create a save just so I could dump him and pick Alistair, and I would go back to that save often just to get my Alistair fix. Alistair makes me weak, and I know Cullen is going to do the same.

The Plan (capital P intentional) is to romance all of the available LI's, and work my way through them like the menu in an exclusive, dragon-slaying restaurant.

The Reality? Whichever one is nicest will make me feel too guilty to try anyone else. I'm looking at you, Garrus Vakarian

Romance "issues" always raise intense discussions, agressivity sometimes, even from the very persons who argue "c'mon do as I please, it's just a game!".

Well, if it's "just a game", why the angriness ? why the frustration ? it's just a game !

Anyway, I prefer to avoid debatting romances. All I wanna know is if the 1st inquisitor I plan to create will go along with Cullen. I like surprises but I would be veeeerrry disappointed to learn that romancing him is impossible after 20hours of game. :D

Yeah, people can get pretty heated when they are denied their waifu.

Personally, I think that the race-gating can be a positive thing. Considering that over 80% of the player base play as a human male, I think it could encourage some to be a little more adventurous, picking different races and/or genders. It also (imo) encourages multiple playthroughs.

It definitely encourages people to role-play and break out of the normal characters they'd usually role.

That being said, I intend to play as either a female Elf or Human for my first go because those are the only two races that I'd be able to make a character that looks enough like me for my self-insert, so perhaps a small part of me is more relaxed by the race gating system because I know I stand a higher chance of romancing my chosen LI than people wanting to romance Cullen with m/m, or wanting to romance a character who's preferences have yet to be announced, since we already know that Cullen had a crush on both the female human Amell and female Elven Surana... of course, that's not to say that he'd still be interested in romancing those two races, but the odds are good. The only thing that could locked me out of his romance is that I plan to role a mage class first, but it's a chance I'm willing to take because if he will romance a mage then I'll have successfully accomplished my wish fulfillment, lol.

Hmm, i I haven't heard anything about class/choice-gating as yet, so I think your chances of romancing Cullen as a mage are still pretty good. Although choice-gating is something that does sound interesting to me, and is something i'd like to see more of tbh.

As for me, I can't wait to try out every race/gender/sexuality combination. Unlike most i'm actually going to try and refrain from looking at anything romance related on these boards as we get closer to the game's release. I'm just going to create my first character and dive straight in, head first. I'm the kind of player that likes to find these things out organically as I play through the game. I just can't wait to get stuck in.

Yeah.

Admittedly I'm relaxed over the entire thing because I don't have a set idea for my first playthrough yet and I have Inquisitor ideas for days, so I will eventually see every romance and can choose my favourite from there. What we find out about the romances/characters when they're ready to reveal more, though, is probably what will push me to decide which Inquisitor I choose first, but... if not that, I'll decide once I see the CC.

And waffle over it until then.

Right now I'm considering a female dwarven rogue because that was my first ever playthrough of Origins and it could be fun to return to that for my first playthrough of Inquisition. I'm definitely interested in a mage and female qunari, though! And I have a male rogue character that I want to use too...!

Decisions, decisions~

Hmm this true, however most likely straight human male will have most romance options ^^; So it has been at least in Mass Effect. Race restrictions make sense character-wise, not all people in Thedas are into every race. However I hope they won't limit too much certain races.. which are most likely dwarves and qunari since those are likely hardest to animate in cinematic scenes and make most sense lore-wise to be limited : /

I can totally understand the frustration. I mean, I know I laugh and joke about people throwing tantrums, but you should've seen me with those original ME3 endings... my gawd, if that wasn't a blatant display of self entitled gamer then I dunno what was! Granted, it was an over reaction due to circumstances in my life at the time, I'd played ME3 to make me feel better only to end up feeling worse, lol. But whatever, it's ancient history.

I do feel for people that get their hopes up to romance a certain character only to have them dashed though, especially if they'd been waiting months/years to get hold of this guy/girl and had this great head canon and protagonist all planned out ready, only to discover that he/she won't be interested, lol. Hell, Cullen is a great example of this, how gutted would we have been if he hadn't made it into the game in a big way, or if he hadn't been romanceable? I know I wouldn't have been a happy bunny... in fact, when I joined the Cullen thread I distinctly recall saying that if he wasn't then I'd "give up on BioWare games altogether" LOL! ... I like to think I've grown up a lot since then, but my point is that I know how they're feeling and I do sympathise.

What I don't agree with, however, is them being rude to the devs/writers just because they chose to write a character/situation in a certain way that doesn't fulfill what that person wanted, and while I'd be a little sad if Cullen was a male only romance (because I wouldn't be able to romance him with my me!Inquisitor LOL) I'd respect and appreciate that they'd taken the time to develop his character and personality enough to actually give him different preferences, not just surrounding gender/race/class but also the other aspects of his personality that we'll get to explore and experience. I'd just make a really hot male Inquisitor and swoon a lot during the m/m romance scene, LOL!

Yeah, so did I. I prefer it to going in already knowing who you're going to create and how you're going to play them. Even if I have an idea in my mind beforehand, the character creator usually defenestrates that and I end up making someone totally different.

My characters even shock me sometimes lol!

The class-gate was just an example of what may happen within my first playthrough, if Cullen refuses to romance a mage. It's probably unlikely given the other restrictions, but you never know.

I prefer to play organically too. I'm in a tricky situation where I have to follow all the news for my videos, which means sometimes I find out more about the story than I wanted too, case in point that demo where the devs explained the plot and situation surrounding Leliana's capture etc.

At the very least, I'm expecting dwarves and qunari will be able to romance the human characters (as well as Varric and Iron Bull possibly? Heaven knows). Mostly because I can't see them giving a gender/race/sexuality combination absolutely ZERO options, and I don't see any female qunari or dwarves in our line up.

I hope so. It would make sense to take some humans from them though. For example Dorian is from Tevinter and Tevinter has been in war with qunari ages.. he might not like qunaris because of this. He has probaply heard lot of war propaganda how monstrous beings qunari are and how they can't be seen as "humans" ^^; Then Cullen has had bad experience with qunaris too so lore-wise it would make sense to have these two limited from qunaris. There might be something like: Iron Bull and Cass for qunari players, Varric and Cass for dwarf players as options. But it's hard to know at this point, I just hope they keep race-gating as minium as they can.

Well one of the devs said each combination will definitely have at least one option, so I'd expect so :)
