Horses have really good ears. Mine can hear the latch click on a gate when they are 150 metres away and look up. So lets assume the horse has been trained to follow at a distance until you need it. Horses can identify very closely with their owner so it wouldn't just wander off.

Is anybody turned off by the "whistle and your mount appears" thing? Like, what's your horse doing while you're traveling? Just trotting alongside you? I don't think I'll use a horse if that's the case, and especially if my companions can't follow. Now it might make sense for a Dalish to whistle for his/her halla because they're kind of like the Starks and their direwolves lol it's not a normal animal.
Personally I prefer it. You have no idea how often I lost my bloody horse in the Elder Scroll games. It got to the point that I just stopped bothering and ran everywhere. And as someone who owns horses, they can come at the sound of a whistle or call even when they're at the very other end of the paddock. ![]()

They had that in Red Dead Redemption. It's not all that bad. It's actually quite useful, especially if you go off exploring and suddenly you realize you are in the middle of nowhere without a horse.

i'm willing to hand wave the summon mount thing. i'm just wondering how we get companions back once we hit a town. do they just appear? to we have to gather them again?
i really want to be able to walk around and explore towns and country With my companions. Even lil villages. cuz i like that.

The devs hinted at a large lizard mount. Wyverns seem the most likely bet.Eeeep!
I'll have to try this if it's an option.
...And I read that 'Adorable!' in the voice of that mage in Origin teaching the precocious brats.
"I remember when you were this age. Adorable!"
On the horse whistling, I'm more concerned on the companions disappearing. That would limit the times I use mounts.

My theory is that they'll say something like "we'll catch up with you in a bit" or something, and continue walking, then once we're far enough away not to notice they'll disappear and spawn a little further back in the location we headed to after we get off the horse, so when we turn around we'll see them running up behind us.

Yeah, that's the only thing that would limit my use of a mount. I would hate to miss a banter just because I'm trotting around on my horse or deer.

This was actually the way that I was hoping it would be done, since I prefer it to the usual "press a button and suddenly you're on a mount" that I'm used to from MMOs, heh. I'd still like to know more about how your companions follow you while you're on a mount, though.
And so I'm at least a little on topic, have a random Cullen!

The major problem, I guess, would be when a fight interrupts the travelling. But without knowing the specifics I'm willing to wait and see.

Oh yeah, I know horses have good hearing
Hmm that's true about the damn Skyrim horses lol I so wanted to just whistle and have them return from wherever they trotted off to (although running away from battle is far better than them trying to ENGAGE in battle... stupid horses). Okay, I'll just pretend my quizzy has an amazing report with his mount and can whistle it to his side when needed lol It better come trotting up and not appear in a puff of smoke!

I think Mark Darrah said that fights don't happen when you're on a horse... but I might have imagined that, lol.

I hate how we can't see Vivienne jump. I hope it's proper graceful and has her sort of float down.

I heard something like horses are only meant to travel across areas you've already been through. So... no enemies? Only wild life maybe? Only areas where you have soldiers patrolling? Definitely no horse combat.

Maybe when you are on a mount you have to go into a single mode? Like in KotOR when you want to use stealth, your companions stay put and, when you re-enter regular mode they spawn next to you. I doubt I will be using the mount too much if that is the case. I really like the companion banter, and would hate to miss it just because I didn't want to spend the extra 2 minutes of game time.

Didn't know that. It seems a bit strange, but it could work.I think Mark Darrah said that fights don't happen when you're on a horse... but I might have imagined that, lol.
It'd be a way to let players return to the keeps safely in the case they're at low health, I guess.
