Hey, I thought of something today.
Let's assume Cullen wants to restore the Circle (because we know he does/says something that will make us either love him or hate him, and Circle is one of those divisive things). He probably wants it reformed, because he saw that it doesn't work the way it should. Now imagine that the Inquisitor is a mage, and Cullen falls in love with her/him. The was no place for such relationship in the Circle system before! So maybe Cullen's relationship with mage!Quisitor will make him consider pushing the reforms even further than he originally intended? Like, to allow mages and templars to have families, even with each other. What if Cullen's love for mage!Quisitor will make him fight for that? It may actually change the outcome of the game! Or at least of some quests.
It may change the way Cullen thinks about how the world should be!
If Cullen did support a reformed circle system where mages could learn and be protected but still have their families, he and my Inquisitor would be on exactly the same page about it.
I hope not, but i keep remembering Gaider saying something about how Cullen fans won't like the direction they're taking him, and I get all nervous. i mean, it's Gaider, so it's not exactly reliable, but still...
I tried to finish that playthrough with Alistair where he dumped me for just considering keeping Loghain alive (a possible bug, still not sure...) but i couldn't do it. I ended up re-loading to fix it. Difficult romances are fun, but impossible doomed-from-the-start ones - not so much.
There was context for what Gaider said, unless I'm thinking of a different quote. He has also said there is angst in Cullen's future, but I think that's pretty safe to say for every DA character.
What he said about Cullen fans not liking the direction is I think because he felt that Cullen fans had strong headcanons about him. I think Gaider is overestimating how attached we are to our headcanons, for the record - we speculate because we like the character and we enjoy talking about him, but I don't think most of us will be mad if they take him in an awesome but unexpected direction.
Anyway, I thought he was saying was he was afraid that Cullen's fans wouldn't like any direction they took him in because it wouldn't be exactly how we imagined, not that there was something specific the writers were doing that we wouldn't like.
I love the idea of romancing Cullen with a mage because I KNOW there will be friction there. I want it to be a major stumbling block, but one we can overcome.
Me too. I assume Cullen would have issues with romancing a mage (or an Inquisitor at all, given what being the Inquisitor means.) But if they allow a certain class/race/whatever to initiate a romance with Cullen at all, I hope there's some possibility of a good ending.
I really, really dislike unavoidable bad endings in games. The difference between a game and a novel or a movie is the player's ability to directly affect the story with our choices. When that is taken away, I feel like the engagement potential of the medium is lost.
I don't love unavoidable happy endings, either, for the same reason. The possibility of a fail state adds stakes to the player's decisions and makes our input more important, which to me is a good thing. If for some reason there has to be a single standard ending to a story path, though, I prefer a positive one over a negative one because I feel like it actually mattered somewhat that I was there.
I think there should be the possibility of Cullen ending the romance. You shouldn't be able to mistreat him or make decisions that violate his morals and keep him around. I just don't want it to be inevitable, I want it to based on the player's choices.
I don't think we'll EVER see that in-game, but it makes for fun thought-food. What would Cullen be like as the father of one or more mages?
I actually think he'd be a bit like Malcolm Hawke - loving to his children, but impressing strongly upon them the dangers of magic and demons, and that they have to be more careful than other people in order to keep themselves and others safe.
Whether or not Cullen can fall in love with a mage Inquisitor, I can't see him ever not loving his child, even if that child happened to be born a mage.
If he does end up in a romance with my particular Inquisitor, he'll get to be a dad to her kids.
