Hmmm, it makes me wonder. It took them nearly 3 years to track down Varric to get his end of the story, so where the hell was Cullen? The Circles had all rebelled by the time Varric had been interrogated...so perhaps Cullen is on the run then. Well, Mike Laidlaw talked about a multi-region, Cullen focused story arc, so maybe we have to hunt down the former Knight Captain.

But... that doesn't make sense unless the Inquisition goes without a military specialist for awhile. [TAPS CHIN] Like, that would have to be one of the first missions we do as the Inquisitor. Or Cullen is actually a companion and we've gotten it terribly wrong. Which is so unlikely that I am not even going to contemplate it.

It really makes me wonder if Cullen truly did abandon the Chantry, and is trying to form his own sect of Templars to what he thinks is the Order's ideal. Hmm.

Maybe that whole thing really messed with his head and he just disappeared for a while to get his head straight? Done some soul searching, etc?

Yeah his trip to Rivain was totally life changing for him. Those guys were like so at one with nature, and so happy even though they had nothing. His eyes have been like totally opened, and he blogged about all his experiences from his iPhone. Totally.

I like this idea. He'd need to come to terms with Meredith betraying his ideals, since she seemed to be someone he genuinely admired.

It would also explain how he was able to make the transition to being our military adviser/specialist, since that role would mean he'd need to at least on some level be able to put aside his own agendas. (Since someone with a strong personal motivation to favor one set of options wouldn't be much use to an Inquisitor going with a different set.) Maybe doing some soul-searching helped him realize that taking the middle road is the best option.

Yeah, man. Vlogged all about it 'n' everything. The experience changed him and took him to a higher plane of consciousness!

I think it might actually make sense for the military part to be the last piece to fall into place, given the whole Plan B thing. Yes, they'd eventually need military support, but making preparations to field a standing army isn't exactly subtle. Likely the other pillars would be in place first.

For 3 years, though? And in such a way so that even the Divine couldn't track him down? That'd be hard to pull off.

Stranger things have happened!

Yeah, maybe he already had his little faction when the Divine picked him up?

True. It's just that he'd have to do some serious stuff to shake off the Divine's agents lol

And I suppose Cassandra could act as one for a little while, since she seems to have a small platoon of people following her through Kirkwall. Hmm. I dunno.

I wouldn't necessarily expect the Divine to be actively looking for him the entire time, though. Maybe he just resurfaced at a convenient moment, or he found out about the Inquisition somehow and decided to volunteer his services.

Yeah, I would imagine Cullen being recruited later, after answering some awkward questions for his own Order about why he helped kill his boss and let a dangerous apostate mage go free. ;)

I think he teaches this and answered the question.

Spoiler

Assuming the Templar Order is willing to blame one of their own, rather than grabbing at the convenient "the mages did it" excuse. ;)

So the symbol on Cass's armor at the end of DA2 is actually the Inquisition? I thought it was for the seekers. Oh well.

Varric and Cass don't get along? I thought they'd be buddies now because of their shared admiration of Hawke.

I sense some great banter between them.

I was assuming there was a deep mutual respect, despite their disagreements, (honestly, Kirby's phrasing of why they don't get alomg seems really petty on Varric's side). I would have thought IB was a bigger problem for Varric, judging from the IB interview. Perhaps the Varric/Cassandra relationship I had believed in will be the Cassandra/Sera relationship. But...then again, that's probably just me being hopeful since I've realised I ship Cassera.

I had a feeling that Varric was going to be a changed man, so to speak.  I also have harbored an idea that perhaps Varric finds himself in the company of Cassandra, and subsequently later the Inquisitor, not by choice.

This part of the interview got my attention:

"[MK]: I got to write my favorite scene of the entire Dragon Age series this time. It may involve a game of Wicked Grace. I won't spoil it."

Maybe we can play it ingame  :)! That would be so cool!

Edit: do you think Cullen knows how to play wicked grace?Or is he like Anders?

I like how it says: "+Bianca". I'm starting to get a definite Minsc and Boo vibe here.

In my opinion, yes, Cullen probably knows how to play Wicked Grace. You gotta pass those long boring hours of watch some how!  ;)

Yeah, it seems like a very likely templar time-filler.

I can imagine people sitting down to play assuming Cullen as a "chantry boy" won't know what he's doing, and he in fact mops the floor with everyone. ;)

Yeah on the surface I'd say Cullen probably isn't much of a gambler, but it could be one of those amusing things they do to surprise the reader/player about a character.
