He didn't necessarily say that Cass does more research for the first time after the explosion, tho. It says she uses a loophole that they'd already planned upon. Perhaps  by "fledgling Inquisition," that just means "Justinia's secret stuff club" and part of their club shenanigans has been making a plan for a real Inquisition? I could see Justinia already being concerned about stuff, since she seems to have plans within plans, but maybe it's her death that triggers the "real" Inquisition.

Actually Cameron said that Justinia and Cass were considering the Inquisition as 'plan B', so they definitely started researching/put things in motion.

yeah, that's what I thought. That it was Justinia's Plan B, not just Cassandra's.

Re: Cullen post-Meredith.

Meanwhile Meredith's statue influenced the minds of the templars in the Gallows, and they all went crazy eventually. They stopped going into the city, and boats with food and goods merchants would send stopped coming back. People assumed the Gallows is now cursed and haunted by the ghosts of innocent little mages. When Cassandra arrived to investigate, the Gallows was empty, and the lyrium statue of Meredith was gone as well. Some fishermen whispered about red boats leaving Kirkwall at night a couple of weeks ago... But Cassandra failed to find more.

I just had an awful image of the Kirkwall Templars who didn't agree with Cullen's decision to go against Meredith.... snapping off pieces of her stone mummy as some grotesque symbol or memento and wearing it on a necklace. Being imbued with red lyrium, it drives them batty too. And that's why the Meredith statue disappears.

Also: Cullen being mentally unstable would just fit right in with my track record with men.

Ditto to both of you, it makes sense to initiate the plan B before it is put in motion, when plan A still has a chance of success. Still, I love how lots of puzzles start to fall into place and I truly admire Justinia for her decisions. The more I learn about her the more I regret that she has to die for our character to shine.

Trying to catch up with the thread... only 800 pages behind

The funny thing about red lyrium is that you don't even need to eat it or to touch it to go crazy. I imagine it would be enough for that statue just to remain in the Gallows like that for a couple of weeks. But Cullen doesn't know anything about red lyrium, so he has no idea it may be that dangerous. He just saw that Meredith had a crazy demonic sword, and she said it was pure lyrium, then she did some creepy demonic magic (because she probably got possessed, like Wilmod), and then she died and petrified. And now she's probably harmless (that's what he may assume, lol). Oh crap, if turns out that Cullen ordered to bury her somewhere in the basement, and she influenced the minds of the templars and remaining mages from there, Cullen will totally blame himself for the Red Templars. Angst detected!

You'd think if Hawke became Viscount, they'd have had the foresight and common sense to have the red lyrium Meredith immediately removed. Then again, how would one go about doing that? You surely can't trust a few people to pick it up and take it to the Wounded Coast or something lest they go all Gollum over it. Even just leaving it in a cave is asking for some weirdo to stumble across it and start going cuckoo for lyrium puffs.

It's like a mind-altering nuclear waste  they'd need some kind of lyrium-repellent cage of some sort, or some kind of anti-lyrium chemical to neutralise it. Of course, with the demand for lyrium being so high, I highly doubt that anything anti-lyrium exists :(

I'd been playing on the idea of perhaps crafting a spell or perhaps an artifact/invention (looking at you, Dagna) that might be able to limit the influence of red lyrium, or at least waylay its ability to corrupt temporarily.

Well, Kinloch Hold had a vault for potentially dangerous magical items. Maybe there's one in the Gallows? And they moved it there? And it took control of all dangerous magical items... OMG!

The more I think about, the more it looks like the Gallows residents were doomed. I wonder if that's why Viscount!Hawke disappeared?

Cullen: Viscount, we need to talk!

Hawke: Spit it out.

Cullen, Well, Ser Carver and I went on a Templar Con '38, and when we returned, we found some crazy things going on in the Gallows.

Hawke: Uh-oh.

Cullen: My men eat furniture. They burnt my books. And ate Knight-Commander's statue! What the hell?

Hawke: Um, that statue... I kind of forgot to tell you it has side effects...

Cullen: WHAT????

Hawke: Well, now you know, you saw them.

Cullen: *looks deadly*

Hawke: I think I need to go to bathroom. Right now. See you later. *runs away*

Cullen: For some reason I have a feeling he won't return.

Edit: more Darkspawn Chronicles badassery (btw I lost, Cullen and Wynne killed all my darkspawn babies):

Hold up. Would the Litany of Adralla be able to hold the red lyrium corruption at bay?

No, that only works on demons/spirits and ( I think) mind altering magic. The lyrium statue's effect isn't an active spell, but a side effect of its presence.

Just conjecture *shrugs* -_-

BTW, I started DAO with a m!Amell, and Cullen still tells everyone in the tower that m!Amell had a very impressive Harrowing. So little Cullen is just nice like that :) He sincerely admires a mage. (Dammit, Uldred!  :pinched: )

I don't want to sound rude, but I honestly don't see the differences between discussing the characters or certain plots like the mage-templar war. Characters discussions can get heated too. For example, in the discussion of the war in the Vivienne thread the discussion was quite civil and moderate. I agree that the topic often goes too far (it is part of BSN holy trinity of war, with Cerberus thread and Romance thread ), but there are plently of people who discuss it in a normal way, and I don't see why they should 'get a life', more then the people who discuss characters.
Again, I don't mean to be rude. I'm not sure how Cullen is recruited in the Inquisition, but I don't think he's recruited afterwards. Expecially since the Inquisition was already formed in some ways, I don't see it likely that it won't have a general/army leader already, and that Cassandra/Inquisitor would recruit the general later (and it doesn't make sense to me that you put someone external to the Inquisition in that position. Yes, we are put at the head, but there's a sort of a reason).
Plus, I don't see in which group he'll be in if he was outside of the Inquisition.
I Agree that the situation is strange, but I think it is because we miss some info on the event between DA2 (Meredith's end) and Varric's interrogation.

On that first note - yes.  I wanted to respond as well, but was afraid I wouldn't be able to do it quite so politely so I stayed silent.  But I agree.

As for the rest -

It wouldn't make sense for Cass to act all surprised that Meredith was at fault had she spoken to Cullen first, because even if Cullen didn't know about the Champion's life prior to that whole shitstorm he at least could have told her that much.  Unless she didn't believe him.  My theory is that Cass seeks (heh...) him out afterward (I'm with everyone else who figures he probably wasn't in Kirkwall anymore), hears his side, and at that point he becomes a prospective choice for head of the Inquisition's military.

I could see him being nominated/chosen (maybe even without his knowledge), but not being officially put in that position yet.  I could see Plan B ™ still only being in the prep phase when The Explosion happens, which creates a new sense of urgency.  At that point Cass finds us, is like "Bullshit! You're coming with me!" and our first main story quest is to go find these pre-chosen pillars.  That unlocks those areas, where we also run into our follower peeps and recruit them, and when that's done we get our Keep, fight dragons, close Fade tears, make out with Cullen, etc. etc.

Maybe he likes m!Amell too

Hm, no, I don't think so. He's just being friendly and polite. Cullen in DAO, he's so naive, he can't hide anything. He just tells this mage dude about why he himself was nervous about the Harrowing, and abominations. He's just thinking out loud in front of people like that   Aww, that part is just like with Oren in Cousland origin. Poor kid wants to see a sword, and gets one right through his chest, same with Cullen. Anyway, comparing to the severe crush Cullen has on f!Mage, he's totally indifferent to m!Mage. But maybe my BroAmell is just not his type, so don't despair :)

I hope there will be some kind of update today. Maybe a tweet with a quote from Dorian? That would be nice.

We talked about the Darkspawn Chronicles in the chat, and here are the screenshot of Cullen and his codex entry I promised.

Darkspawn Chronicles is an AU where you are a darkspawn, and you kill everyone you love  :P

Funny, it looks like Uldred didn't rebel in this AU? Or maybe it was just irrelevant to the Archdemon?

Actually, the premise for Darkspawn Chronicles is "What If". It's a what if no one survived the Joining and Alistair was the only Grey Warden left after Ostagar. I've played through it once, and I had to laugh at some of the decisions Alistair made. Yes, Uldred still did his thing and Alistair sides with the templars. It's why Gregor and Cullen are in the Market Place.

It's okay, you're not rude. But if you'll re-read what I wrote more carefully you'll see we actually agree. Discussion about a video game=good, arguing=stupid.
