Cole himself might not even fully understand the differences. Be it between male and female or the connotations behind Sera referring to him as an 'it'. I don't even find it that offensive, since it's fine to call an animal an 'it' and spirits and demons are far more alien than animals.
Well, that's funny you should say that because I was actually going to point out that it's no longer really cool to call pets "it"! I've noticed a subtle shift over the last 10-15 years. Most people will refer to a pet as he or she if they know the gender, and many will apologize if they realize they got the gender wrong! Maybe it's different where you are?
Yea it's intresting how there is differences ^^ In Finland calling person "it" is just normal part of spoken language, it's not unpolite although grammatically it isn't correct
Fascinating! "It" is for non-human "things" in English. And like I said above, even pets are being considered "persons" of a sort these days instead of things, so it's not kosher to call a pet "it." (You might call stray cat "it" because there is no emotional connection to the animal, but you wouldn't call your best friend's cat "it"... that's rude!)
What if Cole refer to himself as 'it'? Spirits don't have genders. It depends on how he feels.
That would be interesting and something to consider but I was under the impression he identified as male.
Exactly. Even if he is only a spirit, it seriously bugs me that Sera is gonna degrade Cole by calling him "it".
It doesn't bug me; it adds flavor to the characters and their relationships (for me). Sometimes extreme cruelty between characters does bug me though, like Anders picking on Fenris or Fenris picking on Merrill.
The way I see it, if he identifies as male (no matter what he is) then he's a male. Simple as that.
Yeah. Right
