I thought Asunder said exactly that, that Merill is right.Didn't one of the writers (DG?) said that Merrill was wrong, and spirits and demons are very different indeed?

And how many times have we heard the phrase "I come in peace" from various stories only to have the 'good' entities are actually just leading naive people to slaughter? I agree on your view here because you just don't know the motivation behind a helpful spirit. What are they gaining?
Not to mention the creatures of the fade don't appear to have the same nuances as people do. What a spirit might see as 'right' or just following it's nature, might be very, very wrong in context.
Didn't one of the writers (DG?) said that Merrill was wrong, and spirits and demons are very different indeed?
I don't remember that at all. *scratches head*
I personally don't see how she can be wrong, anyway. Her basic warning was that 'all spirits are dangerous, I'm sorry you didn't understand that.' And looking at Anders and Justice? I would say she's right.

I wonder if we'll get anything today, since Jessica and some of the DA crew are flying today....
...OR, better yet, I wonder if all these Twitter questions are because she's NOT the one doing it today. And Aaryn/Allan are sitting here going "...WHAT DO WE DO?"
I think Allan asked if we like the character profiles on twitter because there are some people that don't.

Well, right, this is exactly my point : that it's a continuum. But I guess it's the character blurb that specifically calls him a spirit.Well, to be fair, he actually says this:
[DA]: So, Cole is definitely a demon?
[PW]: Welllllllll… he's definitely somewhere on the Demon-or-Spirit Spectrum of Fade Creatures (which I really hope exists somewhere). A lot of people will always see him as a demon. He would rather be a spirit. He's trying.
I'm just playing devil's advocate here-I'm interested in seeing how and why Cole shows up, and in what context.
I wonder, with all the Fade tearing and getting sucked physically into the Fade and all, with all the demons falling out of the sky and everything, if we (and Thedas) are going to find out that what we thought we knew about demons and spirits and the Fade is either wrong, or only a tiny part of the actuality.
He is a spirit, impossibly caught between the immaterial realm of the Fade and the confusing realities of our physical world, but does that make him real?

Oh, I see what you're saying now. ![]()
Also, I wonder if it's just the wording. Like All demons are spirits, but not all spirits are demons.

In Awakening, didn't Justice say that demons were just spirits corrupted by their desires?
They started out the same but one group got uppity and wanted more, drastically changing them.

I think it's just a potatO vs potAHto thing, that artificially assigns too much specificity to something that doesn't seem to fit into a neat box. I think there are things that live in the Fade and some do good things, some do bad, some do neither, and some do both when the whim strikes them.Oh, I see what you're saying now.
Also, I wonder if it's just the wording. Like All demons are spirits, but not all spirits are demons.
The Chant, a not wholly reliable source, says that demons were "born" when they became envious of mankind. (Edit: and Justice, apparently; thanks wiccame) That could just be like the birth of The Bully in high school; but it's not a separate kind of human. You know?
Anyhoo, only the writers know for sure, but this is how I've interpreted their remarks. (ETA:and it seems some if this is also an open debate in-world, given Rhys' comments.

If they did, I'll have a new target for my rage...
Well, there is no direct quote:
Lastly, Gaider implied that spirits and demons are, by nature, different, something which I was never quite clear on. They are not exactly the same thing, despite what Merrill and others would have you believe.
From here.
Turned out he later clarified (I haven't seen this part until today):
One caution: there are a few things in there which Heather either misremembered or which I wasn't clear on. The spirits & demons thing, for instance-- I don't think I said they were fundamentally different. I believe what I said is that the possession was fundamentally different (meaning Anders' situation, in comparison to Connor's situation in DAO, which was the question).
So looks like it's still a mystery. The possession thing is totally true. Anders seems to be a spirit vessel, like Wynne. In the Fade you don't see them as 2 different beings, but when a demon possesses a mage - you do.

But really though, don't bite the hand that feeds you.
Especially when the hand is feeding you companion information
At this rate if they release a 5 minute unique video for each companion detailing romance, combat and personality and cross part member relationships, someone, somewhere, will find something wrong with it.

Exactly. And especially when the Dragon Age team has been one hell of a lot more accessible, transparent, personable and nice to us than a lot of game developers are to their fandoms.

So... let me get this straight... People on twitter are complaining that the game devs are spoiling the game for them by releasing information on the game? If that's such a concern, why follow a game dev at all...? Couldn't they just un-follow them or something?
I don't use twitter, so I'm not sure how it works, but that seems the more logical choice...
