They would probably do that just to conserve how much they have. Unfortunately that isn't how it works when people are prescribed pain medication. :(
As a therapist that is truly one of the hardest things to try and help with. I'm always unbearably proud of my patients who can overcome addiction of any kind and I try to be as compassionate and understanding to those who are struggling with it. It upsets me how society views people with addictions or who are overcoming them as less than. It's such a hard uphill battle and those who can beat it deserve so much more then being looked down on. But that aside I think you are absolutely right Bev, I doubt the Chantry would give their Templars even a drop more then they needed to control them.

Thanks for the response! I'm wondering about Cullen because I know that we've seen concept art where it appears to be Cullen with other Templars. But, what if, say, we actually meet him in some way where he's alone. Would he have a supply of lyrium with him? And, if not, what would he be like then?

Yes, but we all know Hannah that you are a better person than me.   :P

Funny, I was thinking it made me a worse one!  :P

Oh, well, to make it more awkward, I haven't been a teenager in quite a while. Hence, why I feel embarrassed about not knowing these things. 0///0

Oh, I didn't mean it like that!

I meant I work with teenagers, ergo I am used to answering sexual questions.

I wasn't under the impression that you are a teenager.

(I shouldn't just assume people just know everything about me and would realize that was what I was trying to say.)

There's nothing wrong with asking at any age, and you should never do more than you feel comfortable with or feel embarrassed about the choices you've made regarding waiting for intimacy or abstaining from it.  :)

By golly, you're right. It's obviously been waaaay too long since I've played through Origins. -_-

Yes, it would be interesting to see them explore the Lyrium issue in more depth. I'm guessing part of it may be that we have not yet (maybe soon? :) ) had a Templar companion? It is also interesting that there is not a lot of discussion on the life expectancy of Templars, as iirc Lyrium is toxic in high doses. What happens to old Templars? (Is this another thing that is mentioned somewhere that I've forgotten...? Oh dear...)

There's a Templar in front of the Denerim chantry that seems to be getting rather senile.

Oh, so you are a teacher, then? And, don't worry, I consider myself quite proud of abstaining from it, regardless if many my age look down on me and question me for it...

Good point. So perhaps it just slowly fogs your awareness?

Boy, how did I come into the fun/nice/friendly Cullen thread and drag out the ugly topic? Oooooops. Sorry 'bout that.

In Origins, I think Alistair mentions old Templars are put out to pasture when they become too Lyrium-addled to function properly, usually enjoying their remaining years being cared for in a monastery. The Chantry does take care of them, but it's still pretty bleak fate when you consider it.

Incidentally, there was meant to be a quest in ME2 where Jack needed to acquire Red Sand, as her powers kept her levitating things in her sleep and it was the only thing that dulled her enough to enjoy a good nights rest. Sadly it was cut and I can understand why. Having Shepard helping to feed an addiction might be taken badly by many people, but it was an interesting concept regardless.

Haha! I have teenagers asking me awkward sex questions all the time so I'm used to explaining things.  ;)

As a heads up to others this isn't super relevant to Cullen so feel free to skip this post. It's more about me being a dork in a professional setting.

I actually had something that reminded me of you when I was at work a few days ago! So background- I was about to go into this group therapy session for troubled teens and it's the first time I'll have met them (and I don't usually work with that age so I'm super nervous.) So I walk in and naturally the very first thing I do is trip over this kids leg (which...I think was intentional on his part lol!) and yell "Sunny Beaches!" Because I know I can't cuss! Which of course led to them rioting with laughter. I kinda just embraced it, smiled and bowed when I got up. The next three hours went back and fourth between hilarious, horrifying, depressing, hilarious again and then concerning lol! I see them twice every week for the next 6 months but man, Hannah, you are a saint! I know chemically teens have fast changing moods (especially those who are bipolar) but the entire mood of the group could shift in half a second! It seemed like one or two kids really lead it which was interesting. I do really like them and they are a really hysterical and unique/interesting bunch, But How are you not dying of exhaustion every day? Toddlers are easier for me to handle lol!

Also once upon a time Cullen was a teen! This post is totally on topic! :P

Very bleak. Poor old sods.

Since you seem to remember Origins far better than I, can you tell me what they say about why they take the Lyrium? I know that 'to have power to counter the mages' is the official story, but Alistair retains his abilities, even after leaving the order. Is the idea more that it increases their abilities? (And obviously ties them to the Chantry, for better or for worse...)

I love the witty and vaguely flirty banter between Eleven and Clara/Oswin, hope we have something similar with her and Capaldi.

And yes, I can imagine him being like Rory. Nervous and timid at first, before becoming the biggest badass in the universe.

Either that or flipping out thinking that the Doctor is a mage and attacking him. O.o

EDIT: for some reason I can see him trying to murder knife the Tardis from the outside as the Doctor just watches from a camera, amused.

Someone in this thread made a clever joke about how he might be the Grey Warden guy after he wanders around in the woods without lyrium for a while. One day he randomly signs up and passes the test. I misinterpreted it and thought it was more like a Hulk situation, when he doesn't take it he magically transforms into bearded warden guy lol!

More to the point I would imagine if he were given a mission or planning on going somewhere he would pack as much lyrium as he could just to be safe but if something caught him by surprise...I'm not sure. In the book of Thedas it sounds like a severe craving and possible symptoms of dementia/forgetfulness and maybe worse.

I've played far too much Origins and I usually take Alistair with me as a party member, so his dialogue is burned into my brain.

I think he says that it usually starts after they become fully fledged Templars and take their vows. Alistair never began taking it, since he never became a full Templar before he left to join the Wardens. But the official story is that it increases their ability to use Anti-Magic against Mages and nullify their powers, as well as serve as a leash to bind them to the Chantry, who are the sole supplier of the stuff unless you go to Orzammar.

As Alistair (and a Templar Warden and Hawke) are able to use these abilities even without lyrium, he doubts whether it's even needed, but he does take it in one of the comics, suggesting that they are right that it can be used to boost the abilities to become more effective.

Ah good. I did (sort of) remember that. My thanks!

It does make sense that it would boost their abilites, though it is unfortunate that it's also such a convienient way to bind them to the Chantry.

Hold the phone, I think I may have relevant information.  Wasn't there a DG comment sometime about Templars and lyrium where he basically said that Alistair may have been of the opinion that he wasn't taking lyrium in his Chantry training but that he definitely had been.  It was something like that anyway and it pretty much recons the whole using Templar abilities without lyrium.  The current lore is they have to take it.

If you ever watched any of the classic series, the Doctor is implied to become Merlin at some point in the future, which River Song alludes to when she mentions that all good wizards in stories end up being him.

I can imagine him trying to Holy Smite the TARDIS, who would get increasingly annoyed with him. Or develop a crush on him. It's hard to say. Maybe she's one of us lurking on the forums already?
