I just don't bother getting involved anymore. There was a time when we'd all charge in there and run riot... but it was pointless as no sooner as we'd get one closed down two more would pop up in its place.

It doesn't matter why we like him anyway. Fact is, he's going to be an important character in DAI and we can romance him. If they don't like it then that's not our problem.

My theory on lyrium is that it's a crystallized form of the energy from the Fade. Blue lyrium is the kind of energy to create - even for destructive magics but that red lyrium is crystalline form of the energy released by death. I also theorize that demons are drawn to it because that death energy is... Pleasurable to them, for lack of a better way to put it. Also red lyrium can "call" to people because they're hearing the death song - or something - of those who died in proximity to form the lyrium. Or maybe that they're hearing demons calling to it?

As users take the lyrium, their minds are slowly altered to crave violence and death to "feed" the lyrium. Giving such lyrium to mages weakens their resistance to demons until they can be forcefully possessed outright as the red lyrium weakens their connection to their own flesh, so to speak. Basically red lyrium destroys and breaks down the barriers between the living and the dead, which is why Bartrand could hear it and it drove him mad since he had no connection to the Fade(according to the codex) to feed the demons with so the "song" just got louder and louder. Again: this is just a theory I've concocted with no evidence whatsoever and Im probably way off. But I needed a comprehensive lore for it in my story. :D

I hope they don't call our Inquisitor "Inquisitor" constantly, that would drive me mental!

"Your Eminence" was said in the DA gameplay demo.

Another day, another I hate Cullen and his moronic fangirls thread.  You think they'd all get sick of it after a while.  Still, I've never been disliked in such good company before.   :)

but we already know they're not all followers since there are 10 foods.

Theoretically speaking, there could be a Bethany/Caver situation.

In Origins, I think Alistair mentions old Templars are put out to pasture when they become too Lyrium-addled to function properly, usually enjoying their remaining years being cared for in a monastery. The Chantry does take care of them, but it's still pretty bleak fate when you consider it.

I wanted to touch on this particular subject, since I work in an adult assisted living home for the elderly. I can picture these poor Templars, older and their minds addled from lyrium, much like the people that I have to care for who have dementia or Alzheimers.

I never realized this before. I might have happened across it in the game, but forgot about it over the years. Anyway...

Imagine as an Inquisitor, for some reason, you have to go to one of these monasteries where Templars are "put out to pasture", and you have Cullen with you. Some of these older people are sitting quietly at tables, others are speaking softly to themselves, stuck in a loop from a time long ago, and they think they're speaking to someone who isn't there. And one is suddenly set off into a screaming rage, because something they see suddenly reminds them of a horrible incident with a mage, and the nuns have to rush to restrain him and calm him down, so he won't hurt himself, or anyone else that is there. These nuns have to dole out small portions of Lyrium, feeding the old templar's addiction, because to take them off of it entirely would be too cruel. Some of these old templars are so far along that they can't feed themselves, they have to be fed by the nuns; and they can't tell when they have to go, so they have to wear cloth diapers like a baby. The nuns have to change them when one soils himself.

What a bleak future indeed. I hope there's some way to get Cullen off the stuff before it's too late.

You paint quite a moving picture there Chandra.   :(

I hadn't thought about the past their prime Templars in that light before.  I don't really have anything more to add but your post will make me think more about the future of those afflicted with the addiction if it ever becomes something we have to deal with in-game.  Thank-you.

So Chachi vas BoBinks cleaned up my snip of fic. But then she also said she screamed at the screen. So now I don't know if I dare post it. I don't want you all to hate me. If I post it will you promise not to rage much? And still love me. And not send me hate mail? :)

That's what I'm hoping for. I can see some Cass/Cullen skill overlap, so I'm thinking (hoping) we'll get to choose between either the Seekers or the Templars.

I'm also hoping for a Cullen reveal for the Follower Friday tomorrow. It would be so much fun to have him revealed as companion now that everybody outside this thread seems so convinced that he's just an NPC.

So would it be the Chantry that takes care of the retired Templars? How would this kind of thing be set up? I remember the confused old Templar that you meet in DAO (Denerim?). And also the blind one in the Alianage.

Wow, Chanda! That's definitely some intense food for thought. I can just imagine poor Cullen walking through that scene trying to stay focused on duty and not think about his own future.

So Chachi vas BoBinks cleaned up my snip of fic. But then she also said she screamed at the screen. So now I don't know if I dare post it. I don't want you all to hate me. If I post it will you promise not to rage much? And still love me. And not send me hate mail? :)

I promise I will not rage at all, I will still love you, and I will send no hate mail.

Fic is fic. It's just an exploration of the setting and characters. It doesn't affect canon at all. As far as I'm concerned, in fic anything goes!

Some fics are to my taste and some aren't, but I don't see any point getting mad about it. They're just stories, not some kind of verbal assault on the sanctity of my headcanon.  :P

That's what I'm hoping for. I can see some Cass/Cullen skill overlap, so I'm thinking (hoping) we'll get to choose between either the Seekers or the Templars.

Aw, I hope not! I like both and want both!  :)

Oh, I would have preferred to get both :) But with the number of warriors as suggested companions it's one of the few solutions I can come up with where Cullen is still a companion and not merely an NPC. We'll have to wait and see, I guess :)

Yes right! But wasn't there one more who was a bit of a nutter outside the Chantry? You could ask the Templar next to him about how lyrium affected the Templars over time? Maybe I am not remembering correctly?

I think you're right, but I can't find him in the DA wiki.

I was just thinking, wouldn't it be utterly heartbreaking if much like Justice causing Karl to briefly revert to his old self despite being made Tranquil, the Fade Tears were able to allow these lyrium-addled Templars to return to their former selves if they get close enough to it?

(If anyone has seen the episode of Stargate Atlantis, "The Shrine", they did an absolutely heartwrenching story with a similar premise, about an alien device that allowed those affected by a dementia-causing parasite, to experience one day of lucidity before they died.)

We already know that demonic possession and exposure to the Fade is enough to reverse Tranquility, so would it be the same for those suffering from severe lyrium withdrawal or lyrium exposure?

Man, I never would imagine hating myself for having to close a Fade Tear, but if we presented with that kind of scenario, that would definitely do it.

I can't remember his name, but there was another Templar outside the Chantry who was set to be sent out... to wherever they send Templars when they're too lyrium addled (the other Templar said a specific place, but I can't remember what it was). He didn't want to go and wanted to continue to serve the order, though, so I imagine they give him whatever small job they can with supervision from a fellow Templar.

The one in Denerim? I remember him too, it was actually pretty sad to talk with him : /
