Animal helms ride that fine line between utterly ridiculous and completely awesome. I think Cullen manages to pull it off, but I have to wonder how he sees in that thing. Also, his voice is probably super muffled. I like to think that he'll be making inspiring speeches but no one can ever understand him.

I just love Dragon Age elves, with their doofy noses and bare feet. I mean, DA2 was awesome, but it was so bland having to be a human. With that choice back, my level of excitement for DAI is at a frankly stupid point right now.

Right? Once I set aside all my anxieites regarding the LI situation, I really am over the moon at being able to be an elf again. It means everything!!!! I loved my Hawke, but he was definitely a character. I didn't relate to him.

My cousin gave Fenris back by accident because he thought "Take him, he's yours!" meant giving Fenris permission to kill Danarius.

Oh I did this once....I quickly reloaded. Just the look on Fenris's face....I was like, OMG I am sooooo sorry!

hmm, i had something to say but damn if i didn't forget.

 

ah well, um, the idea that cullen may be celene's champion makes my eyes narrow. also i think cullen does not usually wear a helmet simply as a game design thing. like npc's w/and w/out names. they want us to recognize them as semi-important characters.

 

cullen and mages, imo, cullen definitely has issues w/mages. he's not a cold blooded killer abt it, tho. but he's a believer in what the chantry and the templar order teaches. especially after the tbc. who knows what has happened since da2, and how hawke--if a mage or pro-mage--may have influenced his views.

 

i think his reaction should be pretty hilarious if you play mage and drop outta the fade like that. all i can see is him being like wth!?! and this is gonna be the leader of the inquistion?!?

 

he prolly won't trust you at first.   i think. but like has been said, it's hard to know where he is on things since the end of da2. who knows what may have happened.

um, i doubt it means anything but it would be nice if that was an inference to cullen fighting more than not. and not simply cuz the npc's all run around wearing their armor all the friggin' time! (i'm afraid that will be the case)

 

although, tbh, i have no idea what joke Mike was getting at w/the #thatswhatcallbackdo. even after watching that vid for a lil bit.

To me, this seems like a necessary attitude for an active templar, actually.

 

Giving a real life personal example here: My residents can never be my friends. 

 

They're fantastic kids. We have a lot of fun. I care deeply about them. I invest a tremendous amount of my time and physical and mental energy into doing what's best for them. I'd take a bullet for any of them, without hesitation.

 

We're not friends, though. I'm here to provide counseling and keep them safe, not to act like a peer. It would be a major violation of boundaries and I would not be able to serve them the way it's my job to serve them. Saying we aren't friends isn't at all an indictment of the appropriate relationship we do have.

 

Likewise, a templar would have to preserve boundaries, too. Be friendly with the mages, absolutely, but that's a bit different than being friends.

 

The situation would of course be different if the mage was not directly under the templar's charge, but that wouldn't have been the case for Cullen in Kirkwall.

 

Not to say Cullen doesn't have any issues in that department. He does. I just don't think the statement itself is that bad.

This is a great analogy, Hannah (thanks for sharing!), and exactly why I continue to come back to fraternization as being the big issue for him. I really think that's why he ran away from Amell and Surana, for example, because it's just inappropriate and in many ways counterproductive to have relationships like that with one's charges. But, the new world of Thedas in 9:40, however, has no Circles.

 

No mages Cullen will meet are in his charge. So what then? That's where I personally think it will just depend upon the individual mage and his interactions with that person. We've seen him befriend mages and have crushes on mages, so in principle it's possible with the right person. Even if he were to continue to have a general distrust of mages in the abstract. So I'm optimistic about the mage-Cullen romance in DA:I (independent of the fact that I think, for gameplay reasons, the advisor romances will probably have fewer gates than the follower romances).
