How can people hate a character they hardly know anything about, it makes me mad

What annoys me the most is the fact that they constantly ask "why do people like Cullen"while they don't even bother to read through the official discussion threads to find out, since they're so curious.

Call me cynic but  making hate threads about a character you don't like, who's apparently a hot topic and has already two threads dedicated to him, seems more like a cry for attention to me.Just look at how many replies that particular thread got in less than a day...I could be wrong but still.

Like poor old Sebastian and Jacob Taylor. While they don't do anything that makes them hateworthy, the size of their threads on these forums make it rather obvious that not many people find them particularly interesting, compared to the other companions. They suffer from the worst fate that can befall a character, short of being seen as The Scrappy, the fans simply found them dull.

Which makes me wonder why people are so content to throw hate at Cullen, who people actually like to talk about? Isn't the fact that we're paying attention actually showing that he's a character we want to know more about and see more of?

Well, there was that one moment where Sebastian threatened to take an entire city state to war, which would cause many more deaths than the destruction of one building, over one man who wasn't even from that city state.

I don't hate Sebastian but he has made me facepalm and desire a murder knife option.

Jacob I don't hate, but he didn't really attract me, either, and his 180 in personality once aboard the Normandy was weird to me. It was like he and Miranda switched personalities once on the Normandy. Jacob became closed off and private, while Miranda because open and happy to talk about herself and the organisation she worked for.

I can understand why those who romanced him would be less than pleased with that guy, though...

Whether you love or hate him, he is discussed ALOT! Which to me means there is a big interest in him, one way or another.

I am not sure if all these hate thread creators realise they are actually strengthening his popularity.

What amuses me is that in some small way the haters have played a part in Cullen's return.

Now, I'm not saying for a second that the devs brought him back to "appease the fans" or "troll the haters", BUT David Gaider himself did say that they're more inclined to use/re-use characters that provoke a strong reaction. The fact that Cullen not only generates a fair amount of adoration but also A LOT of hate goes to show that he's obviously a solid character, add to the mix that his story arc is very relevant to the events happening in DAI and that he's still very much a blank canvass to work with, it goes as no surprise that he's been brought back for a 3rd round.

Had Cullen created no reaction at all and deemed by the majority as "meh" from the very beginning then I doubt he would've ended up with such a large role (or any role at all) in DAI, let alone upgraded to LI status. Hell, maybe he wouldn't have even made it into DA2! The thing that surprises me are the people who consider his story arc to be of no relevance to DAI at all (and there are a few), it makes me wonder what version of the game they've been playing, LOL!

Have to disagree with you on Jacob. He practically screams "HATE ME!". But I really liked Sebastian. The only thing I have with him, (other than the romance), is that the only piece of speculation you can really do with him surrounds his Anders tantrum, whereas Cullen has his lyrium, his mages, his internal struggle, all of which could be taken in many different ways.

Jacob only became hateworthy for me in ME3, when he cheated on FemShep. And while I liked Sebastian and consider his voice actor brilliant, even as him being blinded by rage, his rant against Anders seemed a little forced and OOC from the restrained guy we'd seen throughout the game. Maybe it was intentional, but it struck me as something set up for Exalted Marches which sadly never came to fruition. Hopefully, we'll get this plot thread resolved in DAI.

And my take on the Cullen hate can best be summed up by this;

I'm thinking one of three things on this. Either
1.we post a lot of pages and going through them seems daunting
2.they are worried it's all just girls squeeing and being obnoxious
3.They don't really care and are just trying to get peoples dander up.

In that thread does Guy/girl that made it get involved in the discussion a lot?

So Cullen is in the DAI for haterservice? XD

Lol, some people are so annoying blaming fans and fanservice..

Eh, the character hate doesn't really bother me. We all have reasons to like him, and a lot of people have legitimate reasons to dislike him. It's when people shame the fans it becomes sort of sad. I've HATED characters other people put on a pedestal and declare their woobie boo boo, but I don't shame them for that. It does become irritating when people demand I like the character, though, but I don't think anyone here demands that of anyone? I can't speak for the fans elsewhere, of course, though...

Nah, I've hated Jacob since ME2. When I romanced him and got to the prize bit, it was the creepiest thing I have ever heard, and I have heard my fair share of pervy stuff. I immediately switched off my Xbox while I gagged and restarted my game so I could romance someone else. After that, I realised how stupid everything he said sounded and how rubbish his loyalty quest was. Hate the guy. Always kill him in the suicide mission.

Naw. What I saying is that the haters going on and on about Cullen all over the forums/tumblr/twitter/etc has drawn even more attention to him than it would've done with just fan adoration. People only pay so much attention to "squeeing fangirls", but throw in a bunch of hate and uproar and people get curious and thus it continues to grow. It was only a matter of time before the devs/writers started to wonder what on earth was going on, lol.

Honestly I wouldn't worry about it to much! They could be ranting and raving about much worse things. If they are spending their time complaining about a fictional character then that's less time for them to be out causing trouble in the real world lol! Everybody has to have a complaining outlet! Why not Cullen :P

I think It's the third...Can't really say for sure but in my experience when sb's curious about something it's only natural they look it up before coming to conclusions.

Whether they're discouraged by the size of the thread I'd say probably yes, although they could always ask politely like some people already have,It's not like we'll eat them for not finding a character we like interesting,it's their opinion after all...As for the second one, anyone who assumes that we're a bunch of obnoxious fangirls, without even bothering to look up is  definitely not worth the hassle,as he/she's clearly prejudiced...

Yea I guess. I don't just understand how it's bad to have returning characters in the game and why it's fanservice.. I bet Bioware wouldn't put someone in the game just because he/she has some fans. Why don't these people trust the writing team ^^;

Exactly, every one is entitled the their opinions, their likes and dislikes.  But so many of these threads end up being a defend your reasons for liking/hating such and such. When really there is no need, its no body elses business but yours and whether you like someone or not has no effect on how their game is going to be played out.

The devs put in who they like and who THEY feel will add to the game and all this, they are just put in for fan service, is a load of Griffon droppings.

What it really boils down to is I don't like this person and I don't want him in my team, so he has no right to be in the game.

It's all three. People see loads of pages in the official thread and they don't think they can catch up. Then a new thread starts and they think it's a safer place to join in on a discussion.

Maybe we should put a disclaimer on the first page that we welcome newcomers and they can just jump to the last page and join in without having to backtrack and catch up. I mean we won't start being all hipster and superior if someone new has questions and opinions that we already discussed a thousand times. Right? I can start all over again. It's my favourite DA topic, right after romance. :D

I'll admit that as a bloke, I can understand why some might believe that all Cullen fans are just rabid fangirls. It was the similar reaction towards Zevran and Fenris that put me off those characters at first (although I never hated them) and took me a while to come to appreciate both the characters outside of their romance arcs.

While I've still yet to romance Zevran (something I've been meaning to do), I'll concede that after taking the time to befriend Fenris, most of my female Hawke's ended up suffering from a Betty and Veronica dilemma between picking him and Anders to romance.

But as I've said before, even my male Inquisitors will try and form a bromance with Cullen.

Like complaining so much, tagging their hate on tumblr or making new threads. I don't like many characters either but I never post about them.

I'll be honest I don't pay much attention to those threads and it's fine if some of you guys do, but the only line I remember reading that really set me off was
"Why do people like Cullen?" And someone's response was "Eh because they're women, they like anything." That is such a chauvinistic, back handed, dismissive and disgusting way to look at it. Even if he was joking that poster said so much about his personal character. It really irritated me and sort of struck me to the core about how unfair some men are when it comes to things like YOU women expressing personal opinions and preferences! GASP! And that because you are women those opinions are inherently wrong and that you aren't intelligent enough to realize you are wasting energy on liking something stupid!

People man. Sometimes. I am kinda ashamed to admit this but I do hope he is a companion not only because I really hope for it....but also so everyone saying he is nothing but a fan service NPC who has no chance of getting in is proven wrong.....

But on a WAY more positive note I really hope tomorrow we get a follower Friday. I'd imagine you all already know who I hope it is, but really I'm excited to see any one :D

Zevran's romance is my favorite romance. I adore him. You should totally do it one of these days!

It's literally one of those, "This monster I have created!" moments.  They post a hate-thread, it gets shut down, they post another, shut down, and again and again, and someone is going to take a peak at the the hell those "crazy fangirls" are doing. Someone's going to say, "Maybe they're not crazy."

And then we a Cullen romance. Just as planned:ph34r:

I get the impression that they tend to set each other off. For example, a Cullen thread opens up (either to troll or because the OP is genuinely intrigued etc) and people post their opinions, it becomes heated and more people get involved, some join in purposely to cause trouble, others join because they genuinely dislike the character etc and it just spirals from there.

People like voicing their opinions (good or bad), and people enjoy finding like minded individuals. I guess it's much the same as how we all came together, but for the opposite reason.

Or in other words, Cullen being a love interest is a gift. Unfortunately, some people will use that as an excuse into indulge in the G.I.F.T.

This is really the core of the problem. It taps into the latent misogyny in the gaming community.

Anyhoo, agree, I think if we don't want folks talking about us... we need to stop talking about them and why they do things.  :D

Pretty much this,I just think that "why do you like Cullen" threads aren't needed when he's already thoroughly discussed in two existing threads...Even if the OP is genuinely interested which is a different story, the majority of such threads end up locked because people become hostile and vocal and at this point it's pretty much expected for a thread like this to turn into a flame war.
