Ewwwwwwwwww nononononononononononononononono Gaider said that it won't happen because he has "the mentality of a child"
Which is strange, because in his last scene, Cole no longer seemed to have one. But how in hell does organic mental development mean anything lasting for a spirit who has no such concerns? Not that I wanted to romance Cole, but I find the revulsion toward any romantic feelings towards him to be irksome.
"Mentality of a child" is the wrong phrase, I've come to learn; it's more like "social understanding". Cole watched Evangeline change her clothes, and like a child, he doesn't focus on her nakedness - she's just undressing, an everyday thing to do. Cole is first and foremost a spirit, and a spirit is like a child in the sense they don't understand sex because they don't have a need or desire for it. Spirits are ideals - virtues and sins, if you like. Justice says this, basically:
Nathaniel: Do you do anything besides ponder what is just and unjust?
Justice: It is not all I do. It does, however, define my being.
Nathaniel: So you were born just? A little, self-righteous baby of justice crawling around the Fade?
Justice: I was not born. I simply am.
At the very end of Asunder, I took Cole's assertiveness as "I know what I am now, don't **** with me."
Not lecturing, just sharing what I have learned since it has helped me better understand Cole.
