So how does a secondary character that doesn't really do much of anything in the game have so many fans?
Perhaps that's a reflection of how incredibly interesting a character Cullen is, just maybe. He caught my attention in Origins, of course. Not because I played a mage, either. My canon Warden is a Cousland lady, anyway. I'm not joking, I eventually made a mage only to see those scenes that involved Cullen within the matrix of what I'd heard about him. For myself, anyway.
No, what caught my eye in Origins was how strong he was, to have survived prolonged torture. That he was "the last one" of the Templars held by those demons in the broken Circle, who persisted when the rest of them were destroyed. But the experience scarred and devastated him and he railed against that wounding, like so many soldiers in my real life experience. It broke my heart listening to Cullen yell and fight angrily against my Warden, that she should destroy everyone who might, possibly cause someone else to be hurt like he had been. Because he sounded like some of my closest friends and loved ones, sigh.
And then I saw him again in DA2. There, Cullen was stronger, better. You could tell he still worried and fought. But he wasn't the broken, devastated man locked in a cage like he was in Origins, either. He'd grown past it, beyond it. And he listened, learned, and grew even more. Until rather than seek out the destruction of mages he couldn't discern were safe, or not -- he fought to protect them. I realized Cullen was remarkable when he told Meredith he'd take on the responsibility of watching out for mages, because "I believe that's what it means to be a Templar."
I so want to see what those events made of him, honestly. I think Cullen's fascinating a character. Because he isn't static and unchanging. There's a dynamic complexity to his character development, rather. He GROWS through his experiences. And it's interesting to watch happen. And, yea, a whole bunch of others seem to feel similarly, obviously enough.
Oh, and of course. He's kinda hot.
