lol, the next prompt should be: romanced Cullen asks the Inquisitor to put on some kind of undergarments, because she will have to travel by horse, and he worries about, well, let's say her health, and not flashing her entire army, companions, advisors, a bunch of Grey Wardens who joined their cause, and a couple of chaste priests who do Chantry stuff for the Inquisition

This'll be kinda bad cause I'm rusty and I've never ever written Cullen or my Quizzy before.   Also, I don't know what this is! It just kinda turned into... whatever this is.

Cullen watched as Delphine hopped around the room, hurriedly pulling on clothes that had been haphazardly thrown about the night before. He bit the inside of his cheek to keep from chuckling as she managed to tangle her tunic into a knot around her, shaking his head as he put a hand on her shoulder to steady her before she tripped over herself. She exclaimed something at him that he couldn’t understand because she was trying to pull her head through one of her sleeves. Cullen couldn’t help but laugh at that—for all she tried to affect a somber and serious attitude in front of everyone else, she had her own special brand of silliness that only came out in front of him, and it was just so damned cute.

 

“Pardon? I didn’t catch that,” he said, chuckling as he helped her put her tunic on properly. Delphine shot him a small smile, mouthing “thank you” before bending down to look underneath the bed, presumably for her pants.

 

“I said, how are you already dressed? You even have your armour on!” She huffed as she emerged from her search, hopping around as she pulled her socks on.

 

“Well, it helps when you don’t throw your clothes every which way—“

 

“As I recall, ma cher, you had some part in that last night,” Delphine said, tossing her hair back around her shoulder and arching an eyebrow at him, smirking as he flushed. He cleared his throat and rubbed the back of his neck, trying to hide his blush behind his arm. They had both been a little… eager last night, but that still didn’t detract from the fact that his clothes had been more or less piled up in the same general area whereas her pants were currently hanging off of the chandelier and one of her boots was on top of the wardrobe.

 

“—and when you wake up early enough so that hurrying like this doesn’t become an issue.” Cullen finished.

 

“Oh, it’s not really an issue. We don’t leave until 8, and it’s only just gone past 7 now, so that gives me 15 minutes to get dressed and then another 20 minutes to get everything else ready—aha! Can you grab those for me please?” she asked, gesturing towards her pants hanging from the ceiling. Cullen tugged them free and handed them to her, wondering how she managed to get dressed in the mornings in time on her own. Especially since she was so short: did she wake up a little earlier to account for the extra time she’d spend having to jump for pieces of clothing too high for her to reach? Or was she only ever this explosive around him?

 

Somehow, he doubted it.

 

She nodded her thanks at him as she took her pants from him, shooting him a furtive glance before reaching up and shyly planting a chaste kiss on his lips. He smiled into her kiss, pulling her in closer and deepening it. This was all so new to him, and at first he had been unsure, hesitant about entering into a relationship with her—the world was burning around them, was this really the time? With so much at stake?—but there was something… restive, something that just felt right about doing things like this with her, being with her.

 

The world was burning around them. If anything, there was no time like the present.

 

“How is it that you always know what the time is?” he asked absentmindedly, as he ran his fingers through her unruly blonde curls, holding her close and breathing in her scent—cinnamon, leather and lavender soap. She sighed against him, laying her head on his shoulder, snaking her arms around his waist.

 

“Knowing the exact time can mean the difference between life and death, sometimes, in my line of work,” she said slowly, looking up at him. “Leliana knows this as well.”

 

She stepped away, running her hand through her hair. Her old occupation as a Bard was a source of contention between them, and not just because he preferred what she referred to sarcastically as the “honest and direct” approach. Cullen could see and understand the need for espionage, but Delphine had a bad habit of taking on espionage jobs herself instead of letting Leliana and her people handle it—often without telling anyone she was doing it, and had landed herself in quite a few life-threatening situations as a result.

 

Not to mention, he really did prefer the honest and direct approach.

 

A loud clap brought Cullen out of his reverie as Delphine brought her hands together and smiled tightly at him. “Speaking of the time, I’ve only got 3 minutes left to get dressed!” She turned away from him, shoving her legs through her trousers hurriedly.

 

Cullen frowned. “Um. Delphine. Aren’t you- ah, forgetting something?”

 

Delphine turned back to him, one eyebrow raised quizzically. “What do you mean?” She asked, tucking her tunic into her pants.

 

He felt his neck and face start to flush red again. Maker, why couldn’t he stop blushing?!? Especially considering everything they had done last night… “Um. Well. S-surely there’s enough time for you to find your- ah. Smalls.”

 

Delphine stared at him, flabbergasted at his sudden bashfulness, but soon a slow wicked grin slid onto her face. Somehow, she managed to raise her eyebrow even higher. “Oh, ma cher,” she said, chuckling, “I thought you would have seen last night. I don’t wear any.”

 

“What?” Cullen’s sputtered, utterly scandalized as his eyes widened. “But—you don’t--? But when you’re riding—“

 

“Oh, my leathers are enough padding for horse-riding—“

 

“B-but when you dismount surely— what about all the other people?!—“

 

Delphine laughed right out loud at that, bringing her hand up to cup his flushed face. “Ma cher,” she said fondly, green eyes twinkling with mirth, “I’m wearing armour. No one can see anything, so you don’t need to worry about my honour.” She walked away, still laughing as she pulled on her boots and then strode towards the door. She stopped there, hand on the doorknob as she tossed her hair back over her shoulder and looked back at him.

 

“Besides, I prefer to be au naturale,” she drawled, winking at him before departing from the room.

One or two days ago you guys talked about where Cullen was at the end of DA2. Was he recruited? Why hadn't he told Cassandra the whole story. I don't think Cullen had the whole picture.

 

So I have been thinking about when Cassandra interrogates Varric and how he changed her mind about what happened in Kirkwall.

I am sure that directly after the event with the Chantry, Cullen would send a report to the Templars. Maybe even the Seekers came as an internal police to do an investigation. I don't think they would know the whole story. I don't think Cullen knows where Meredith got the sword from. So the reports and the investigation would at first only contain information that

- Tention between the Templars and Mages had grown, Orsino was rallying support from the citizens to install a new Vicount.

- the Chantry did nothing to calm the situation.

- The Chantry was blown up in a terrorist action by an apostate Mage, ex Warden, named Anders.

- Meredith called for an Annulment

- A civilian named Hawke became involved in the fighting and sided with <Mage/Templars>

- Orsino became an abomination

- Meredith decided to kill civilians, Cullen forced her to step down.

- Meredith became batshit crazy

 

I am certain Cullen did not understand at that point in time about the red lyrium and how everything fit together. Sure he must have seen the sword, but would he truly understand that the lyrium was driving her mad. Also I am sure they must have tried at one point to interrogate Hawke. If Hawke was a Mage then they would not find him/her. But as a Vicount I bet you Hawke covered up as much as possible - not wanting anything pointing towards them. Vicount Hawke also decided to leave (how quickly fortune changes), perhaps the reason was because Hawke realized someone would come after him/her. So it's possible Hawke never was questioned at all and all info came from the Templars.

 

But then we have 2 or 3 years more to cover.

 

Further investigation, that could have been ongoing for 1-3 years would probably lead them to investigate the red lyrium, try to find it's source. So along the way they would probably hear about Bartrands expedition, maybe even find the place of the red lyrium (and bad stuff started to happen). But nobody put the exact pieces together until eventually 3 years later when Cassandra was looking for Hawke and Varric told her the whole story.

 

I think this scenario makes sense to me and explains how Cassandra was unaware of the whole puzzle.

 

The only question that remains is the EXACT reason why they were looking for Hawke. She does say in the end that she wants Hawke because she believes the Champion can stop the madness, someone people can rally behind. Instead she got the whole picture.

 

I believe that Cullen might already be recruited at this point, prior to the investigation (he might have pointed her to Varric). Or she would be going to see him right after Varrics interrogation to get confirmation on details she was told and then sees Cullens potential and recruits him on the spot.

I like your theory I always thought myself that Cullen wouldn't be able to tell Cassandra much about what happened in Kirkwall, because what he saw was that Meredith grew paranoid, then she got mad, then she started glowing and moving statues (WTF?). Cullen probably had no idea why, and after what happened with Wilmod he probably assumed she got possessed by a powerful demon. Meredith only mentions the idol in front of Cullen once, when she points the sword at him. He probably couldn't even remember what she was saying afterwards, because brains are weird like that.

It was fantastic with just the right amount of meaningfulness underlining the humour

The good thing about writing Cullen is that we haven't really seen a lot of his personality other than his shy sweetness and his professional demeanor so there is actually a lot of wiggle room for him at the moment to be able to write him how you think he'd act rather than sticking to how he is in-game.

Thanks!  I'm trying not to get too overzealous with figuring her out, since when the game comes out we'll get to see the actual origins behind our Quizzy's and if I don't plan her out too much then I won't need to retcon too much, but...  she is a lot of fun. I've headcanoned that she's a Bard from Orlais and that's why she was at the peace summit, and that instead of sleeping most nights (she doesn't want to spend any more time in the Fade than she already has) she instead climbs all over the outside of the Keep and explores... and sometimes she does it drunk... >.> (she can be kinda reckless)

 

I've also headcanoned that she meets Cullen one night when she missteps while climbing around the outside of the Keep and lands outside his room/office/study. Needless to say, he's not very happy or impressed with the Inquisitor at that point. Afterwards, she climbs outside to his room/office/study every other night to basically poke fun at him, and after a while, she starts coming around every night just to talk. Since she's a Bard, she has a hard time trusting and being intimate with people, but eventually she learns to trust him. Even if they don't agree with each other's methods.

Random question time! Would you rather Cullen be a companion or do you think the advisor aspect will be more interesting?

 

I really love companions because you get to drag them around in battle, but after thinking about it, it might be cool to see how interactions go. They do have the same budget, so assuming they have the same amount of content, they will have to implore their banter and such some other way. I think that will be a nice change for me personally because whenever the LI is a companion I tend to drag them along EVERYWHERE, and knowing now that who you bring to certain situations makes a difference, I think it is for the best. I might actually change my companion group make-up! *le gasp*
