My canon Cousland actually doesn't invite Dairren to her bed. Or anyone. (Until Alistair, anyway.) Virginity being a hot commodity for a good marriage and all that. But she does tell Alistair that she has licked a lampost in the winter just to see him blush.  Even if she hasn't actually. She also says, "Only the ones where we're making mad love in my tent," when he asks her if she has weird dreams. Partly to see him blush, but mostly so she doesn't have to answer. >.> She's not... good at dealing with her grief, at least, not at first.

Nope not in my canon anyway. For my Cousland it was all about the knight she could never have because he wasn't a noble. Oh the angst!

 

I have done so in other playthroughs. Didn't really like it. Although I do love to tease him in the library over reading 'the naughty book'.

Guys, I just had a thought (and forgive me, and by all means, please correct me if I'm wrong, because I'm still very new to Dragon Age), but DG said something about Cullen's last name, right? 

 

So, assuming that Mr. Gaider wasn't trolling us ("Cullen is Cullen's last/only name! Mhuahaha!"), the only humans in Thedas that have last names are nobles, right? At least, again, as far as I know. So, assuming I'm not wrong about that, (and also assuming DG wasn't trolling   ), is there a possibility that Cullen might have noble blood?

I mean, it wouldn't be unheard of for nobles to join the Chantry or the Order, right? In Asunder, Evangeline used to be a minor noble, and I think she says that the young templar guarding the phylactery room was also the second son or something of another noble house.

 

Thoughts? Rebuttals? Am I wrong? (probably)

 

EDIT: add-on here, but basically this just spawned off of one of the Advisor gifsets going around tumblr right now. I mean, Cassandra and Josephine had their last names mentioned, and they're both nobles, right? I'm not sure about Alistair, but I'm pretty sure he doesn't actually take on "Theirin" as his last name unless/until he becomes King, because he was never really legitimized before then, and "they made it clear to [him] that he was a commoner".

I hope Cullen doesn't have a surname, and that he's a commoner. Most of the interesting templars we've seen so far were from noble families (Meredith, Evangeline, even Alistair!), but we know that Chantry accepts everybody, even the elves. So I hope that Cullen's story is a story of a kid who didn't have anyone behind him: no big name, no money, no title, no personal tutors to teach him how to read, how to fight. But he had a goal, and he worked hard to achieve it, and he earned his place in the world. I like such stories, and I want my Inquisitor to respect and admire a man who managed to achieve so much with so few options

I'd prefer him not to have a Surname. Perhaps he doesn't and Cameron (or whoever it was) just assumed that people knew DG was joking about his Surname? ... Or maybe he does? I guess it doesn't really matter, whatever his background he's had a suitably hard enough life to count as the underdog that came through adversity and triumphed.

No, I'm usually crushing badly on Mr. Hot Ginger Knight, because I'm into ginger knights (which is kind of obvious, because I'm in the Cullen thread, lol). Speaking of which, since the Keep doesn't care about my saves, I don't have to worry about ruining my saves with the mods anymore, and will totally install Ser Gilmore now. And poor Alistair will die a virgin, because Gilmore is more ginger. 

 

Back to Cullen: yes, I thought he had red hair in Origins, but looks like his hair is just dark-blond, and it was the lighting. Or blood magic. Or lyrium. But it doesn't really matter what color his hair is now. It's more important that it looks like he washes it regularly

I think that maybe he does have a surname, but it's a spoiler? A personal quest? Maybe he thought he was an orphan, but turned out he had parents, who gave him to the Chantry for some reason, and he's looking for clues why, and where can they be now? And we can help him with that, and find something interesting, maybe? He doesn't have to be a nobleman's bastard. He may be a child of a Circle mage, which will be quite shocking, I imagine, and may change his opinion about the Circle system significantly, if he realises that he lost his mother because of Chantry's rules. Wow, I guess yesterday was an odd day to be away from the forums. I'm SO sorry to those negatively affected by the Cullen reveal yesterday. I'm so sad that we've lost some folks from our community.   I hope everyone finds a place where they're happy and can share about some part of the game they enjoy.

It seems that yesterday all hell went lose and the dams collapsed, flooding us with news. And here I was, thinking that I could skip the event, since I assumed they would mostly keep to standard answers, we all know by know. Boy, was I wrong? Still recuperating, especially that I spent last few hours trying to catch up.

 

Anyway, still gutted about Cullen being straight. One of the reasons why I love this thread is that it's always buzzing with variety of fans, bringing different perspectives, creativity and fun. I can understand reasons behind withdrawing from the thread when being massively disappointed, still I will miss those guys and I hope they will pop in every now and again.

 

Bitter-sweet feeling at this moment, with the excitement of finally finding out about Scribbles Josephine. She's absolutely gorgeous and we finally know her name. And we have 8 LIs. And we know the voice actors for our Inquisitors. I must admit I am very curious about Jon Curry and whether I will hear a bit of Zev in his voice.

 

Oh, and Vamp having a little sprogglet! All the feels.

So, the Inquisitor goes to the ball and for whatever reason, Cullen ends up having to come along-- either because he's an advisor and all the advisors have to go because they're the face of the Inquisition, or because they suspect something might be going on behind the scenes and he's coming along to investigate/help keep an eye on the Inquisitor, who has to entertain all the nobles and important people at the ball to gain support for the Inquisition and won't be able to pay as much attention. Either way, he's vaguely uncomfortable because he's out of his element. Cue interesting/awkward banter and conversation! Bonus points for dancing!

And I don't mind. I'll read anything you've written. I love all of what I've read of your work so far!

Sorry this took so long, my daughter woke crying about gawd knows what not long after I started so its missing a lot of the detail I wanted to put in, but hope you enjoy nonetheless.

Josephine couldn't help the smile that threatened to spread her lips wide as she watched him. Such a change in his demeanour and no longer sporting that smug little grin he had been flashing at her over the last couple of days. He could be quite pleased with himself when ever he gained the Inquisitors favor and he had acquired it more and more often as of late to her great annoyance. There she was, day after day putting quill to the parchment, scouring her brain until the vein near her eye twitched for the best, non-confrontational solution to all their delimas and all of it seemed to be for naught.


No, it was always Cullen that got the nod of approval to send his troops forth. Always Cullen that got her smiles that accopanied her "good work". Never her, and oh how Josephine loved to see that smile. There was something special about how her nose twitched and crinkled as her lips parted to show a row of small, straight teeth. The way that her eyes creased at the corners as her full cheeks were raised up by the corners of her mouth. But who was she kidding? It was almost painfully obvious that their leader only had eyes for Cullen. Just about as painfully obvious as the fact that the man would follow her around like a smitten little puppy if he wasn't so reserved in his manner.


Tonight was different though, for tonight, the Inquisitor was finally doing as Josephine had suggested and had spent the majority of her time schmoozing with the Orlesian nobles that had gathered for the evening. And Cullen, well, he floundered around the room while sticking close to the walls as he watched the Inquisitor with a frown furrowing his brow. Josephine knew she sounded jealous, maybe even a tiny bit bitter, but it was simply too perfect to see the military advisor completly and utterly out of his element even if Varric and Leliana were shooting sympathetic looks in his direction. There was absolutely no way that she was going to let this opportunity go to waste, Josephine thought as she moved to stand beside him.


"She looks beautiful tonight, don't you agree?" She said while nodding her head to indicate the Inquisitor.


"Of course," he murmured back distractedly as his eyes followed the slide of a hand descending lower and lower down the Inquisitors back.


"Tell me Cullen," Josephine begun, "why is it you wither around like a wallflower instead of cutting in and dancing with her. I'm sure she wouldn't mind. In fact, I think she may even be grateful for it."


He blushed at her suggestion, the brightening of his cheeks clearly seen in the glow of the hundreds of candles that lit the ballroom. "I, uh, I don't think I could."


"Well, it isn't too difficult. You simply tap the man on the shoulder and..."


"No, you misunderstood--" his blush deepened "--I never really learnt how to dance, not confidentially anyway."


Josephine turned her face away from him to hide her smile, the Maker really was making this far too easy for her. She let out a discrete breath and schooled her features before turning back to him. "Would you like to learn?"

There was nothing that would have stopped Varric from following the pair out onto the balcony and there was nothing surprising about Leliana trailing behind him, not with the devious little smirk Josephine had aimed at them, succesfully piqueing their interests so thoroughly. It really was a sight to behold, watching the usually cool and collected former Knight Captain bumbling around with two left feet.


"Are you positive that it is imperative to preform this many dips consecutivly ?" Cullen asked and Varric muffled his snicker with a good swallow of brandy. "I don't see the rest of the men doing this, after all."


Josephine smiled up at him and fluttered her eyelashes innocently. "That's because they are all amatuers my dear man. If you really want to impress her, the dips are necessary."


Leliana giggeled beside him and he glanced up at her as he swireld the amber liquid around his tumbler. "I never knew that Scribbles could be so... devious," he observed. "I don't think that the Makers Gift to Woman and Men alike will appreciate her instruction by the end."


Cullen twirled Josephine, faster and faster at her command until she stumbled and fell into him, her hands catching his shoulders in her grip to steady herself. "That was perfect," she exclaimed brightly.


"Oh come now Varric, it's all in good fun, no?" Leliana said as she observed her fellow advisors make fools of themselves.

Josephine watched him stride across the room and tap the Inquisitors current dancing partner on the shoulder and she grinned, not even bothering to hide it this time. He took the Inquisitor in his arms, back straight as he pulled her firmly against him. They did look stunning together, she could admit that even if it was done a little begrudgingly. He slid his hand done the curve of her side until it came to rest lightly on the swell if the Inquisitor hip where he gave a small squeeze before leading her into the first steps of the dance. Josephine saw the little smile that formed on the Inquisitors lips as Cullen over-stepped and the toe of his boot landed on her dainty foot. His cheeks colored and the hand that he held at his partners hip clenched slightly. They spun and twirled their way between the dancing couples, the occasional mis-step on Cullen's part but nothing truly horrendous.


Josephine crossed her arms over her breasts and tapped her fingers irritably on her ribs as the music came to an end and Cullen smoothly lowered the Inquisitor into a suprisingly graceful dip. She bristled, this was completly unfair, that man was unbelievable! He handed the Inquisitor graciously to the next noble awaiting her attentions after a parting whisper and almost swaggered his way back over to where she stood with an increasingly petulant look gracing her features.


"What in the void was that?" Josephine asked Cullen as he stopped beside her.


"Most tend to call that dancing. As I said, I am not as accomplished as most here but it seemed to accomplish its purpose."


"But you... you were horrid out on the balcony," she spluttered and he... chuckled? Cullen never chuckled!


"I am not so obtuse to be unable to identify the look of mischief in a woman's eyes."


Josephine scoweld up at him. "So, what did it accomplish? What did it all come to?" she asked and there it was, that blighted smug grin that she thought she'd been rid of.


"I stood on her feet, a lot. I will now be taking private dancing lessons with her every night that she resides within Skyhold. I should thank you. If you hadn't shown me how bad it could be I may never have gotten the gall up to cut in. "


Josephine's mouth fell open as Cullen pushed off the wall and made his way over to the servant that maned the beverages, Varric giving him a congratulatory pat on the arm as he passed. She had helped him, had given him the courage to ask the Inquisitor to dance after her ridiculous charade of a lesson. Maker, that man really could be quite infuriating.
