As for seeing a greater diversity in the NPC's you see around the game, I agree. And you will indeed see that in DAI. I'll point out, however, that we do not have every ethnic group in the real world represented in Thedas (as pointed out, Thedas is simply one continent), but we're endeavoring to make more visible the ones we do have.

It might also be that he's a younger son with nothing to really inherit so he was given to the chantry to make a living for himself without "burdening" the family with no land/titles for him

Seriously though, if he's from a noble background, it could be that his family (damn, there's one word to describe all of this but I can't remember it!  ) lost all their land, money and titles so they're just noble in name only. So he could really just be a farm boy or a Chantry boy with a fancy last name   Or a younger son with nothing to inherit, so he was signed up/was sent to the Chantry. Kinda like how in real life, way back in the day, the younger sons would join the clergy.

So you're thinking the crown may have stripped them of everything for some sort of slight maybe? Could be something like that or as @asperath stated he could be the second or third son. So much to speculate on!

Attainder... attainting... like Game of Thrones? I always imagined if Cullen was of noble birth he was either orphaned as a baby or suffered a fate similar to the Noble Origin story

I mean, Sebastian! But then again, being at the chantry did end up saving his life. Still though, who could "give him away" like some drab coat from 3 winters past that you don't need anymore because you're moving to Florida so you donate it to the Church? IF he was of noble birth, anyway.

Edit because Florida isn't in Thedas, Kelly. :/
