It just hurts to see him like that. He's crying there, poor thing. I want a mod to give him hugs after we rescue him. And after he takes a bath.

He obviously got better while he was in Kirkwall. But I agree, I hope they didn't ignore that experience, and it will eventually come back to bite us in the ass when we least expect it.

I made myself watch this vid again and I just bawled. :crying: I had forgotten how heart wrenching his voice is there. I can't... I need to eat choco for these feelings. I just know he is going to make me cry in DA:I when he tells his story and how he is doing. Ow, my heart.

And thanks LolaLei for the invite :D

Am I the only one that is looking forward to hearing Cullen sing to the inquizzy?

No you're not, though I don't know if he will be singing to the quizzy. I always pictures it as him singing the chant of light or something.

I'm looking forward to it. I don't mind hanging around a Chantry to hear it. <3

Some modders restored it for the Cullen romance mod, lemme see if I can find the video... aha! Ok from 3:31:

<snip>

"When you knew me, I was an innocent. I wanted to be a Knight, but I never really thought about why we were needed. Now, my eyes have been opened. The naivete I once had is gone forever. But I welcome the change as long as it helps me better serve the Chantry. You are a mage and I, a Templar. It is my duty to oppose you and all you are."

You know this gets me thinking. What do you think the starting point would be for the writer? Do you think they would consider these unused bits to also be 'canon'?

Yeah, it's a private group I made for when the game comes out. It's so we can hide in there from any big spoilers... we also use it when the thread gets flash mobbed by trolls, lol.

Oh Lola I couldn't help but laugh at that. Hunkering down in our safe room with our hands over our eyes. It brought back a lot of........... images

I'm not sure, I suppose it depends on whether she wanted to come up with something from scratch or consider the unused bits of dialogue because it felt fitting? If it does turn out that he joined because he wanted to be a Knight then it could just be a coincidence.

... I'm actually starting to think that maybe Cullen isn't a native Fereldan after all. I mean, obviously he sounds it because he was stationed there for quite a while, but when Hawke says to him "you sound Fereldan" he doesn't actually confirm that he is indeed from Ferelden, instead replying that he was serving there when Kinloch Hold was attacked.

I remember in his toolset it said he was Fereldan but those aren't supposed to be for us to see, so it doesn't really count as canon.

I'm quite excited to hear him singing in game. In reference to the earlier question about scent, I'd like to think he smelt like Hugo boss but that's because I have a weakness for that stuff.

Why wouldn't he be Fereldan, tho? I'm not sure we've seen something that points to that, unless you're thinking the (silly) lion helmet thing is connected to Orlais somehow?

I dunno. It just seems like a leap to me, but sure, the writer could do what she wants. I would love for her to pull out that little bit about always wanting to be a knight, tho. It just fits so well with an awakening-type story where his ideals and principles have constantly been challenged and now, yet again, he realizes how idealized some of those principles were. I can't wait to talk with him about where he currently is with his views on the Templar Order and the "need" for knights. Particularly if they're running around the Fereldan countryside accosting anyone with a long sticky thing that looks a little bit like a staff (finally watching the E3 demo).

You've got me thinking about it now too.

I wonder if she had complete free rein or was told "this is where we would like to head, make it work" or if they had certain expectations with certain events etc.

I could see a young Cullen been stationed in Ferelden or even sent there as a boy for training. Do we even know his age in which he joined the templars as a recuit? is there an age restriction?

EDIT: I was thinking they could join quite young (like 10yrs), at least that was my impression I got from Alistair. Maybe I was way off?

I dunno, I'm just tossing theories around. I just keep wondering why a lion, of all things? It's very un-fereldan!

... I'm kinda pondering about how much of his character/personality we guessed/theorised/canoned correctly, and how much was completely off the mark, lol. For years we/I was certain about the few aspects of his character that we did know, for example he's Fereldan, he's a Templar, he was tortured, he second guesses himself a lot, etc. And although I had hoped we'd get him as a companion/LI I never thought we'd actually get to the point where he'd be implemented into the game with a major role, let alone as a romance... and now he is. Which is great! But after seeing these new pictures and reading the interview etc I'm thinking that maybe he won't be anything like I/we thought he'd be.

Not that I'm complaining, I'm just curious to see just how different (or similar) he is to our head canons.

Ahh... I've got so much stuff to do today and this thread is so time consuming. But there are some ponts I wanted to address.

First of all: Welcome back, Eric. I missed the party but I hope there is some shortbread left ('cause Shortbread could be my only food source and I still wouldn't get tired of it).

Secondly: So, he does have a surname. Interesting.

j8ffvm.jpg

So, his name is not Cullen Cullen. Or just Cullen. I was hoping that Cullen was the "Cher" of Thedas, lol! *prays to the Maker that his name is not Cullen Edwards

I'm in the right mood to joke around a bit. So, what if we would all guess his last name :D ? I'm going with Cullen Griffin.

I tweeted Cullen's writer and asked if there was some sort of story purpose or symbolism for the lion helmet, or if it was just purely for aesthetics.

I started with my fanfiction for the 3000 pages celebration (which I will probably not finish in time considering how speedy the threads moves ;) ) and thought about the same. Personally, I think it's symbolic. Here is what I found yesterday:

"In the realm of  spirit animals, the lion wins the prize for most relentless fighter in the face of life challenges. The lion spirit animal represents courage, strength in overcoming difficulties. The presence of this power animal could also mean that something “wild” or difficult to control is happening. As such, lions symbolizes emotions that are difficult to manage, such a anger or fear."

Link

Hmmmmmmm i wonder if Brianne is scared of us o3o

Cullenites may appear as a bit too much sometimes and I mean this in the nicest way possible. But we are a very vocal group. LOL.

I was thinking...

Maybe after the game comes out, we could send an e-thank you card/actual thank you card to the Bioware team? If so, it'd probably be easier to send an e-thank you card rather than a physical one (since I dunno how that would work. We send it to each other, add our things and then send it off to the next person? Scan stuff on? How do people usually do this? :?), but if you guys would prefer to send a physical one, I live in Edmonton, and I've been to Bioware. I could drop it off.

This! I think it's an awesome idea. And to have something that you can really hold in your hands sounds so much better than the digital version. Here is how it could work: I did something similar once and people were sending me all their stuff via snail mail. I went to a print store at the end and had everything bound as a book. An alternative could be to scan things and to send them via mail to one person who takes of the whole thing. Of course, we could also form a chain letter. It's less work that way. Anyway, I love the idea. (Of course, I'm saing that now. If I don't enjoy the game I might be less enthusiastic but even then I think hard work should be appreciated.)

Yeah, it's a private group I made for when the game comes out. It's so we can hide in there from any big spoilers... we also use it when the thread gets flash mobbed by trolls, lol.

Oh... I was wondering about what happened to the Knight-Captain-Cullen-group since the forum moved. I did a search the other day and nothing came up. I was going to suggest to create a new group here, but the problem took care of itself now.  I was a member of the old group and would love it if you could add me to the new one as well. Pretty please :crying: ?

I asked Brianne if she got any notes about Cullen's past from his previous writers, and she said:
@bbattye: @Galagraphia I got to fill in information on Cullen's past. Of course, there are always peer reviews so the process is never in a vacuum.
@bbattye: @Galagraphia And the writers can ask each other "what do you think of this?" or "what if I did this?" and start a discussion.
Looks like she mostly wrote everything herself, but I don't know about that part. It was cut out, but it was so in character for Cullen, that I always considered it canon. Well, he definitely wanted to be a knight. Unlike Alistair. =] He wouldn't have achieved so much if he didn't want to do it.

Oooh, it certainly works with his story arc so far. I wonder if maybe that's why they specifically picked a lion for him? After all, the companions clothing is supposed to be an extension of their personality, so I don't see why the same principle wouldn't extend to the advisors as well. For ages I wondered what the deal with his fluffy fur stole was, now I know it's supposed to be part of the lion mane when he wears the helmet!

I like that he appears to still be wearing parts of his Templar armour though, perhaps that's symbolic of the fact that he's not quite let go of the past yet... after all, in the interview it does say that he's still processing and coming to terms with the fact that the Templar Order ultimately failed to protect not only the mages but the people of Thedas and as such he takes his new job very seriously, and expects a lot of himself and the Inquisition.

I wonder what's on his shield? Is that going to have a lion on it as well? Lol.

I was just looking at the big picture of his helmet (hur hur) and I noticed something take a look at this:

For reference, this is what the helmet looks like without his face in it... albeit it badly cut out in mspaint, LOL!:

It's funny that Cullen is a lion, because he never seemed to me like the type who loved such fancy stuff  Maybe I was wrong, and he loves luxury, nice shiny things, and he and Morrigan develop a friendship based on their passion for jewellery  I'm kidding. But seriously, can't wait to find out about the reason why he's a lion.

Is that the flaming sword of the Templars on his sword? He still using his old Templar sword? Maybe the Lion is representative of his position in the Inquisition. Good eye :D

I have a mental image of him being backed into a corner by Josephine, Leliana, Vivienne and Dorian as they tear his wardrobe apart. "What not to wear--Thedas style!"
