No kidding. I'm already overpondering the fact that he has a last name, but they're not telling us. Or rather, I'm overpondering what it all means! *Snicker*

Well you are doing better than those of us that are over-pondering his glove

Him having a last name could amount in endless possibilities of his life before becoming a Templar rather than just a few, very intriguing.

I'm quite looking forward to the idea of Cullen being there from the beginning, the very minute Cassandra drags our arse into the Inquisition. I wonder if she'll interrogate us with Leliana, Josephine and Cullen?

Cassandra: "You'll tell us EVERYTHING you know!"

Protagonist: "... Pfft, I'll only talk to the pretty one"

*Leliana steps forward*

Protagonist: "No, no. The other pretty one!"

*Josephine steps forward*

Protagonist: "Maker, what is this? Thedas' next top model?! Lemme speak to the hot guy with the fluffy outfit!"

So am I. I'm running multiple scenarios from he is Orlesian to he is a noble to he has elven blood and from Emprise du Lion  My brain will not stop. Now it is trying to remember everything I can about armor >.< DOOOOOMM

Cullen is from an Orlesian noble family from Emprise du Lion except that one of his parents is Elvish so he's a noble bastard and that's why he was sent to the Chantry as a baby to become a Templar. The thing we're trying to figure out on his gauntlet is actually an armour ring that was left in his basket as a baby, and it has his last name inscribed on it.  :D  :P  Am I helping?

EDIT: Top of the page!

Pfft, what regular lions?

You could actually be onto something there you know..... his helm looking like a Komainu. It could fit into his redemption arc, becoming a guardian/protector rather than an oblivious jailer  ;)

Tinfoil hat time!!

While I do love me some komainu and other Chinese/Japanese mythology, I will have to side eye Cullen if that helmet IS supposed to be a komainu. Cullen, pls. Leave the Chinese/Japanese cultural stuff to either Jade Empire or when an Asian race is introduced into the world of Dragon Age.

He already has me side eyeing him over the possibility a Ferelden might be running around in lion garb. (Unless Cullen ends up like Aveline or something, and, while born in Ferelden or moved there at a very young age, he's actually from Orlais.)

I don't know about one of his parents being elven simply because they are doing that with Alistair already. I mean, it's not off the table but I'd be surprised if that was his parentage.

That's a little too close to Alistair's past, but I like the idea that it's a ring that he's kept with him since he was tiny and is literally all that he has left of his family before they were all brutally murdered in "the game" (damn those Orlesian nobles!) He wasn't allowed to wear it openly whilst he was still in the Order, so he wore it on a chain around his neck underneath his armour, but now that he's part of the Inquisition he can wear it on show.

... I have way to much time on my hands.

Admittedly if he's too special snowflake, I'll lose some interest in him. Seeing his story is focused on what happens AFTER he joins the Templars, I kind of hope he's from a normal as dirt family that had no issues whatsoever. Just so there's more emphasis on his growth/what he's been through as an adult than on where he came from.

If his story gets TOO brutal, he runs the risk of being Gary Stu'd something fierce.

On the screenshot where badass Cullen raises his sword, you can see that his pauldrons are asymmetrical, but on his throne room pictures they look symmetrical. Maybe the armor was just mirrored for pretty shots, and his gauntlets are asymmetrical as well? But I think it's just a normal gauntlet. This is how I see it (sorry for the quality, I'm on the bus)

My theory however is that's the ribbon from my Inquisitor's hair, because Cullen's happy face tells me he's getting some love regularly

I was joking. :P Mix ALL the theories together! *puts on tinfoil hat*

Hmm. Thinking on it more, I don't think that he's a noble, or former noble, even if he has a last name. I mean, Aveline took on her husband's last name, and as far as we know, Wesley wasn't a noble before becoming a Templar, right?

unless all the Templars in Ferelden are secretly nobles/former nobles... o.O

Ahahaha yeah it really wouldn't make any sense but you never know in this crazy world. I think there is a possibility of him not being a Ferelden native though I did always like the idea of him being a good ol' Ferelden boy that wanted to breed mabari pups in his twilight years ^_^

*Inquisitor 'n' co all in the war room*

Inquisitor: *Staring off into space*

Cullen: "... uh... are you going to start the meeting?"

Inquisitor: "Huh? Oh! Sorry, I was just admiring the view!" *Gives all the companions and advisors a wolf whistle* "Looking goooood!"

Well, if you look at this picture:

Spoiler

You can see that his pauldrons are actually asymmetrical. And if you compare the two pictures (the one where he's wearing the lion helmet, and the one without), you can also see that he's basically in the same pose for both of them, so I am guessing that you are right and that the shots were just mirrored. So perhaps the armour on his arms is different on both sides? Maybe he's only got the one gauntlet left over from his Templar armour? Or his other gauntlet was damaged really badly, and when it was repaired it was also modified differently. Hence the different pauldrons. I would say that the pointier pauldron might be for when he needs to tackle people, but you'd think that would be on his right side instead if that were the case.

I do have a thing for them Ferelden boys.

Including my Hawke.

I will be a little sad if the Inquisitor-- at least the human Inquisitor-- isn't Ferelden. I just need Ferelden in my life. I want the option to make fun of accents like Hawke did in MotA. I will miss Hawke so much. So, so much.

Oooh, it certainly works with his story arc so far. I wonder if maybe that's why they specifically picked a lion for him? After all, the companions clothing is supposed to be an extension of their personality, so I don't see why the same principle wouldn't extend to the advisors as well. For ages I wondered what the deal with his fluffy fur stole was, now I know it's supposed to be part of the lion mane when he wears the helmet!

I like that he appears to still be wearing parts of his Templar armour though, perhaps that's symbolic of the fact that he's not quite let go of the past yet... after all, in the interview it does say that he's still processing and coming to terms with the fact that the Templar Order ultimately failed to protect not only the mages but the people of Thedas and as such he takes his new job very seriously, and expects a lot of himself and the Inquisition.

Good catch. At first I thought the stole was made out of feathers but now I think that you are spot on with your fluffy mane. It makes total sense that the lion part of his armour and his old templar armor represent aspects of two worlds, his old life and his new one as the advisor.

I wonder what's on his shield? Is that going to have a lion on it as well? Lol.

I was just looking at the big picture of his helmet (hur hur) and I noticed something take a look at this:

[...]

That was lion statue in the background! I couldn't make out the shape. LOL.

His glove? Don't forget there was that screen shot of a Keep being restored and they were building a big ass lion for it. The one with IB in the foreground.

Spoiler

So yeah I'd say its got to do with the Inquisition. The lion is the symbol of the military branch.

Wow, I haven't noticed that before. That is one big ass lion. But it wouldn't rule out the possibility that Cullen's lion helmet has some symbolic meaning as well. What I posted earlier fits too well with his personal background IMHO.

Do you guys think that fur around his neck is soft? Like soft enough for it to be enticing to snuggle your face in?  ^_^

If it's soft, do you think that on nights when Cullen is working late at his desk, he falls asleep and leans his head on the fur? Portable pillow!
