I think it's because people had the option to kill Fenris or not recruit him if they didn't like him. There's nothing they can do about Cullen. Apparently some of the epilogues of DA:O paint Cullen as a crazy mage-killer too, and some people fixate on that as well.
The slideshows at the end of DAO are all messed up though, and it was said a long time ago that they were only "rumors". 
I just think people pick their favorites, then bash on all the others. Oh well.

Lawyer. Although I might be slightly biased in that I'd want to him to be a lawyer because lawyers have to talk a lot and I'd want to hear Cullen talk a lot... >.>
In all seriousness though, not a lawyer. Probably something in civil service, like cop, or army.

I think Cullen's an awesome character and I think that generally the reasons for disliking him are quite petty/close-minded when we look at the big picture, but everyone is different
Yeah I generally avoid haters. But unfortunately, when you've been in a fandom as long as I have, you have friends who were Alistair fans in DAO, which is why we are friends. Then they go the opposite in the next game, etc. So sadly I have to see it a lot. (Not that you guys are disrespectful about it ilu)
And I really hate it when people are hating on any of the DAI characters yet, we don't know crap about them. Even though Cullen is not necessarily new, we don't know a lot about him, either.

You know how Hawke has casual clothes put on when at home? If there is something like that in Inquisition, why not a casual hairstyle too? Like in CC, make let out hairstyles for at the keep or whatever. Long hair is problematic wearing armor, so I get not having it in combat situations.
Also still hoping the hair/face textures are better, and the hair meshes actually fit the head mesh. Just sayin.

Oh a more serious note regarding Cullen...
So I'm playing DA2 right now, and just spoke to him in Act 2 (for the first time, I've played this game 10000 times and never spoken to him where not required) I hear so many people say he really pissed them off in DA2. I really don't understand. I tend to play pro-mage characters myself, though this one is pro-templar. He's just doing his duty, but you can already tell he's having doubts about Meredith. He's a templar, he has had certain beliefs drilled into him, no doubt.
Some of the other pro-templar characters in this game are far worse. Why did he "****** them off" in DA2?
Edit: and why the heck did it blank out one of my "pissed" but not the other? O_o
I'm late, but more than likely he pisses them off because:
1. he's the Templar that takes away their precious booboo Bethany, nevermind he was completely civil and polite and professional about it.
2. he's one of the only Templars that dares to say magic is dangerous (which it is *gasp*) and there's no option to kill him.
3. he calls aggressive Hawke out on his sh!t at least once, and you know how people despise when characters don't bow at their feet.
Edit: Note, there ARE legit reasons to dislike his character! The people I've seen LOUDLY RAGE, however, don't tend to argue legit reasons. Those arguments come from quieter discussions/people that don't troll and throw hate around, including towards the fans. Usually?
