I think you've hit the nail on the head.Usually mixing sexuality and a child-like personality can provoke a pretty strong reaction in people but the disconnect between one party seeing Cole one way and another seeing him differently creates an inherent inability to relate to one another but the nature of what some might see as an exploitative relationship makes it impossible for them to accept that some people will just like what they like and move on. It might be part of the tensions surrounding Cole here on the forums.
I'm of the opinion that if Merrill, an elf, can have her behavior explained as "culture shock" and still be appropriate for a sexual relationship, then Cole, a spirit, is experiencing "culture shock" as well (though I'll certainly grant his is a more extreme case)
I know Cole isn't a romance, and I'm fine with that. I didn't expect him to be one. I'm also not interested in romancing a twelve-year-old human boy. I would be interested in a romance with a spirit. Cole is just not a good choice for a romance plot because everyone assumes he and the human boy Cole are one and the same.
