Usually mixing sexuality and a child-like personality can provoke a pretty strong reaction in people but the disconnect between one party seeing Cole one way and another seeing him differently creates an inherent inability to relate to one another but the nature of what some might see as an exploitative relationship makes it impossible for them to accept that some people will just like what they like and move on. It might be part of the tensions surrounding Cole here on the forums.

I'm of the opinion that if Merrill, an elf, can have her behavior explained as "culture shock" and still be appropriate for a sexual relationship, then Cole, a spirit, is experiencing "culture shock" as well (though I'll certainly grant his is a more extreme case)

I know Cole isn't a romance, and I'm fine with that. I didn't expect him to be one. I'm also not interested in romancing a twelve-year-old human boy. I would be interested in a romance with a spirit. Cole is just not a good choice for a romance plot because everyone assumes he and the human boy Cole are one and the same.

Yet when someone writes fic where some magic is discovered and her body aged to full maturity in order to match the outside with what is within so they can have her romanced by some other vampire they created, the commenters go ape-sh!t. Cole may very well not be the same as that boy. I really don't think we will know until later. But for those who choose to see a more adult possibility, I'm not about to judge them and start screaming at them about how wrong it is. If the devs come out and say "Yeah, Cole is basically still twelve in body, mind and spirit" well THEN I might silently side eye someone who still fervently wants to tap that. But, like with Merrill, it's not my place to make someone see her the way I do and neither is it so for Cole. And frankly, I have no issue with people who do romance Merrill. She's legally an adult. *I* may not be able to see her in a romantic way but that's on me and my preferences. Those who do aren't romancing a kid because Bioware didn't make her a kid so I have no issue with it. I just really think the psuedo-pedo-police need to chill. Or go find actual pedo-media to rage against.

Word of Gaider is that Cole is mentally a child and shouldn't be a romance. He also said, though, that he could have easily been outvoted when it came to 'who will be a romance'. I doubt Cole will be a romance option, though. What Mr. Weekes described about Cole seems pretty consistent with Mr. Gaiders ideas of him.

I won't lie, I don't want him to be. He does just come across as young, naive and in need of guidance to me. I know Gaider also went on in the Cole thread to say that in his opinion Cole would not be capable of understanding the idea of consent which would have been a huge "back away slowly" for me even if I hadn't already thought he was too young sounding

My thing with Cole is that if he is mentally capable enough to be sent in to fight (as a companion), to murder people and kills demons, then he is old enough (or should be) to not be considered "mentally a child." Because sending a child to do those things is not okay either. But that's all I'll say because this is the Cullen thread. x3

 

I wonder if we will be seeing that Greg Ellis video on an upcoming Friday? Or if it will be just a nice surprise on any random day.

I think that we have to take into account that a) he isn't human, he's already an accomplished killer with supernatural abilities so I don't think we can really compare the two. You don't have to have a theory of mind, or emotional intelligence in any context to be able to kill- to kill is a basic instinct of most lifeforms. The act of sex as we would frame it is one tied up with emotions and social constraints and is therefore conceivably a more difficult concept. But that's just my opinion.

 

I have no idea when we'll see that video but I know it will be a day of great joy

I wasn't saying that he wouldn't be able to kill, I said it wouldn't be okay. That's like a child soldier; kids should not be sent to kill. I agree that he may not understand the concept of sex and or may not have any interest (because he is a spirit demon thingy) in which case I don't support any romance. But comparing him to an actual child state of mind is not the same as having naivety. ^-^ (So I think we agree to some point? xD) Okay. But now I'll actually stop!

 

I really hope they don't scrap it! I don't think they will be but I am so impatient, the anticipation is killing me. I want to swoon over Greg Ellis! ;c

I'm not eager to get involved in the Cole debate, but to help out a bit:

What does that matter? Physically, Cole is an adult. Mentally, he is not. He does not understand sex, much as a child would not, and this is explicitly stated in the book.

 

Yeah, one should not really equate naiveté (or whatever other personality characteristics you consider immature) with Cole. It's explicitly stated that Cole sees people in the tower having sex, and doesn't understand it--there's no concept of arousal, not to mention the social under-development he otherwise displays.

If that doesn't impact you, and you really think you could "teach" him to understand these things... ummm, okay. Shine on, you crazy diamonds.
