Yeah, that part is the dodgy bit. Headcanon it out is what I do. I do it in real life too, might be a tad unhealthy, but still. I have similar problems with Leliana and her life as a bard. But I never romance her as a male Warden anyway, just becomes the story of a wayward girl, an evil lesbian and a magical penis otherwise. Bit like Jack in that respect.

Going from straight to gay happened to me over the course of a week so I don't see why Cullen can't change over a couple years
The way I see it, it's entirely possible for anyone to fall for the same or opposite gender, regardless of whether you define yourself as straight or homosexual. Sometimes all it takes is that one person to bring out feelings you never knew you had.

Sadly, no girl will ever make me feel that way. That's okay though.
I would love to see someone have to give reasons for being straight for once... that might be an eye opener...
On a less joking note though, I completely agree with your sentiments. Why should they even have to explain themselves? If they're romancing you (and you're playing the same sex), it's pretty obvious that they're into you... regardless of gender. Yeesh.
It would be nice if there wasn't a need for it but...
I think in the game, they wanted to give the players a ... heads up about the dialogue they were choosing, that it would begin a same sex romance. Since the majority of gamers are hetero-normative, it only makes sense for the devs to "warn" players, so to speak. With Zevran it wasn't terribly obvious. My husband romanced him by accident. lol! 
So I think it's a reflection of our society, to be honest. In this day and age, it's still unusual for a person to have someone of the same gender come onto them. And it's even more unusual to have a person you like, reply that they too like you. Such exchanges could get ugly if they admitted their attraction to the wrong person. But it's better to be clear from the off so you don't go too far down that road, thinking it's all good only to alienate your friend later because they found out you have the hots for them. So I don't agree that anyone should have to explain their orientation but I do think we're at a point in our evolution that stills needs it to prevent misunderstandings. Otherwise, most people will just assume everyone is like them. Which completely undoes the progress of fostering open minds. IMHO, of course.

Well, I say bi, but really I'd say open minded. I prefer men but I've found women attractive too... Lord knows I've kissed enough of them.

Trust me, it's not gonna happen lol And believe me, I've thought about and explored sex and gender a lot. I've learned interesting things about myself over the past few years. But one thing that's solid is I don't see women that way, ever. Not even a little bit.

Thanks for these! Re-reading them, it does look like he was saying the Crows picked him BECAUSE he was bi, not that the Crows MADE him bi. Which is much better.
I dunno... Zev, for his chatty-ness, seems to keep his deepest secrets under wraps. He was raised in a ****** house and sold. Not exactly the kind of life where one has much choice, I think. To my interpretation, he deferred to it by mentioning the Crows' preference for open-mindedness after having mentioned that the Crows were interested in buying him since he was young. In a world where the sale of a person is an every day thing, I don't see how he had much choice. Calling sex "practical" and open-mindedness an asset in performing "practical" tasks still screams abuse to me. But that's me. But I think I'll just put my Negative Nancy away for now. Don't like being the wet blanket at a picnic.
I mean if they do FF next Friday, that means part of the character discussion the following week will be in May. Which isn't exactly "one every month."

Very eloquently worded. You are right... it would be nice if it wasn't needed, but I understand why it is.
I am very lucky to live in a place where couples of all sexualities are welcome and common, as well as work in a position where I interact with people of ranging tastes. I sometimes forget (priviledge!) that in the greater scheme of things we still have to give some guidance.
And obviously, as you say, I am also guilty of "assum[ing] everyone is like [me]!" So oops!

Tentatively thinking I identify as Demisexual here, which is why you always see me talk about the characters in an aesthetic way or like I'm regarding people from a design point of view. And why I don't consider the characters playersexual as such? To me Anders seems like he's bi, Isabela is pansexual, and Merril and Fenris maybe demisexual.
