Well, what I personally like about him is, his bravery, courage, and the fact that his character is so adaptable. Picking up from where DA2 left off, the writers can basically do whatever they want with Cullens character. He's like play-doh. It comes in a basic shape, but it's just waiting to be molded.

All side characters are like "play-doh", it just happens this dude gets picked. He was a nobody in Origins and 2.

I don't understand why people even like this guy, he is dull and bland.

I can't believe this dude will be a party member, what a waste. Seriously, what is so interesting about this guy?

He's not a party member.

Well, you're in luck! We do indeed have an actual bonafide (and boneable amiright) Qunari on the team! His name's the Iron Bull. There's a fan thread in this subforum if you're interested in his character (dude seems really cool, and I can't wait to get him in the party)

I'm... not entirely certain what you mean about Kaiden 2.0, however. I've never done that romance, so, uh, could you perhaps explain?

The bull is not a member of the Qun.

A Qun advisor would be far more interesting. He/she would have the mindset of the Qun therefore their advise would be incredibly interesting in what their mentality is in leading and how they deal when in a position where they have to make a choice. And that's just from the top of my head.

Why would you want Kaiden 2.0?

There are better opputunities for characters and what ever the word is, advisor? But they had to bring him back? A Qunari in the Qun himself would be far more interesting, give advice on how the Qun lead etc.

I wonder what you want? People like different things and you have to seem to made up your mind that Cullen isn't intresting character, to me he's but I wonder if you are even intrested of knowing why? ^^;

Also to me he isn't like Kaidan, intresting that you see those two as similar characters.

Iron Bull was formerly of the Qun.

Not quite the same as currently of the Qun.

Also why do characters that we know little about have fan threads?

I get fan threads for characters in released games, but unreleased games?

Don't get me wrong. Freddy Prinze Junior is a fantastic actor. His charm made those tiresome 90's rom-coms bearable.

His James Vega was an awesome addition to Shepard's crew.

This Iron Bull character sounds promising. Really promising. He could be an awesome character.

However I don't really know if Iron Bull will live up to the hype. He could be bland and disappointing.

Too early for a fan thread I say.

At least with Cullen we've seen him and interacted with him in two games.

But that's just me.

OT, but in the spoiler, is that the groom from Outlast: Whistleblower??

YES. XD

Iron Bull is a part of the Qun, he is Ben-Hassrath. I'd rather have him in my party rather than an adviser because holy hell he sounds hilarious. And I am certain he will be more than happy to tell you about the Qun.

Yes, advisor. And no, I don't think there would be better opportunities because Cullen has been in the thick of it for the past two games - he knows what he's talking about and speaks from experience.

Kaiden 2.0? Sounds saucy. Rawr. Do we at least get an ass-shot too?

I don't quite understand what you are getting at here. I don't see how that's at all a bad thing. What about Isabela? She was a 30second fling. By your standards "A nobody" Then, she became a companion, with a complicated backstory, and a full romance sub-plot. What about Merrill? She was a side character, only encountered if you play a certain origin. Then, she also became a companion with a backstory and romance sub-plot. These so called "Nobodys" became so so so much more that that. And so can Cullen.

Well, then maybe Inquisition will give us the chance to make him a somebody.

If he was a nobody in Origins and 2, then he's roughly the same place as a brand new character who are effectively nobodies before you meet them as well.

Isabela was indeed in Origins for a very short time period then they brought her back in DA2 with a complicated backstory.

They are doing the same with Cullen.

Kaidan can sometimes be used as a derogatory term for characters that one finds uninteresting.

I can't read Naughty Bear's mind, but he/she could just be saying that he/she finds Cullen dull (a point that I disagree with).

Naughty Bear may not necessarily believe that the two characters are similar.

Personally I think both Kaidan and Cullen are interesting well written characters. Only the latter suffers from lack of screen time.

Hmm? No, the Bull is part of the Qun.

Qunari are known across Thedas as the brutal horned giants who descended from the north to nearly conquer the continent. These ruthless followers of a harsh philosophy enforce their will through the Ben-Hassrath: their spies and secret police. One brilliant agent did it all, hunting spies, rebels, and deserters until the day he finally broke. To preserve a valuable asset, his superiors sent him to Orlais to observe and report… and The Iron Bull was born.

Today, Bull’s Chargers are famous mercenaries, fiercely loyal to the huge Qunari warrior who leads them into battles and taverns with equal enthusiasm. The Iron Bull still sends the Ben-Hassrath reports, but years of living outside Qunari rules have him wondering which identity is really him. Whoever he is, he’s more than happy to join the Inquisition and get paid to kill demons.

SOURCE

So, he'll have that Qun mindset you're looking for. Perhaps you'll even be able to push him to go more towards the Qun. As for a Qunari advisor, mmmm... that would be a hard sell, I think. Especially since the Qunari don't really seem to make choices--they have the Qun, and they do what the Qun demands of them, and only when it demands it of them. The Inquisition, however, comes from Chantry roots, so it makes sense that the main pillars of its foundation come from within the Chantry.

Being sold for a camel/goat/cow isn't a complicated backstory.

Merrill was a more than just a side-character, she was albeit had a very minor role in the plot.

Cullen was a dude who stood in the hallway and then doing the same thing later on, but not on his own will.

That is an epic rebuttal. :wizard:

But there is this one thing that really bugs me.

What tune are you whistling?

Cullen's role in DA2 was roughly equal to Merrill in DAO, if not bigger.

So you're saying being sold by her own mother to a man that used her as a sex toy every night is not a complicated backstory.

Nope.

I suppose we'll have to agree to disagree then. Hopefully DAI will give you a reason to like Cullen. Especially since I think we're stuck with him throughout most of the game.

I guess there's a bit of a preset prejudice against him that probably has nothing at all to do with Cullen. We see a lot of characters pulled in. I was halfway expecting Herron to be a party member this time around. ;) So when people who, perhaps, already don't like the attention surrounding him think about his history, I'm sure they simply forget the fact that a large majority of characters come back again.
