My ideal would be for Cullen to mention (only in an Amell/Surana import, obviously, and perhaps only to a mage Inquisitor?) who is pursuing him that she reminds him of someone he had feelings for long ago.

 

This is 100% a matter of taste so I'm not arguing with you, to be clear... but this would not be my preference. I'd rather Cullen love or not love my Inquisitor on her own merits without feeling he has to compare her to a past crush/lover/whatever. I feel like my Inquisitor should be important enough to have a role in Cullen's life that has nothing to do with Amell/Surana, so I could really do without the perceived similarity.

 

(It's also quite possible the Inquisitor is totally different from Amell/Surana in looks, personality, and conduct, in which case the comparison would seem like a huge stretch.)

 

As I said, just taste, but mine is different.

Bioware has an internal chart of who is romanceable by whom, but it hasn't been released to the fans. Many of us would like it to be.

I'm not even romancing Cullen, and I don't want him to mention Amell/Surana (how would the game pick which one?). I'd actually like for him to fall for one of the companions or advisers. I'd like to see the guy happy.

Lol, I still ship him with Dorian or Iron Bull. But, barring that, I think he would go well with Cass or Leliana.

I have a sneaking suspicion Cassandra and Cullen are going to hit it off and be the NPC couple in Inquisition.

I don't mind sharing Cullen in playthroughs where I'm not romancing him... but I'm a Cassandra/Regalyan fan. Oh no, look, another pairing that doesn't have ANY solid evidence, and happened over a decade ago! Clearly I need to get my romance priorities straight.

 

I think Cullen and Cass could work, yeah. (Although I admit I do kind of ship her with Galyan too.) If Cullen isn't interested in my Inquisitor, I'd like to see him happy with someone else, and I think Cassandra would be a good choice. My Inquisitor would painfully admit this too.

That's actually why I wouldn't consider my Inquisitor romancing Varric. She wouldn't want to either get in the way or be forever in Bianca's shadow.

I know nothing about Bianca, but I want to because of how much she affected Varric.

 

I really, really, really love Varric x Bianca. Now THAT'S carrying a torch. That must be some epic levels of love those two have for one another, and though I haven't read the comics, I know that there was a reason they were separated, and just the whole thought of it is cruel. I also am envisioning Bianca as being quite a tough person, bad ass really, I mean why else would he name his weapon after her? And I bet she can give as good as she gets, and I bet she just flusters the sh!t out of him, and it's the one time he doesn't always have a witty comeback.

Until very recently, I thought Bianca was just his bow. I wondered why some people wanted Varric to romance his weapon.

I'm torn between wanting the writers to address this, or just wanting them to forget it ever happened. 

 

Personally, I'd rather they just gloss over it. With a limited word budget for DAI, I don't want the writers to spend too much of the Cullen-related share of it trying to justify decisions from DA2 that were clearly just the result of lack of resources and a rushed development cycle.

 

My headcanon is that Cullen did eventually figure out Mage!Hawke was a mage but chose not to act on it because he had more pressing problems, and for me that's sufficient explanation.

My thing with a possible Varric romance is that I'd always feel like an also-ran. The woman the hero settled down with after the epic, tragic love story ran its course. Amell/Surana isn't a huge part of Cullen's character, so it's not a barrier.

I've always thought of it like this: you know how Fenris and Isabela hook up in Act 3 if you don't romance either of them? Well, in this case, the Inquisitor is the Isabela to Varric's Fenris. We're the NPC hook-up if the main romance doesn't flag. Bianca being Hawke, of course.

The analogy I use is that Bianca is Jack, Varric is Rose, and the Inquisitor is Calvert. Yeah, sure she was happy, but it's not the story we remember.
