Mortal
Disclaimers: I don't own any of these characters. Bioware does, and happy I am that they let me play in their sandbox! Also this is the initial idea of a very rough draft of thought. It will be expanded upon as more thoughts fly into this brain of mine.
The army moved as one. Left side to flank us. Right side to draw attention to the behemoths in the center. Maker, how could we stop a force such as this.
I glanced at Cullen. My heart swelled seeing him. Muttering a prayer to keep us safe, I turned to look at my other companions. It had been a hard road to get here.
"It will be fine. I can wager to cleave more demons in two than you," the Iron Bull goaded.
"That is a wager I wouldn't take friend, lest I chop my own leg off,"I replied. Sadly, broadswords did not make up any part of my bag of tricks.
"Move them out," I commanded to Cullen. "I will take the Iron Bull, Vivienne, and Cole to close the tear."
"As you wish. We will get through this, love." Cullen encouraged, in a weaker moment, no doubt. My small party moved off, as I waved to my companions left behind. With any luck we wouldn't meet resistance en route to the tear. Although, after the loss of a few friends, luck hadn't been with us, I reflected.
Deep breaths, use your training became a litany I held to as we moved past the bulk of the enemy. Deep breaths...deep breaths...
"Ahead. A group!" Iron Bull called out. It appeared they were already aware of us, Bull's shout notwithstanding. He did serve to pull me out of my reverie, however, and the battle was joined. Swordwork bordering on mystical from the Bull, Cole's daggers finding every soft spot, and huge gouts of flame from Vivienne made short work of the demon spawn.
"You seem distracted. Are you all right?" Cole's reedy voice shook me to my core. I wasn't. I was just me, a nobleman's daughter to be sure, but commanding an army and saving the world? This wasn't covered in etiquette training.
We carried onward towards the breach, and after what seemed like ages - surely the Dragon Age was over! - we arrived. I stared at the breach. Impossible! Of course, surviving the blast had been impossible too. I raised my hand. The breach began to shrink, slowly. It brought back the pain of falling out of the tear, being held in the fade by HER.
My companions started battle with the demonspawn that rose to protect the breach. I barely heard. I focused harder - just close you bloody bastard! Smaller, smaller.
"Their reinforcements are here! Prepare!" I heard Vivienne shout, though it sounded so far away. The sounds of battle continued.
"You need to hurry Inquisitor. Though I appreciate the chance to slay many a demon, we will be overrun shortly!" the Bull's shout reached me. I put everything I had into closing the tear between worlds. And finally! Finally, it began to shrink in earnest. After one final agonizing moment, the breach closed.
I collapsed. The final dwindling moments of battle around me faded. I felt arms life me as no more than a child's poppet. "We need to move now if we are to return. We will probably meet heavy resistance on the way down", the Bull said. It seems in addition to a fine warrior, he is also a soothsayer. There was at least one behemoth on the way back down. My strength gradually returning enough to walk, and with the wisdom to stay out of the way.
We returned to chaos. My army's position was backed up, with fighting on all sides. I searched frantically for someone, anyone. Cullen, or Varric, or Cassandra!
"This does not bode well, your Eminence. We should withdraw to a safer position." Vivienne advised. No coward she, but ever the practical one. I couldn't leave though. Not without my friends, and not without my love.
"There!" Cole drew my attention to the figure approaching on horseback.
"Cassandra!" I yelled. I started running towards her. "Cassandra! What's happened?"
"Inquisitor. We were pushed back. We are holding a new position strongly. Cullen ensured we will be victorious. He headed a charge that broke a flanking maneuver. We will win, but you must come now." she said, gently grabbing my hand.
At the mage's tent, I looked askance. She gestured me on, urgently. My stomach began to flutter wildly, as I went into the tent. The copper tang hit my nostrils almost immediately. Blood. A lot of it.
Dorian came to my side. "I tried everything, but it was too late. I fear I have only prolonged his pain. All I can offer now is the time to say good bye."
The tears started. Everything I had ever learned as a little girl out the window in an instant. I swallowed the lump in my throat and fell to my knees beside the cot. I reached, grabbed his hand and pulled it to my cheek.
"Don't cry love. I'm happy for all the time we've had. You made my life so full," his voice so weak. The tears started coming in earnest.
"I love you so much. Please don't go," I begged, even knowing the choice wasn't his to make. His hand fell limp in my own, and his eyes closed, and all I could do was lay my head on his chest and cry.
To be continued and expanded. I thought of this idea because I have a drawing that will be posted (also later), where this idea came from. Grammar and linguistical mistakes, message me! I suck at proofreading my own stuff.
