I imagine Meredith would say "Objection noted" and kill them. It takes her being clearly and obviously irrational to stand up to her forcibly. He'd be upset, but he still hasn't taken that last half-step. Not to mention that it's his view of the Rite that's unorthodox so other templars may not back him.

You're a star! I've been looking for that clip for ages! Cullen's face when they cut their heads off, he doesn't flinch (I guess he wouldn't because he's used to that sort of thing) but I love that they actually showed him looking sad/pained about it.

I've been looking on YouTube trying to find the scene in DA2 where Hawke actually has those 3 mages killed, I wanted to see the expression on Cullen's face when it happens but everyone who seems to have uploaded it all saved them, lol.
For some reason,my phone won't let me paste links from YouTube.
Search for dragon age 2:Hawke is a jerk and around 5min 15sec,you can see the scene with the mages and Cullen.

I guess it took seeing how far Meredith had gone to finally make him decide that enough was enough.
Perhaps it's just wishful thinking, or maybe I'm reading between the lines (it's hard to distinguish the two sometimes) but from reading his DAI character blurb and writer interview it seems like part of the reason he's taking his new job so seriously and is expecting a lot of himself is due to the guilt of failing people in the past. I like the idea of him trying to redeem himself for his past mistakes.
I do have a genuine concern that we'll meet Cullen in DAI and he'll have done all his healing and issue solving between games, leaving us with a confident man in a leadership position with no hang-ups or issues left for us to investigate... not that I want him to be an utter trainwreck, but I wouldn't want the events of DA2 and his past torture to be completely ignored in favour of this new BAMF.

Considering, how they all chicken out in the fight with Meredith, while Cullen is the only who stays to fight.Yeah,I agree that they probably wouldn't back him up.I imagine Meredith would say "Objection noted" and kill them. I needed a mental image of Cullen and Quizzy first kiss. Since we got a screen grab of a elven mage quizzy, I decided to try something using that as the "armor" Anyway, just gonna drop it off here. Fingers crossed for Greg Ellis' VO vid this week or I might keep drawing until my fingers fall off ![]()

Better picture of then new magic skill trees
Thought I'd put this here, since I find this fascinating. Source: dragonaging.tumblr.com
Evidently these trees are called, from left to right, Entropy, Discord, Discipline (and Knight Enchanter).
It seems pretty clear that lightning spells are now part of the Entropy tree, fire spells are part of the Discord tree, and cold spells are part of the Discipline tree. Earth spells are likely part of an unseen but analogous tree.
Personally I am very excited to have freedom in which elements I specialize in—earth/cold or lightning/fire mages are now more effective than in DA2, and so is the possibility of choosing to focus on only one element. On the other hand, it seems like elemental magic is basically unavoidable.
My apologies if this is already being discussed somewhere else, but this seemed like a good place to put it.

It's nice to think the elements would be in a separate tree. I think my elf would be partial to Earth or cold, personally.

I have always played the middle ground between mages and templars. In DA:O I wouldn't let the right of annulment happen and saved the mages yet I didn't grant the circle autonomy.
In DA:2 I have now sided with the templars just as many times as I have sided with the mages. I really don't know how I'm going to advance--all this indecisiveness is turning my brain to goo.

I am at an impasse--I have no idea how I'm going to proceed into DA:I concerning the choices I have made in DA:2.

I think the best you can do is wait until the game and then make your decisions based upon what you see. Trying to puzzle it through now is hard, because we don't all the circumstances of what is happening in DAI, particularly within the Hinterlands. We know nothing of the choices that we can make. And further, we don't even know if there is a middle ground for us to stand upon.

I don't think we can decide how we'll approach it until the situation is presented to us. For all I know, depending on how the conflict is presented, my pro-mage Inquisitors will take the Templars' side because it makes more sense or something.
Though they won't be getting play for quite a while. I have other character plans I'm more attached to that will be played first, and they happen to be for compromise for the most part. Which I guess will make the decision even more awkward for them if they HAVE to pick a side and neither look ideal. ![]()

I also have both mage & templar play throughs so I'm going to do both and see how differently they turn out. I'll probably do the mage one first.
Hit Save before I could add: I tried having the middle ground as much as possible, too. I'm somewhat of a diplomat in RL so that's sort of how it worked in game for me.. until I was forced to make a choice one way or the other, hence the mage/templar sided runs.
2nd edit: I found it annoying in DA2 when I couldn't keep to the middle ground. I didn't want to be put in the middle of that hot mess ![]()

When you guys input your decision from previous games into the keep what will be your canon play-through for DA:2--siding with the mages or templars? I also can't decide on what play-through for DA:2 I'm going to stick with for my canon play-through for DA:I. That's probably where most of my indecisions are.
I will only be importing the mage ending with DAI. Granted, I thought Meredith was an amazing character, far better than Orsino, but I couldn't justify helping her annihilate the Circle over what Anders stupidly did.

Mages, I'm pretty sure. I have gone back to DA:O and DAII so I have at least three 'canons' to work with, but I don't think any of those canons will side with the Templars, not unless I make that decision in the Keep while never playing through it. Narratively, I just have yet to come up with a character that would side with the Templars when it comes to that last decision.

I have this whole very involved "canon" I want to import for my first world state. But to answer your question, I'll be siding with the mages. My "canon" Hawke is a mage who had a bit of a savior complex regarding Anders, and I'm curious to see how her choices affect Thedas. ![]()

I wonder if whether or not you agreed with Anders will be a recognized choice within the world...

yeah, meredith is a great character. but i could not justify helping her either.
regardless, i don't think the whole mage/templar thing is gonna be all that important in dai. i mean it starts off at peace con, but Cam said the whole thing is settled very early in the game.
and that one mage..alexius..is just like what does it matter? the Elder One is coming. the Elder one is coming.

I kind of hope so, to be honest. I think that's a pretty big deal, and kind of changes what all of Thedas might think of Hawke, you know, if Hawke ever gets to say, "No, I think he's right."

and i think that's rather problematic. the game itself does not provide a solid reason in the end to side with the templars.
i mean, it's one thing to be pro-templar in a PT, but its another to cut down innocent ppl for something that you know damn well they didn't do.
i like diversifying my pt's, but for me it makes no sense in the end.

I think the M/T thing will be one of the arcs in the story, but not wholly related to the Main Plot.
