Y'know, I've been thinking about this.

Since we know very little about Cullen's family, there's an implication he may have been raised by the Chantry, due to his being such a strong believer in the Maker and the Chantry. He's also supposed to be at least thirty or so in Origins, so that would put his birth around the time that Ferelden's drove the Orlesians from Ferelden...

Coupled with his lion helm, something that's apparently a motif in Orlesian fashion, it makes me seriously wonder whether or not Cullen might be of Orlesian descent, one of the many war orphans left over from the rebellion? It'd definitely be a surprise to learn if he wasn't actually Ferelden, but Orlesian with a last name that was something along the lines of "Devereaux" or whatnot?

Granted, that's a lot of speculation based solely on why he's wearing that weird mask... he could have easily bought it in a jokeshop and his last name could be something as simple as "Mudd"?

Mmmm... Mudd... another dark horse in the running... :)

I'm curious why everyone is assuming the lion must be non-Ferelden? I know there's the whole Emprise du Lion (sp?), but at Ostagar in DA:O, Cailan's guards have two lions rampant (my heraldry isn't that great, but I can recognize a heraldic lion, at least) on their shields, and I believe the Cailan shield you can get in Return to Ostagar has the same device on it.

30 or so in Origins? I don't think that's correct as he was described as "young" quite often in the epilogues etc. It doesn't count for anything but his files pulled from the game listed him as 24 but that's just to guide the VO when voicing his lines. He's supposed to be in his late 20's to early 30's in DAI, however, I can't give you written/screencapped proof of this because I was told by a dev directly when I asked a while back when everything was still hush-hush.

Don't forget Dragon Age 2 took place over the span of 10 years...surely he would be late thirties/early forties?

Actually what got me thinking on those lines was was the Lion of Orlais shield and infamous "Golden Prince" who wore armour adorned with lions during the Summer Wars, suggesting that lions might be a motif in Orlais similar to Mabari's are within Ferelden  (or just that the Devereaux family that the Golden Prince belonged to wear that as their crest).

And Cailan's shield and heraldry are actually described as being two Mabari, it's just they have very long tails.

You'd think that, but apparently not. I guess he was supposed to be younger than he looked in DA:O... his DA:O model didn't really reflected that though, which is why he looked so much younger in DA2, lol.

Random thought inspired by DA:O re-play:

You know a little 'cameo' I wouldn't mind in DAI? Running into Ser Jory's wife and child. >:

Yeah, the DA:O models seemed a little over the place when it came to age, with even on the "youngest" settings most human males looking like they were at least 30, while most elven males tend to look like teenagers... and Wynne must have had some amazing moisturiser in the Circle, cause she didn't look like she was over 50 at all?!

If Cullen was supposed to be in his 20's, his model fitted far better in DA2. It could also explain why some people didn't like him in Origins, since they assumed his character was supposed to be older than he appeared? It's a little hypocritical of us because Alistair actually is thirty, but Cullen's not written as an eternal manchild, so his complaining if you constantly ignore his advice to annul the Circle comes across as sounding more immature and petulant?

Whereas his growth and maturity over the course of DA2 from someone in his early 20s to a seasoned Templar, fits him far more.

I thought Alistair is supposed to be about 20/21 in DA:O?

Anyway, I think people found Cullen's crush on the female mage to be creepy also (in part) due to his character model looking old as balls, lol! DA2 Cullen definitely looks like he's in his mid to late 20's, but his new model I can't really put a physical age on because he looks different in every bloody shot, LOL!

Mind you, Cole's VO is 28 and he looks older, but he sounds WAY younger.

No, that's the age given in the toolset. Originally, he was supposed to be this hardened war veteran who was probably 30 or so. That got changed. Since we now know that Fiona is his mother (and I'm not commenting on this any more), that would put Alistair's age in Origins at 19-20.

Um, to be fair he had a wife with a child on the way and was told to drink the blood of these monsters that he'd only ever seen poison and kill people. His reaction was completely understandable, in my eyes. o:

Wait, the wiki says that Alistair was born in 9:10, my bad.

It's confusing because I know there were some mix-ups about the timeline of his birth, the Calling, as well as Loghain's comments implying that Alistair was actually supposed to be older than Cailan was... but that might have been a left-over line from when he was meant to be an older Grey Warden as originally written?

Exactly this, I wouldn't call him a coward - just someone who got too caught up in the 'glory' of being a Warden, without actually thinking about what it means.  So I would say he was a bit on the stupid side sure, but not a coward.  Not brave either, mind you - just an average guy lacking the foresight to realize what he was getting into.

He abandoned his pregnant wife to be a hero then chickened out when it came time to be a real wo/man...

I admit my eyes are getting old, though the reason I remembered the charges on those shields was my first reaction was "well, there's the Scottish royal lion." But I went and read the text for the shield description, and it does say two dogs (though it doesn't actually say mabari) supporting a crown. Interesting.

I wouldn't say I'm a fan, but I understand where his character was coming from.

Now Daveth is a different story, I was devastated when he died. Alistair would have had a run for his money if he was a companion and an LI.
