Correct me if I'm wrong but wasn't Varric actually romantically involved with Bianca? That's more understandable than someone with whom you barely even spoke to and just had an infatuation of.

We don't know the specifics of their relationship, but it does seem to have been both mutual and intimate.
I guess I'm a bit surprised that you'll let that slide despite the time gap.

ShadowReign, I'm curious to know your thoughts on Varric and Bianca given your dislike of Cullen's implied feelings for a female mage Warden.
In Varric's case, it's been over a decade, yet he's named a crossbow after her and (this is just speculation) is romantically unavailable because of his feelings for her. Is that also unhealthy?

 

The Difference here is Varric WAS in a relationship with her.  And from what I understand of their storyline (I am kinda fuzzy on it)  she was left behind so he could get away,  So it is a totally different situation and should not be compared.

Yes, it's unclear how/why Varric and Bianca parted ways. Many fans assumed she was dead, but a forum post from Mary Kirby shook up that assumption.
I think an argument can be made that it's unhealthy to be hung up on someone for years, regardless of how close you were to them. I see it brought up all the time here opposing Cullen's feelings for a female mage Warden. Perhaps avid Varricmancers make the same case in his thread.

See, I think unrequited love (in the vein of chivalric love from the Middle Ages) is terribly romantic, LOL. So we're at an impasse there!
That being said, when I support some "wistfulness", I think some of the opposition infers a lot more into that word than I do.

Do we know that that conversation after the Harrowing was all that there ever was to it? Nothing in their conversation suggested that they'd never spoken before. His awkwardness could just as well have been his reaction to being put into the position of possibly killing her (I've always felt Greagor chose him to bring home exactly that message).

I'd like it if Cullen mentions Amell. Maybe in a you remind me of someone I once knew...not in a creepy you remind me so much of her that I just have to be with you so it's like being with her kind of way, but, in a she was strong and confident too way.

 

As for Varric and Bianca, they were together sure, but 10 years apart, without any contact. Could that even still be considered a thing and would he still be that devoted to her that he would rather remain alone for the rest of his life....there has to be a time when you have to say enough waiting I have to move on.

I think that a lot of things that would be considered creepy and unhealthy in rl are just supposed to be romantic in fiction (mentioning long lost crushes, sneaking into peoples' bedrooms while they're asleep, drinking poison when hearing a false rumor of loved ones death...  ).

I guess what bothers me is that some of the statements imply that there can be no middle ground in his feelings - Cullen is unhealthily obsessed with a female mage warden if he has any feelings about her at all still, as if once he had any romantic feelings at all, he can never again be a friend or just admire her for what she's done.

lol! Well, choosing that could mean either you didn't know him, or you're giving him the brush off. But since you can call him by name, I assume they were letting the player decide.

Well in my head canon they were friends, so unless they say different in game with the origin, I am sticking with it. XD In the meanwhile, I will have him fall harder for my Mage quizzy!

I agree that the crush was one-sided, and I think Cullen wanted it to stay that way. He was going to wait it out, but it seemed to me the crush was still in the early stages.

 

The crush did not define him, but I also headcanon that it could have helped shape his opinion of mages.

 

I don't mind if the crush is mentioned in passing, but i don't want a full conversation about it. :\
